Why Many Young People Love Ron Paul And Why Many Older People Despise Him

I have watched Ron Paul for a very long time and one trend I see over and over is the split that emerges between people of roughly under the age of 40 and those who are older when his name is mentioned. I have no polling data to back this up, but young people seem to like Ron Paul and older people seem not to.

This is by no means uniform. I know plenty of older folks who love the good doctor and plenty of young people who do not like him, but generally the above statement holds I think. Why is this?

Fundamentally I believe it comes down to faith in the markets and whether or not one is playing for the future, or if one is clinging to the past.

Harsh? Yes. This matter is too important to allow deeply erroneous concepts to take root.

Older people tend to think...

...Hannity and O'Reilly are smart, trustworthy and 'good boys'.

Younger people tend to know they are tools.

'Nuff said.

I am 54 years old and am

I am 54 years old and am largely contemptuous of the mass media, particularly Hannity and O'Reilly. I want the Bill of Rights back, our troops home, and realize that if there is any hope of keeping social security sound we have to get the government budget in balance. I never smoked pot, never smoked tobacco, and don't drink alcohol, but I want to stop the government from wasting my money putting pot smokers or body builders doing 'roids in jail. I also see that while the War on Terror buried the Bill of Rights it was the War on Drugs that killed it.

Dr. Paul: Champion of Senior Citizens

I'm 64 and think many seniors are influenced by the belief that America is always the good guy. We fought to save the world from Hitler, we struggled in Vietnam to stop atheistic communism from spreading despite the protests of spoiled anti-war, peace-nik, free-love, long-haired, pot-smoking hippies, and during the Reagan years Ollie North got secret aid from arms sales to Iran to Nicaraguan Contras to fight the socialist Sandinistas, etc. Ron Paul's "anti-war" (bad term: we should say he is for Constitutional war), "legalize marijuana and heroin" (he needs to emphasize that ending the Federal War on Drugs leaves state drug regulations in tact, breaks the profitability of drug cartels, and allows compassionate state medical marijuana laws, while keeping the feds from regulating alternative medicine and foods like raw milk), and "isolationism" (his opponents tar him with this term to give the impression to those who fought Germany and Japan in WW II that Ron Paul would be a Neville Chamberlain that would not have stopped the Nazis in time) all remind seniors of the "unpatriotic hippies" of a few decades past.

And, of course there is the wide acceptance of the notion that Israel must be supported at all costs because of the prevalence in most Christian churches of, I believe, the mistaken Biblical interpretation that God has a special plan for the modern state of Israel yet to be fulfilled in the future. It is true that Ron Paul's positions are not anti-Israel regardless, but evangelical pastors, and thus their sheep, are ingrained with this notion that Christians must support God's people in the modern state of Israel-- especially since nuclear Iran with its desire to destroy Israel and the U.S. is on the horizon seeking to impose sharia law on the world. Many do not realize that the modern state of Israel is pro-abortion, mostly secular and atheistic, full of prostitution, and oppressive to the Arabs in the country--pretty much the antithesis of conservative Christian social values. Yet, tragically, evangelical Christians due primary to this supposedly biblical belief about Israel, are probably the most united and influential block of voters (and mainly in the Republican party), supporting our pre-emptive wars and liberty-killing anti-terrorism laws.

There are lots of interlocking pieces to this world view that have to be taken apart almost simultaneously. Usually they can only be weakened little by little, and we all tend to gravitate towards information that supports views we already hold. Listening to other views and really seeking the truth is difficult, time-consuming, and sometimes frightening.

But Dr. Paul has continued to speak the truth as he sees it, and the pillars of the establishment are tottering. An idea whose time has come cannot be stopped. We can only continue on in hopes that it won't be long before that last pillar falls.

To that end, here is a little piece I wrote on Dr. Ron Paul: Champion of the Senior Citizen!

This article is very

This article is very thoughtful, and brings up some good points. I think it should emphasize more, that we are really talking about rate of conversion. The younger folks are seeing the reality at a quicker rate than the older generations. Its because the younger generation uses knowledge tools differently. Its all happening, just not as fast as many of us would like it too.

The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. - Heinlein

"They can't say it on TV, if it isn't true"

Do you realize that there are people out there who believe that?

That was circulated as a recurring rumor all during the early stages of television, to make people believe the TV.
It got absorbed by people, and they never got over it.

I agree. to hear it said, it sounds crazy.

If you said " does everything on tv have to be true?" Anyone would pride themselves on their ability to reason and say " of course not" - BUT it is so ingrained in our psyche that our inner-child or whatever has a REALLY hard time letting it go. I see it even here at the DP. Even the most skeptic people will allude to some truth based merely on the fact that it was broadcast. So many people here are obsessed with any news coverage ; "see! its true!I saw it on an official, bonafide tv station" etc. So many of us SAY the tv lies, but then subconsciously fail to act unless the media validates the " truthfulness" of a story. I think the older you get, the deeper the influence or hold tv has on you. The older you are the harder it is to go against the natural subconscious inclination to believe that if its on the tv, it bears the stamp of truth. People say it all the time; " the revolution wont be televised" - but deep inside, they are waiting for it to be televised before they get off their a$$ and believe in and act on the reality of what we are in the middle of.

Evey comment here is correct

It is only about exposure, not age.

Older Ron Paul Supporters Just As Enthusiastic!

Just put this comment somewhere else on DP - but it seems more appropriate here.

Some may not have understood the subliminal negative dismissiveness of the media hyping Ron Paul's "hyperactive, hotheaded mostly young support". Personally I was quite sure the older people also supported the Paul message - except older people were less likely to hear it being less glued to the internet - and the younger people's non-mass media "grapevines". Once older people understand what Ron Paul is really saying - and not just the garbage the media are putting in their heads - they become just as enthusiastic as any "young" supporter! And more and more older people are now getting to hear the Ron Paul message for themselves. BTW - I'm 60. Go Ron Paul!!! :-) :-)

Groups?

Being 50 myself

I can tell you its the tv. They have been conditioned to believe the "news" is reality to the point you can put proof otherwise right in front of them, and they literally cannot comprehend the disparity. Growing up I always thought it strange that my father would sit in the evenings watching news show after news show and they were almost the same a little difference in national and local but mostly the same stories. But this is what they were told would make them informed. But every time we show them something which doesn't fit with how they know the world to be ( because the "news" said so) it does disrupt them a bit eventually they will start waking up.

One simple example: the bailouts.

How many 401ks did the bailouts save, even if only temporarily? Who has more money in those kinds of retirement accounts, the elderly or the young?

I really doubt the older

I really doubt the older crowd is looking that deep into things and then making a decision on such a narrow interest. More likely it has to do with where people get their info, TV vs. Internet.

the MSM news divide

It's really is a indication on where they get their news & information from

People over 40 mostly still get News from Old Media (Major Network TV & print Papers)

People under 40 mostly get their news from the Internet (Blogs, Alt Media, YouTube, etc..)

Not saying that everyone is this way but it is true generally. I have always said that people are mostly good but can only make decisions based on the info they are given. So bad info (from Old Media) = bad decisions & better, more honest, complete info makes for better decisions.

I think that when you invest

I think that when you invest your whole ego into a certain way of thinking and certain set of beliefs, it is difficult to admit to yourself that maybe you were wrong the whole time.? The media being complicit with pushing their agenda is the reason for the brainwash. It's amazing- the power of group think.

I have faith that more people are snapping out of it. It may just take some longer than others.

I agree

Breaking away from old ways of thinking requires a paradigm shift. People will fight tooth and nail to defend their old, comfortable, paradigm because it's just too scary to think it is possibly wrong. When paradigms shift in individuals or nations, the earth moves. What was conventional wisdom yesterday becomes ridiculous tomorrow. It can all seem to happen quickly...like the fall of the Berlin Wall...when in fact the preparations for the shift have been going on all along.

These things are hard to predict, but I think we are on the verge of a huge life-altering paradigm shift in this country. It will be excruciatingly painful for many who are heavily invested in the current system, and there will be an epic fight to maintain the old/bring in the new. I am pessimistic about the chances of it staying peaceful...I think TPTB will not let the old ways go without some bloodletting...but I am hopeful that what comes out of the other side will be the discrediting of the corrupt system we currently have and the growth of a more liberty minded system.

MSM and government handouts

They have had much more exposure to MSM lies and propaganda. Many senior citizens are also receiving their social security checks from the government. The younger generations typically use the internet more and do not rely on MSM for their news. Younger generations also realize that they will not receive social security that they pay into every paycheck.

Once the government is unable to keep their promise and the seniors are not getting their social security, the generation as a whole will begin to question the establish and will have an awakening.

But let's not wait for that to happen. Let's continue to spread liberty and freedom from our central planners in Washington.

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety

Your post is very divisive and

does nothing to help a 40+ individual understand what Dr. Ron Paul is about. 40+ individuals would be even more entrenched in their set beliefs if they viewed this as a guest to the DP site. Maybe you should utilize your energy to attempt to reach the vast numbers of 40+ who stopped involving themselves in politics (for whatever reason) and are finally looking to see if there's any way the current totalitarian take-over can be stopped. Your guess is as good as mine what would work for this, but it should be positive and not divisive.
Thanks for reading some thoughts from a 40+.

Q.E.D.

Older people are the heaviest watchers of television news.

The television news is controlled by the establishment.

Older people are controlled by the establishment.

Q.E.D.

A lot of people don't like to have to think....

They see themselves as Republicans or Democrats, and they really aren't sure what that entails but they know that there are organizations called the Republican Party and the Democrat party, and these respective parties will tell them who to vote for.

The party does the thinking so the voter doesn't have to.

Its clear that neither party is supporting Ron Paul much, so to these people the Good Doctor is kind of an unknown quantity and to be avoided.

More intelligent voters and those willing to open their eyes support Doctor Paul. But the Party Sheeple described may never support him unless their party does.

IMHO older people don't want to admit or still

don't believe they could of fallen for the great deceptions all these years. I believe the pride factor is what most of the older crowd cling to. I always get the comment 'how could all these people be involved in the corruption'? They can't understand how power and greed can corrupt most people. Many who are wealthy, have been so acclimated to the system, they fail to see they contribute to much of the corruption. They have been sold so long on things like the need for foreign bases to protect America, the 'war on drugs' keeps everybody from being 'dope heads', and prostitution should be against the law, because women would be making lude acts on every corner. Changing their beliefs is very difficult, but if you continue to challenge their 'learned' fiction, with empirical facts, they will come around.

My wife and I are both over age 50

I was over 50 when I first heard about Ron Paul in 2007. Dr. Paul immediately opened my eyes. I have been a fervent supporter ever since. By the way, my 83 year old mother who voted for Obama last time is now a huge Ron Paul supporter. She has attended several of the rallies around Texas and maxed out in her giving to the campaign. Obama was a huge disappointment for her. Anyway, don't discount the over 50 crowd. Those of us in our age bracket know all too well how power and greed can corrupt. With a little gentle persuasion people our age can easily be converted.

A lot of it is what you

A lot of it is what you said-they don't want to admit that they fell for all the deceptions all these years.

Had I voted in 2008

I would've voted for the current liar-in-chief. I admit this openly.... fooled, I was. Is is just me or is there something sinister about THAT Obama lilt in his speech? I was 49 years old then. I've aged a lifetime since then......

Thanx,

Jason

You can't get clean in a dirty bathtub.

Revolutions are the stuff of the young...

And the young at heart. Jacques Lusseyran, blind, sixteen year old leader of the youth underground in Nazi occupied Paris said in his autobiography that young people are far more likely to join a resistance movement as they have less or lose then older, more established people do, especially those with responsibilities such as children and homes and mortgages. But the young at heart, and there are lots of us (I'm 64), are here too. I thank God for the enthusiam and energy of the young people and the wisdom and level-headedness of the elders, and vice versa. Let us go on together, arm-in-arm, to victory!
