Businessweek: Ron Paul's Torchbearers

By Elizabeth Dwoskin | Businessweek
April 26, 2012

Karen Kwiatkowski, a Republican candidate for Congress in Virginia, rarely passes up an opportunity to scold Washington politicians about runaway defense spending, which she says is an egregious waste of taxpayer dollars that does little to make Americans safer. Halfway across the country, Tisha Casida, a Colorado Independent, says she’ll push to end the drug war and legalize marijuana if she’s elected to the House. In Florida, Calen Fretts, a Libertarian seeking to unseat a veteran Republican congressman, promises that if he’s elected he’ll begin working to abolish the U.S. Federal Reserve. “As people increase the size and scope of government,” Fretts says, “there’s got to be a few of us to resist it.”

These candidates have two things in common: All are long shots seeking office for the first time. And all were inspired to run by the same man—Ron Paul.

After 12 terms in the House, Paul, who is 76, says he’ll retire at year’s end. Though he gamely insists he can still defeat Mitt Romney and capture the Republican nomination, his presidential runs have always been about forcing other candidates, and the public, to pay attention to his libertarian arguments for eliminating most taxes, closing federal agencies, bringing U.S. troops home from overseas, legalizing drugs, outlawing official secrecy, dismantling the Fed, returning to the gold standard, and generally getting the government to get out of the way.

Vote Values or not at all.

Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. - Matthew 10:16

Awesome Article!

Loved reading that. Times are a-changin'.

I just wish I knew of a "Ron Paul candidate" running for Senate here in California. It's be nice to have someone here I can fully support, no matter how little know they are.

"Moderation in temper is always a virtue; but moderation in principle is always a vice." -- Thomas Paine

Thomas Massie for US Congress District 4 in Kentucky

Please do not forget to add Mr. Thomas Massie running as a liberty minded, constitutional Republican in Kentucky Fourth Congressional District in Kentucky. His official campaign web site is: http://www.thomasmassie.com/

US Senate Liberty Candidate in Maine

Speaking of "Liberty Candidates" . . . we have several here in Maine. One has been Running for US Senate for over a year now his name is Scott D'Amboise and his website is: www.damboiseforsenate.com.

We also have a RNC National Committeman running as a candidate for Liberty . . . and his name is Mark Willis. There are numerous offices at the State level where Liberty candidates will be running . . two that I know of and there may be others so chime in if you know who they are . . Aaron Libby in York County and Kathleen Caso in Washington County . . . this movement is taking off all around the country. Now let us all focus on those National Delegates and get Ron Paul in the Whitehouse with a Brokered Convention . . . :)

Just Met Karen two weekends ago.

She's a terrific articulator of constitutional restraint on federal and executive power. She spoke at a Restore Liberty Rally in Amherst County, Virginia. I'm so glad to have her running to represent my local congressional district(6th VA). We will work to get her into the republican nomination and on to Congress to help advance the cause of Liberty along with Ron Paul and the Liberty team.

With all due respect, I will no longer be a voting prostitute for Constitution rejecting harlots.

Bumping-keep pushing ahead,

Bumping-keep pushing ahead, the hard work is paying off, We must keep working, and see that liberty-minded people like these are elected-some of us have a little time in between done with our district and waiting for state conventions. These are good focuses to have while we wait, to help these and others our in our local and state offices and see that we reach the goals.

There is something about this

There is something about this article, while I was reading this article posted here: (1) http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-04-26/ron-paul-loyalists-...

Which should be the same article as this one: (2) http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2012-04-25/ron-pauls-to...

But they are different, example:

First article quote:

If forcing his don’t-tread-on-me, minimalist philosophy into the mainstream is the benchmark, Paul can claim victory and return to Texas a happy man. The professional political class may ridicule him as an eccentric kook leading a cantankerous army of potheads who invade chat rooms with ALLCAPS rants about government overreach. (And no doubt there’s something to that—the most worshipful Paul evangelists can be hard to stomach.) But listening to his rivals in the GOP debates demand that the Fed be audited and the Departments of Energy and Education be shuttered, it’s clear that many of Paul’s positions, once considered extreme, are now routine Republican talking points—and that his influence over conservative politics greatly outweighs his low poll rankings and back-of-the-pack primary returns. “I believe our time has come,” says Paul, who quickly tempers this uncharacteristic display of optimism. “It’s still going to be a knock-down dragged-out fight.” END

Second article quote:

If forcing his philosophy into the mainstream is the benchmark, Paul can claim victory. Listening to his rivals in the Republican debates demand that the Fed be audited and the Departments of Energy and Education be shuttered, it’s clear that many of Paul’s positions, once considered extreme, are now Republican talking points. Paul’s influence outweighs his low poll rankings and back-of-the-pack primary returns.

“Our time has come,” says Paul, tempering the display of optimism. “It’s still going to be a knock-down, dragged-out fight.” END

...on this article and "feel great." Any mainstream insinuation that we are nothing but a small army of potheads gets blasted...every time.
Kudos to all those who commented and, of course, Karen who is always right on.

You're right about those

You're right about those comments. The tide is turning! If an article like that had been in busniessweek four years ago all the comments would have been scornful. This is very good news.

Yes, the comments are a rare pleasure to read

in a mainstream publication.

That's right...Liberty

That's right...Liberty Candidates have never arisen from any other politician running for office. What Ron Paul's message has wrought is not a campaign but an entire movement!
