Marquette County Michigan Delegate ConventionSubmitted by Joe Blaze on Fri, 05/04/2012 - 15:53
Here is my county convention story (Marquette County Michigan):
Due to our collective ignorance, we (the RP People) entered the room en masse and a little late. The reaction of the regular party members was an audible gasp as we just doubled the size of the committee. (They must have known who we were.) After getting seated, the speaker said there is a sheet going around; if you want to be a delegate, sign it. When he got the sheet back he verified the precinct of each person who signed it. He then said that there were only 12 slots and 14 sign ups and asked for volunteers to be alternatives, two people volunteered. After that, he asked if someone wanted to motion to elevate all nominees to permanent precinct delegate status, Dooren Takalo, a Republican icon in our area, made the motion and after being seconded, it passed unanimously. That was it.
Ron Paul's name was never mentioned during the meeting (neither was Romney's), no one wore any candidate regalia at all, not even one button. The regular party members never questioned us, they were elated to have us. I believe this is the first time they had a full slate of delegates.
When I sensed that the speaker was about to end the meeting I spoke up and made a motion to adjourn, they loved it; a new member was already making motions (to adjourn at that, the highest level motion.)
Our county will send twelve delegates and two alternates to the next level (Congressional District). I know that at least nine of the twelve delegates are RP supporters, as are the two alternates. Either way, we will all be on the same bus for about 8 hours and by the time we get there all of us will be Ron Paul delegates.
