More Americans support pot legalization than gay marriage...so why is gay marriage #1 topic now?

Almost every major news organization is salivating over Joe Biden's recent comments on gay marriage. It is the lead story on almost every news show and every newspaper. But if you look at the polling, more Americans support legalizing marijuana than they support gay marriage. Additionally, 80 percent of Americans support legalizing medical marijuana!!! So why does the media continue to ignore this issue? How come Obama has only received one question on the issue and he's been in office almost four years now?

From gallup.com 10/17/2011

"...Record-High 50% of Americans Favor Legalizing Marijuana Use
Liberals and those 18 to 29 most in favor; Americans 65 and older most opposed..."

From Politco 5/8/2012:

Poll: Sharp split over gay marriage

"...Meanwhile, 48 percent told pollsters they oppose same-sex marriage.

Along party lines, 65 percent of Democrats and 57 percent of independents support recognizing gay marriages by law, while just 22 percent of Republicans agree. Nearly three-fourths of Republicans, or 74 percent, say gay marriage should not be legal, along with 34 percent of Democrats and 40 percent of independents..."

From the Washington Post 5/4/2010

"...This is perplexing because medical marijuana is far more popular than Obama is. A Washington Post-ABC News poll from January 2010 found that 81 percent of Americans supported legalizing medical marijuana. A CBS News poll from October found that 77 percent of Americans support allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana for serious medical conditions. By contrast, the president’s approval rating last October hovered around 42 percent — and is currently about 47 percent..."

Only because it's the one issue that makes

Democrats look more enlightened than mainstream Republicans. On abortion there's way less acceptance, plus it is a very complicated issue. On pot they are all far less enlightened than Ron Paul, so that is out.

Well, gay marriage is the #1 topic right now...

because it represents another sad vestige of systemic bigotry. Homosexuals have a right to be married and get the full benefits of a married couple. There's really no argument against it.

It's especially at the forefront today because North Carolina is about to set themselves back decades with an anti-gay marriage amendment.

I don't play, I commission the league.

I agree with you that

I agree with you that homosexuals should have the right to get married, but from a media standpoint, this shows the disconnect the media has with the rest of America. I have gay friends and I also know people who have lost their homes to asset forfiture and I know others who have painfully died from cancer. If 80 percent of the country feels medical marijuana should be legal and the president is cracking down on it, the media should be asking the President and Vice-President several questions about this issue. The media should be asking these questions, not Jimmy Kimmel. (SIDENOTE: They tried to push that stupid gay amendment here in Minnesota until the top Republican in the House got caught having an affair with one of her interns. It embarrased the entire "family values" party and the Republicans popularity in this state plummeted.)

News Flash: your government doesn't care what you think!

~70% of Americans want out of Afghanistan. ~64% want to audit the fed. Do you think they have any intention of letting either of those two things happen?

Public opinion polls are meaningless in a country that no longer has a representative republic.

Tu ne cede malis sed contra audentior ito

the answer is easy

Because too many jobs

Because too many jobs depend on fighting the "drug war".

Not only that:

It would open the door to growing hemp which would inevitably kill the oil industry taking away their avenue of the endless theft for the past hundred years.
