Liberty University Students Protest Choice Of Romney As Commencement Speaker

Liberty University students and alumni are accusing the Christian school of violating its own teachings by asking Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints whose adherents are called Mormons, to deliver its 2012 commencement address.

By Friday morning, more than 700 comments had been posted on the school’s Facebook page about the Thursday announcement – a majority of them decidedly against the Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr.’s invitation, citing that the school had taught them Mormonism isn’t part of the Christian faith.

“I can’t support Romney and I am happy I decided not to walk (in the commencement) this year,” wrote student Josh Bergmann. “Liberty University should have gotten a Christian to speak not someone who practices a cult. Shame on you Liberty University.”

Janet Loeffler, a 53-year-old freshman at Liberty, expressed her anger at the decision when contacted by CNN. She also sent a copy of the page of the freshman textbook “The Popular Encyclopedia of Apologetics” which includes the passage, “Mormon doctrine stands in stark contrast to Jewish and Christian monotheism, which teaches that there is only one true God and that every other ‘God’ is a false god.

Hello

Not always the maverick he portrays himself as being, Ron Paul is openly allied with GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney, and could serve Romney in a number of ways.

Claiming he might not support his ally Romney if he got the nomination, Paul has floated the idea of running as an independent. Should he do that, it is possible that he might pull in some of the young morons in particular, who have been hoodwinked by his Third Position views.

Fulfilling the role of a right-wing Ralph Nader, he could be decisive – for Romney.

Will Paul’s young potheads be allowed to inhale some weed, just before they inhale some Zyklon B?

Romney blows

Go away douche bag you will not marginalize Dr Paul or us(his base) with your neocon repuklacan BS!!!

In Liberty Dan
Only Ron Paul 2012

Zyklon B.

That was absolutely uncalled for.

Ja vol Herr kommandant.

Ja vol Herr kommandant.

Dr. Paul only serves the

Dr. Paul only serves the constitution, never served a bank or special interests and have never sold his soul. We love him because he always tells the truth, no matter if we like it or not.

Romney will never be president, he is unelectable because no one likes a flip-flopper that didn't have a stand in his entire life. Romney will tell you whatever you want to hear but you will never hear Romney tell the truth.

Is it only in Michigan the trees are the "right hight" or is it everywhere? That was the Flip, we are waiting for the Flop.

Yet, who serves Dr. Paul?

Endorse Liberty is the biggest super PAC supporting Ron Paul. Founded in late December and headquartered in Utah, this group of politcal novices, backed by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel, has already spent $3.5 million pushing its online ads into early primary states where they have been viewed 12 million times. Peter Thiel is an ultra-right winger with a background suggestive of possible Underground Reich connections.

“It is safe to say Endorse Liberty is a new force on the scene,” said Michael Beckel, who tracks super PAC spending for the Center for Public Integrity.

Super political action committees have been around for only two years, created in the aftermath of a Supreme Court ruling that allowed corporations, unions and individuals to give as much money as they want to groups acting independently of the candidates.

First of all, we are not

First of all, we are not Romney supporters so we have the habit of not repeating what others tell us to say, we only say what we find to be true after a lot of research. My advice to you is to get your facts straight next time before arguing with any RP supporter.

Arguing Super-PACS have nothing to do with the candidates, we are talking about Dr. Paul and Romney, so let's get down to who is serving whom.

What is documented here http://www.opensecrets.org/pres12/contrib.php?cycle=2012&id=... are (using "serve" which is a term you used):

US Army (Serves Dr. Paul)
US Air Force (Serves Dr. Paul)
US Navy (Serves Dr. Paul)
US Dept of Defense (Serves Dr. Paul)
US Government (Serves Dr. Paul)
US Marine Corps (Serves Dr. Paul)

And now it's my turn to show who serves Romney here http://www.opensecrets.org/pres12/contrib.php?cycle=2012&id=... are:

Goldman Sachs
JPMorgan Chase & Co
Bank of America
Morgan Stanley
Credit Suisse Group
Citigroup Inc

Well, wait a minute, those are all banks so they serve nobody, that is odd, right? No, they want a servant and Romney appears to have agreed to serve them, they serve nobody but they found a servant that will bail them out someday when they choose to rob the world again.

You see, the difference is Dr. Paul is served by the most honorable men out there, but Romney is just a servant for the biggest thieves on the face of the earth.

Carter Glass~Central Role in Creating Federal Reserve

The Carter Glass Mansion is on the property of Liberty University.

Fed-Up

Romney throws his money around so much no one knows...

...what is right or wrong.

SUBS anyone? -Paul Ryan

Salman Rushdie was there first choice

but was unavailable...so they got Mitt

A cult ?

Hey - I'm no fan of Mitt Romney - but calling Mormonism a CULT while supporting the "leader" of the chrisitans who lives in a CITY OF GOLD ?

Brainwashed kids are hard to listen to.

LIBERTY university students should be offended by the decidely ANTI-liberty stances of Romney, like his support of the NDAA bill as it is written and the ANTI-patriot Act.

Are these kids retarded?

The whole point of our country and the 1st amendment

should make religion a non-issue. I would support a mormon or a muslim that wanted freedom over a christian like santorum or bauchman any day.

But we have been programmed to not look at politics in terms of liberty vs tyranny. The MSM and political establishment force the acceptance of tyranny and we are programmed to support the leader that represents the tyranny that is the most palatable to our tastes.

What is with all of the Mormons speaking at LU commencements?

Glenn Beck in 2010, and now Romney in 2012?

I don't think they should call themselves a christian university, and they should definitely remove 'Liberty' until the entire corrupt staff reads 'Liberty Defined'.

At least some of the students get it.

Apparently Falwell Jr. spends

Apparently Falwell Jr. spends more time on foxnews than in the Bible.

Given...

... these two are about as 'Mormon' as I am a rocket scientist, but still... Why them?

I am really stunned when seeing how big the crowds are at college campuses around the country for Ron Paul, that Ron Paul has not yet been invited to speak at a commencement (that I know of).

Of course, it WOULD turn in to a Ron Paul rally, but why would anyone that has ever been to a 'Boring' college graduation, turn down a Ron Paul rally for their graduation?

Isn't the Real Reason He Was Invited was for political

reasons and he would be guaranteed a crowd because he isn't able to draw people to his rally's. The university should have asked a christian vs a mormon, especially to a commencement event.

A.Hansen

With over 20,000 in attendance, Romney STILL

only had 200 people come to see him. :-)

Apparently the campaign held off on the "Home Made" signs though today. That was respectful I guess. :-)

It's not the first time

It's not the first time Liberty University has done something like this.

Which makes it a

pattern.

i wonder how many students decided not to attend commencement

In protest? It would have been a good opportunity for the Paul students to protest as a group. Isn't it ironic for McMittens to be speaking at LIBERTY UNIVERSITY?

As a Christian, I do not

As a Christian, I do not believe it is right to attack Mormons. You can educate, but leave them alone if you do not agree with them. Attacking people who have done nothing to you based on personal beliefs goes against the liberty philosophy. Just walk away.

Using his Mormonism as a way to attack him isn't the way to go. How about bringing up his ties to the Federal Reserve and the military industrial complex. His Mormonism is wrong in the eyes of Christians, but his actions are deplorable and disgusting.

Pointing out the lack of discernment

at Liberty University is not the same thing as attacking Mormons.

that is not the point.

that is not the point. Liberty University is supposed to be a Christian University. By having a mormon speak at the University goes against EVERYTHING we believe. Yes you can get along with a mormon. I have a very close friend I have known since the 7th grade and we get along great. BUT you do not invite a cultist to speak at that university.

Great Friend

Hey - what great friends you two must be. Let me read back what you wrote to illustrate my point:

"I have a friend who is mormon, but you do not invite a cultist to speak to christians."

So you're good buddy is a cultist in your eyes ?

Is the irony of a christian making this statement smacking anyone else in the face??

YOU'RE PART OF A CULT!
Christianity is a tool to control the masses - why is there a christmas tree? Why did jesus live as a meager traveler while the current "leader" lives in a Golden City?

Holy shit.
Where's George Carlin when you need him.

I believe in God - but damn, I found my own route without contradictions. And I believe Jesus was a Master too -- but there have been many masters througout history.

One day the Vatican will be a museum, instead of a secretive golden city.
That will be a great day.
Hopefully I'll get to see it.

You realize that LU is a

You realize that LU is a Protestant university, right?

I agree, but he isn't even

I agree, but he isn't even living up to his Mormon beliefs so why attack him exclusively on his Mormonism. He most likely loves these attacks: At this point Romney is exploiting the LDS as a way to project a speck of moralism when in fact he is a blood thirsty tyrant of the Federal Reserve and the military industrial complex. That also goes against Christianity.

In this case religion is the whole point,

the gorilla on the coffee table so to speak. When one can't notice the strangeness of a Christian university inviting a Mormon to speak at graduation, it's like not being allowed to notice the gorilla sprawled across the coffee table books slinging cookie crumbs in a room of Southern women sipping tea.

you're missing the point

It's not so much about attacking Mormonism in this case, as it is that Liberty Univ. is a Christian school. Why on earth would they invite someone of another faith to give the commencement address? Is there no discernment left anymore? I'm pretty sure, though I could be wrong, that Brigham Young Univ. always has Mormons giving their commencement address.
