Judge Napolitano: First Patriot To Shoot Down A Government Spy Drone Will Be A Hero

Judge Andrew Napolitano has warned Congress not to act “like potted plants” regarding the increased use of unmanned surveillance drones without warrants over US skies by military, government, and law enforcement agencies.

Echoing the recent comments of his Fox News colleague Charles Krauthammer, Napolitano also said that “The first American patriot that shoots down one of these drones that comes too close to his children in his backyard will be an American hero.”

The federal government is rolling out new rules on the use of the unmanned drones this week, with the Federal Aviation Administration announcing procedures will “streamline” the process through which government agencies, including local law enforcement, receive licenses to operate the aircraft.

Observation:

Fear based posts get tons of votes - yet positive - constructive posts with excellent ideas (not just talking about mine) rarely seem to get any kind of traction.

Is it safe to consider we are ruled by fear?

You don't attack the drones with guns...

you bring it down with software, it's not hard, just like every chinese soldier, russian hacker, we can take it down too

I got news for you, that

I got news for you, that stuff hobbyists buy from Tower Hobbies is considered drones too.

Aren't police using drones protected as a states' rights issue?

A distinction with a difference

A bank installing cameras to monitor teller windows is a world of difference from a city installing cameras on the street corner to monitor citizens. And a government agency using drones for surveillance is qualitatively different than a hobbyist flying a toy plane.

What about private citizens

What about private citizens installing cameras on their houses and reporting every little transgression to the police?

You have no right to privacy in public, you should know this.

I just had this thought.

The airwaves were originally a public domain--Hence the FCC agency was established to protect the airwaves in the the interest of the public.

Then several years ago our government gave a expiration date for people watching TV using traditional broadcast waves over the air, and (sponsored at tax payers' expense) to provide free cable boxes to anyone who needed one.

Besides the concern the public airways are now "decommissioned" by the government, providing a big windfall to cable companies as the only medium for TV, it makes me wonder if the real reason this was done was because the drones control frequency is the same or similar to that as the former TV broadcast frequencies. Or perhaps TV broadcast frequencies would cause interference with the Drones somehow.

Any electrical engineers out there who can tell me if this is so?

Mystery object nearly causes mid-air collision

DENVER - The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a mystery in the sky. A mysterious object flying over Denver nearly caused a mid-air collision Monday evening, 9Wants to Know has learned.

As far as investigators know, the mystery object did not show up on radar Monday.

Investigators believe this object, whatever it is, could pose a serious safety hazard to planes.

Radio transmissions from LiveATC.net confirm a nervous-sounding pilot reported a strange object at 5:17 p.m. Monday.

The pilot is heard telling air traffic control: "A remote controlled aircraft, or what? Something just went by the other way ... About 20 to 30 seconds ago. It was like a large remote-controlled aircraft.

Already saw one in my neighborhood...

I live in Gilbert, Arizona. There were 2 drones flying together near the intersections of McQueen and Guadalupe about 3 weeks ago. They seemed to be circling the neighborhoods and then headed south (I believe there is an Air Force base that direction toward Tucson).

I was in shock when I saw them and it and then I was outraged.

shooting it down seems hard

because you dont know where its going to be at any given time unless by sheer chance you happen to see one.

but the airfield they are at should be pretty predictable.

and I am curious how they handle their fuel when its mixed with water.

It wasn't Judge Napolitano.

It wasn't Judge Napolitano. It was Charles Krauthammer, who made that comment. Which is one of the few times I have ever agreed with him on anything. But nobody is going to shoot down one of those drones. I've read where those things are at 59,000 feet. Nobody with a regular rifle will be able to hit one of those things except at take off and landing. But I do agree with the good Judge that these things are unconstitutional.

Judge said it

From the article:

Echoing the recent comments of his Fox News colleague Charles Krauthammer, Napolitano also said that “The first American patriot that shoots down one of these drones that comes too close to his children in his backyard will be an American hero.”

Irresponsible

When the American patriot shoots down the first drone, is Judge Napalitano going to serve the sentence for the poor bastard when the Feds arrest him for terrorism? Totally irresponsible for the Judge to say something like this if he actually said it. Krauthammer I can understand, he is a neo-con, Ron Paul hating, dangerous crazyman.

Thanks

Drone crash in Texas

The Examiner is reporting that a prototype drone crashed into a Texas Montgomery County police vehicle, causing little damage. No doubt this event will touch off a firestorm of concern over the safety of domestic unmanned aerial vehicles. Much like the Google driverless car crash, it would appear that a human being was in control of the drone when it went down. But unlike the Google car, which was reportedly in manual mode at the time of the accident, the drone should have landed safely and autonomously when it lost contact with the operator. Instead, it plowed into a (thankfully armored) SWAT vehicle

This article is from March but I wasn't aware of it.

You shoot it down, it crashes

You shoot it down, it crashes in a house or kindergarden, you are the terrorist...

Thats the damn problem with flying things. You cant bring them down controlled, except you hack the software.

I saw American military on Swedish tv...

the reporter was with some american military people who was using drones and they used it on people who drove cars (I think this was in Texas).
The reporter asked the man: "Do they know that you are spying on them" while they both looked at the guy driving the car on the monitor, the american said: "the don´t know we are looking".
Then the reporter said again: "But is it ok to spy like this, is it legal", and the guy says: "the don´t know it so it is ok".

I have to find it, I know it was either on SVT or TV4 (Swedish channels). I was like 0_0 when I saw it.

Anybody from sweden seen this also? What show was it from?

Good for you! Now let's see how long you can keep it

Being an aerospace engineer in the missile industry...

this sounds like a worthy challenge.

One of my colleagues and I used to joke about making little missile interceptors to shoot down RC airplanes at the local RC field.

Oops that may have gotten me put on some kind of list...
