Are Traffic Lights Necessary? I Don't Think So!

Man Ron Paul has me thinking about crazy things Lmao. The more I think of it its against the law to stop somebody who hasn't injured somebody, right?

If we had a real free market

(that wasn't fixed in favor of a privileged few), we wouldn't have 80% of the cars on the road (or 80% of the roads either).

Who wouldn't trade their irritating hour long, gas-guzzling commute (which is average now) for a peaceful, automated 10 minute nap opportunity?

(ok, cheating a bit... they do use some traffic lights, but admire the merging coordination!)

How about those lines they paint in the road to keep drivers on opposite sides of the street?
How about those annoying 'headlights' of the oncoming cars?
Those 'pesky' crosswalks?

How about 'ROADS', themselves?

WHY should the 'gubmint' prevent ME from driving my car up your A.S, huh?

Living in China

I see motorcycles and bicycles going the wrong way down the street and the crazy mayhem that is Chinese driving in cities with only guidelines and major intersections with only stop signs. Its like the wild west, but I have yet to see an accident. People slow down to make sure they have time to adjust for any new cars merging and there's scooters with mom, dad, and baby sitting on them as they drive.

The American philosophy of having signs everywhere and rules just serves to make people more asleep to what is right in front of them. With no signs, as in China, the people are 100% aware and engaged in driving. I never see anybody texting while driving here.

How many thousands of people die in car accidents in the USA each year?

Almost every accident I've ever came upon was caused by

one driver going through an intersection because they had a green light. Pow! They get t-boned.

I NEVER go through an intersection without looking both ways. Don't want to end up like this guy:

This is the grave of Mike O'Day
Who died maintaining his right of way.
He was right, dead right, as he sped along,
But he's just as dead as if he'd been wrong.

Ever see how the Chinese drive? Their traffic laws, lights, crosswalks...they're basically suggestions. Then again, parts of China are still getting used to widespread automobile use.

Traffic in the major cities can get *extremely* messy, though.

A signature used to be here!

Nope seatbelts either!

That's just disgusting

Why would you post that and not warn people of its EXTREME graphic nature? And also, the argument that people wouldn't have figured out that wearing a seat belt is a good idea is just ridiculous. Just because the government forces people to follow a good idea by threats of fines and incarceration, doesn't mean that people would not advance to that idea without government. Ron Paul just answered this question on Leno at around 4:25:

I'm a serial entrepreneur and liberty activist from Texas!

Off topic but

for whatever reason I was reminded of a time several years ago when it was not uncommon for everyone to routinely text and drive. I was reading a text when I came to a 4 way stop in a residental area. When I stopped at the sign no one was in front of me but I was the last car to the 4 way intersection so I knew I was last in line to go next. I started replying to the text I had gotten. When I was done, I looked up expecting by then it would be my turn to go. I busted out laughing when I noticed that each driver in the other 3 cars were all looking down texting away. I tapped my horn because I was ready to proceed and everyone kind of looked up/around and smiled...all wondering who (at this point) actually had the right of way.

That's funny man!

That is funny

did you win the dual?

Yeah we should have them

otherwise were going to have aggressive drivers trying to ram through, crash and than beat the tar our of each other. I am a libertarian and i think we should have them for safety. the 1 car by 1 car takes allot longer to get through than a light i have timed it myself.

Rotarys and new jersey no left turn main roads

Rotarys are efficient they just replaced a five way intersection in my town with one and it makes a lot of difference there! In New Jersey on main roads to turn left you exit right go under the road.It requires making overpasses but is a pretty good design for safety I would think!

ah the brilliance of cars

trying to exit in front of cars trying to enter.
yeah, i love jersey.

I am involved in this industry

And I can tell you, speed limits are never correct as the engineers that work for the government never do what is necessary nor use equipment that provides accurate information. They tend to always go for whats easiest for their simpleton workers instead of what is best for the tax paying citizens. There are lobbyists involved in analyzers and devices that provide crappy information but are easier for indigents and illiterates to use. This isn't every engineer...there are good people in local governments...but state level DOT's are beyond incompetent due to their laziness and fear of losing their jobs. It makes me beyond angry that even in my tiny market that the ineptness of government costs tax payers billions. The more local the government, the better the workers. The bigger the bureacracy, the worse service the people get. I could go on for hours on how far behind we are in comparison to the rest of the world on providing quality roads, traffic patteerns, speed limits, road safety, signals, etc. Incompetence causes so much unnecessary death on the road way due to laziness.

We don't know

The thing about the Free Market is that we don't know what will become the optimal traffic safety devices. We can speculate but until we let the Market work, we will never know.

Your right... So what would

Your right... So what would be your solution?

juan maldonado

Fact is, we don't know.

Public Roads suffer the tragedy of the commons. Who takes responsibility for everyone's property.

Governments always put themselves forward and politicians find profit in people's gullibility.

The first traffic signals were hand operated. Could the traffic in an area hire people to manually speed traffic flow for differing conditions? Such a thing couldn't be a government mandate as it is not in the general welfare, but affects the welfare of only a few.

Free includes debt-free!
