in a two hour debate, Ron

in a two hour debate, Ron gets to speak for 5 minutes. And it's if he'll support Mitt when he loses. How many people below also said this? I figure a couple. haha

The best hope would be...

for Texas GOP Chairman Steve Munisteri to pursue this. He seemed pretty intent on having a debate in Texas in May while Santorah was still in the race. Paul, Santorah and Gingrich had all agreed to debate, and Romney hadn't committed. Munisteri seemed so annoyed by Romney's hesitation that he might be willing to try to set up a Paul-Romney debate just out of spite for Romney. It would be harder for Romney to turn down the debate if pressured by the Texas GOP than if he were pressured by the Paul campaign.

I'm rooting for Texas

Everything is bigger in Texas. Even the debates. I hope the lone star state's GOP gets on top of this. What's wrong with demanding answers from those who would be government officials? Bring it!

Sorry Archie - I didn't see your post before I posted mine.

It appears you originally posted this idea yesterday.

It's a great idea and I was thinkg the same thing when I posted my Memo to the Paul Campaign to challenge Romney now (Publically so a Romney refusal would be well known).

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

No Worries : )

I'm just happy to know that so many of us are on the same page. I only hope the campaign shares our enthusiasm.

Thank you.

Why would Romney accept?

...it couldn't possibly help him, whereas it could hurt him substantially, either by gaffe or by lending his only remaining rival more legitimacy in the eyes of the public.

Get real. If it was so easy to get him to debate, surely we would have ALREADY done this, no?

Bad Form

Bumping your own post in the very thread from which you hijacked your idea.

Maybe he wouldn't accept but MAKE HIM SAY SO PUBLICALLY.

So the world can hear him refuse to debate Ron Paul.

That in iteslf will hurt Romney's cause.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."

Exactly! Make Romney refuse! And then call him a coward

for refusing. For Romney it is a lose-lose no matter what he decides. For RP, win-win.

Call a press conf

The media will think RP is dropping out. They will be falling all over themselves to cover it and issue the challenge for all to see.

freedumb is not free!

I like your idea so much

I almost wish you hadn't mentioned it. Can you just imagine the campaign pulling the old shuck and jive on the MSM? Brilliant. They would be literally foaming at the mouth.

πολλα γαρ πταιομεν απαντες ει τις εν λογω ου πταιει ουτος τελειος ανηρ δυνατος χαλιναγωγησαι και ολον το σωμα

"but make him say so publicly"

...and how do you do that? Lemme illustrate how this would play out.

The Paul campaign would issue a press release. One or two MSM outlets would report on it as if it were a joke. No Romney response or pressure for him to give one. The end.

Or, Paul or surrogate makes the announcement during a TV interview, it's discussed briefly then, and never mentioned again. No Romney response or pressure for him to give one. The end.

I'm not trying to burst your bubble, just being realistic. There are better things for us to focus on. It's a basic rule of politics that you don't attack (or debate) "down." That's the route Romney would take, and there would be no public pressure for him to do otherwise. Certainly not from the MSM.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the idea - it can't hurt anything and it doesn't cost anything. It would make a statement to those of us who hear it, I'm just saying don't expect it to actually produce a debate, or any political points for us.

"Alas! I believe in the virtue of birds. And it only takes a feather for me to die laughing."

I agree Gene

The public needs to hear about this idea. We need a way to get it out. My best idea is facebook, since things spread crazily over there. If people heard of the possibility they would love it, since half of them follow the primary like they follow American Idol. It's all about the public opinion, and right now that is that Romney is the presumptive nominee. A debate in this format would wreck that opinion and probably change a lot of peoples opinion in general towards Romney since Paul would make him look like the buffoon he is. I'll start a facebook page and get back to y'all.

Romney is The Big Guy In The Eyes Of The Public

We have to play to the public, not to Ron Paul supporters.

Regardless of what we believe, the public and the media have concluded that Romney has won this nomination. As I hear it explained, the delegate selection is just a matter of formality.

I've seen this in champion fights. It is always the unknown little guys who want to challenge the unbeatable top dog king of the mountain. I've challenged incumbents in local campaigns (they always refuse).

In the public eye, Ron Paul would seem like a little kid begging for a crumb if he challenged Romney. When Romney refuses, it would make RP seem even weaker in the eyes of the public ("get out of here little kid, you are a nuisance"). The media has already been playing it as if RP is getting in the way of an Obama defeat.

However, a debate CAN work. The ideal would be Romney challenging Ron Paul.

But that is not going to happen because Romney's plan is to act like he has already won. Romney is fighting for delegates in stealth mode - he never talks about it in public.

So there would have to be someone outside of either campaign to arrange a debate. Perhaps the Republican Party of Texas. Or a network.

Or anyone reading this blog could arrange a debate, rent a hall, call the media, find a moderator, and invite the candidates.

I would arrange the debate myself, but I cannot afford to pay for a huge hall with a customized stage, media hookup, security, etc. Nor would Romney ever accept my invitation, especially if he reads this blog.

Strongly disagree

with the little kid analogy, particularly the notion that a public challenge would be perceived as begging. However, I was intrigued by the idea of a third party arranging the debate and making the invitations. I just happen to think that a challenge is not only necessary but appropriate considering the circumstances. Thank you for the input, but I could not disagree more with your general assessment.

debate

Romney needs to know there will be a debate, the question being who other than Ron Paul will be in it.

if Romney opts not to commit to the debate, then debate 3rd parties Libertarians, Constitutionalists, Greens, Reform, etc and press release (if applicable) that Romney chickened out.

On behalf of all Americans

Ron should DEMAND a debate with Romney each and every time he is interviewed!

As you mentioned...

as I mentioned...

some of YOU are saying it would never happen. should you reference my words in the future, please make an attempt to retain at least a little context, it would be much appreciated.

true, the debate may never happen. i would be very surprised myself if it did. the challenge should be issued regardless, whether or not that happens is completely up to the campaign. am i hopeful? not really. the strategy makes far too much sense to ever be employed by the likes of jesse benton. but hey, anything is possible right. stay positive neighbor. : )

Texans should DEMAND it!

It's not nice to dis Texas anyway. How are you going to be commander if you're a cut and run chicken hawk?

Excellent suggestion!

Completely agree that RP should do this! The MSM won't be able to ignore RP.

Very good idea

Paul needs to start attacking Romney and pointing out the difference between the two and to let people know he is still in the race. Romney is Obama's clone for the most part and I hope Paul and his campaign start pointing that out and keep bringing it up.
