Near Sweep for Ron Paul in Massachusetts

We just swept MA district 7, getting the 3 delegates and 3 alternates.

And I heard the same about districts 2, 3 and 5.

We might just sweep this whole state -- and then some.

UPDATE: regarding the sticker issue, just wanted to add that they were handing those out inside the building at district 7 as well. Barring that, the rest of the meeting ran smoothly and without controversy.

STICKERS

STICKERS WERE USED IN DISTRICT 1 AS WELL. SHOULD WE CHALLENGE????

I would say yes if you can!

Thank you so much for all your hard work, SO proud of you all in Massachusetts!

District 3

Voted in District 3 caucus this morning. Total sweep and the Romney delegates were pissed.

The "WTH just happened?"

The "WTH just happened?" looks on their faces was priceless.

I was there too

I would describe the Romney people as shocked and appalled.

I was there as well. Made my

Today I didn't make it on to the state but

at least one Paul supporter did...

Wow!

This is just like Ron Paul banging his wife...extremely offensive

Hope this D-bag

Congrats on your big day

Good day for Ron Paul supporters in MA. Sucks for me, but oh well. At least the delegates are bound by law in Massachusetts to give a positive vote for Romney (and not just NOT vote for someone else).

Total count out of the 27 delegates up for grabs today looks to be either 16 or 17 Paul supporters. The 11 at large delegates picked by the committee will certainly be Romney people. The 3 unbound delegates will also surely be Romney people. So in total, the Massachusetts delegation will cast 41 votes for Romney on the first ballot. But on later ballots (if it comes to that), it will be 24 or 25 Romney and 16 or 17 Paul.

Thank you, Shazad

It is worth noting that, even if our Liberty delegates are bound to vote for Gov. Romney for president, they will be free to vote as they wish for vice president, on the Platform, etc. Who knows, maybe the vice presidential nominee will be Rand Paul (even if Romney doesn't want that), and the Platform will condemn Romneycare.

A Constitutional, Christian conservative who voted for Ron and stands with Rand

it will probably be all or nothing...

It will probably be an all or nothing thing for you guys on the Prez/Vice Prez issues. The Santorum and Gingrich delegates will also be unbound for the Vice President pick. They'll almost surely go with the guy that Romney has chosen. Most Vice Presidential nomination votes end up being quite lopsided. I don't see a scenario where Paul delegates would be able to get their Vice Prez choice if Romney is nominated. But if Paul were to win, then they'd get to choose Vice President most likely.

As far as the platform, I do think Paul delegates could have a say. Does anyone know which vote is taken first (Presidential nominee or party platform?) I'd assume President but could be wrong.

Shazad: Romney = Bush?

My question on this topic is here:

Thank you.

Wrong.

"So in total, the Massachusetts delegation will cast 41 votes for Romney on the first ballot."

Nope. Delegates can abstain and no matter who likes it, believes it, denies it, sticks their tongue out at it... Delegates can abstain.

So, re-work the math and get back to us.

read Massachusetts State Law

http://www.malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleVII...

Section 70I. If there is a roll call vote for president at the national convention of a political party, all delegates and alternate delegates whose selection is subject by party rule to the approval of a presidential candidate shall vote on the first such roll call for that presidential candidate unless released by such candidate.

The Massachusetts State GOP rules emphasize this law as well:

"Each nominee for election as a pledged Congressional District delegate or alternate delegate shall express a commitment to a qualifying Presidential candidate and agree to be bound to vote for that candidate on the first such roll-call unless released by such candidate, as required by law. c. 53 § 70(I)"
...
"If there is a roll call vote for President at the Convention, all delegates and alternate delegates whose selection is made subject by the Plan to qualifying Presidential Primary Candidates defined by Section 4.2 of the Plan, shall vote on the first such roll call for that presidential candidate unless released by such candidate. (G.L. c.53, §70I)"

Maybe some delegates will abstain from some states. But it's not allowed in Massachusetts, as is plainly obvious from these rules and laws. Even your own delegate who was a coordinator for one of the districts knows this to be the case.

Duh....no bound delegate for Romney will vote Paul 1st round but

nobody is saying that...what they are saying and read the law, they do not force you to vote, the law only says that "if you do vote" it must be for the candidate you are bound for. If you think the law says you must vote, I don't see it and it is too vague and you can be assured the Paul campaign will challenge its vagueness in court.

There is no law that would force you to vote for a candidate, for example if you suddenly find out he is John Edwards lets say and broke the law by using campaign donations and screwing around on his dying wife and even though he won the state primary you must still vote for him. Nope you can abstain.

So your telling me Mass law would MAKE you vote for Romney if he was found out to be guilty of child porn ---hell no that is a self destructing vote, you would abstain.

It is not vague at all

The Paul legal team will have a heck of a time trying to convince the key people of your interpretation.

Paul's legal team has NO SAY

Paul's legal team has NO SAY in this whatsoever. Delegates are independent autonomous individuals. They decide for themselves.

Totally Pointless

State Laws and the rules of the RNC are very different!

Actually..

The rules of the RNC say that the state laws for delegates are the Rules for the RNC unless specifically stated in the RNC rules....IE - State party rules for delegates are the rules at the RNC.

That is the bad news...

The good news? You can abstain from voting in the first round, even if your state says you have to vote for someone AND even if they make you sign an affidavit (like they do in Kansas and other states) saying you promise to vote for someone under penalty.

Just always remember this - no law/rule/affidavit from a state other than Florida (the state the RNC takes place in) is "legal/binding" in the state of Florida! Unless the RNC plans to physically force you to vote for who they want - you can "vote" your conscience!

"If you put a gun to my head and said vote Romney/Gingrich/Santorum...I would say pull the trigger!"

You and your negativity
