Rural kids, parents angry about Labor Dept. rule banning farm chores

The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.

I guess that means all the

I guess that means all the Amish around the US are going to be arrested / persecuted simply for living the way they have done so for generations.

...

Yet another example of government regulation that will

favor large businesses over small entrepreneurs and family farmers.

ConstitutionHugger's picture

what's next?

they're not allowed to do the dishes or mow the lawn?

this article is not accurate

click on the link provided in this article and you will see that the proposal clearly states that it does NOT apply to farms owned by the family, it is however still dumb to increase the regulations any further. they need to stay out of our business.

It exempts the children

of the owners, but is still aimed squarely at family farms. I don't think the article is misleading. Wait...why would the discussion center around the details of the perverted proposal instead of the obscene over-reach of federal bureaucracy? Which part of the Constitution authorizes this? How did they get so deep into the territory of family farms?

agreed, dont get me wrong i

agreed, dont get me wrong i think it is wrong, i felt it was inaccurate because it seemed to me that it implied all family to include parents. i didnt even consider other family members. i still think it is dumb either way.

Well, that's ..umm..

a relief? What if you go help out on the neighbor's farm? I think the article is close enough to the spirit of the thing for uh .. how do you say .. government work?

variable

now here is something too, what if it is an uncle or grandparent that ownes the farm? they are screwed. either way how many kids were killed or maimed since the 70's that we need to "update" the law? sounds to me like someone needs a good job evaluation. " look at the laws I drafted this year!" its all dumb, like I said they need to stay out of our business

The new regulations, first proposed August 31 by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis,

We need to flood her office with mail and emails and get this stopped.
Now we are not allowed to teach our own children how to work that sounds pretty irresponsible to me. Contact By Mail

What they should be doing is ...

repealing the child labor laws. Kids that refuse to behave in school and learn should be put to work. That way we can eliminate a lot of the discipline problems in school that are taking time away from teachers teaching the kids that want to learn.

These thugs have got to go.

These thugs have got to go. We don't need government to monitor and control our lives. These agencies are completely unnecessary, yet they continue to expand and seek only to justify their existence (their paychecks) by invading and violating the lives of the people under the disguise of "protecting." All they do is create slaves.

The US has been a big

The US has been a big government socialist country growing towards being a police state since at least FDR and the Wickard v Filmore decision 1942. Thanks to Ron Paul a few of the American people are waking up to it.

Killing THREE birds with one stone!

1) Making it more difficult for small family farms to operate (good for Agribusiness and their Washington lobbyists);

2) Eroding traditional rural family traditions and values (good for re-educating youth in collectivist traditions and values); and

3) Setting the ground for a 12-month school year with longer days (good opportunity to decrease influence of the family while increasing influence of the government agenda via health classes, i.e., K-12 sex ed; science classes, i.e., Agenda 21 goals in the guise of environmentalism; the new "radical math" curriculum (google it); and politicized Social Studies and English curriculum).

I don't Know Why You Guys Are Surprised

They've been closing little kids lemonade stands down for how long now albeit for different reasons than this but the overall issue remains the same, less freedom.

Create jobs!

This is what happens when you ask the Government.. well anything.

WHAT!!!!!????

Whose brilliant idea is this NOT?

Seriously, what can be done about this? Who is behind this (besides those ubiquitous PTB?)--

Argh

So stupid, I have to laugh :-(

I'm so angry about this

that I had to comment twice.

Liberty for adults only

You guys are jokers. Just because you were stupid as children, doesn't mean other children are stupid and need to be taught. You pretend you are for liberty, but only for people of certain ages. I thought all men are CREATED equal, not equal at a certain age. You should realize children should have rights too. Stop bullying your kids. Just because you gave birth to them doesn't mean you have the moral right to force them to do what you want. This is the same thought process that leads you people to think it's morally right to lock children up in schools for 8 hours a day for 16 years of their life.
Democratic education

I can take care of my own kid thank you very much

Using terms like "you people" and "stupid" as part of your argument tells me you went through the same public school system.

I can take care of my own kid thank you very much, sounds like you need to relax. Maybe you had a bad childhood, most people have.

Made me be a better Father.

I think most people here are for eliminating the Department of Education.

I want the Government out of my life, house, bedroom, period.

These are moral issues not government issues.

They are deciding the child shall not work.

Stealing the rights of a child wanting to help his family thrive, to pull his or here weight.

You are right, using force or threats is a good example of tyranny.

But the National government has no role to play here.

Free includes debt-free!

I'm not sure that your comments should be taken . . .

seriously enough for a response, but I don't think you understand.

IF this is the case then people under 18 should do nothing but play. No work, no education, nothing. Just play. You believe it is bullying children for them to have work to do. Work leads to self-respect. I miss my grandparents' farm terribly. I was not forced to do anything there, but the things I did do there will stay with me forever.

*We* people. I homeschooled my children, and they had house and yard chores.

The new comprachicos

The comprachicos, or "child-buyers" of 17th Century England, took young children and deliberately mutilated them, so that they could be used as court jesters, montebanks or beggars.

When a parent brings a helpless infant into the world, his ONE responsibility to the child is to give it enough knowledge about the world to survive, and an ethic of self-responsibility to deal with whatever problems he will face in life. Having a child morally obliges a parent to raise the child to become a self-reliant human being -- anything else a child gets from his parents is frosting on the cake.

When I hear sentimental folks waxing lyrical about "Let children be children! Let them play like butterflies and enjoy the carefree childhood that should be the right of all" . . . I hear modern day comprachicos, deliberately deforming the minds of their children, cutting away healthy tissue and rubbing garbage into the wounds.

Forcing children to remain children instead of teaching them to become responsible human beings is beyond monstrous.

I suppose some people respect the Dept. of Labor as being part of the "government," just "enforcing the law" -- the "law" meaning the threats and commands issued by politicians.

I see nothing but a criminal gang, attempting to force parents to turn their own children into mental and moral cripples.

Ron Paul, as usual, is right: the Dept. of Labor needs abolishing. But more than that: the whole notion that "government" can or should control the lives of peaceful folk -- that idea needs abolishing.
