Dr. Ron Paul is currently the U.S. Representative for Texas's 14th congressional district. He has also been a three-time candidate for President of the United States; as a Libertarian in 1988 and as a Republican in 2008 and 2012.

In this video from a 1989 meeting of the Libertarian Party State Chairs, Dr. Paul shares experiences from his campaign in 1988. He talks about various challenges the campaign faced and expresses optimism for the future of libertarian ideas in the United States.

++ NOTE: Koch Bros' CATO finally capitulates: Ron Paul IS important to the libertarian movement!

For those who may not be familiar, the reason why I say that is because until this election cycle, Dr. Paul has NEVER been invited to speak at CATO, if you can believe that. Yes, Dr. Paul, the most famous libertarian/voluntaryist alive, the man whom single-handedly inspired a whole new generation of people WORLDWIDE, provided more 'liberty gateway drug' for them than anyone alive or passed-on, has never spoke at the self-professed libertarian institution most famous in DC.

In fact I believe Rand spoke at CATO before Ron did (for those who know for certain, please correct me).

Granted it's a bit too inside baseball, but like all political movements, we've had our share of sub-faction disputes. And the most notable is the Mises vs. Koch Brothers' CATO/Reason: it's all due to the co-founder of CATO, the anarcho-capitalist extraordinaire Murray N. Rothbard vs. Koch Bros. split

There's a reason why CATO/Reason worships statist corporatist pro-FED. Reserve Chicago School's Milton Friedman, but they never, rarely if ever, mention Mises, or Rothbard, or anyone else associated with Lew Rockwell, including Dr. Ronald Ernest Paul.

Peter Schiff so far has always been sort of a 'bridge' between the two, cross-attending both institute's conferences.

So when CATO's Libertarianism.org puts up a classic video of Dr. Paul AT their own official YouTube page, the Koch boys are definitely riding the winds of change.

Certainly, it's a minor petty point for those just learning about libertarianism, but for the O.G.'s, some wounds haven't healed. Just a reference, for those who maybe curious, 'tis all.

Speaking of old and bloody

Speaking of old and bloody good speeches. Anyone seen the 1964 Reagan endorsement of Barry Goldwater speech? All you would need to do is switch some of the numbers and it sounds eerily like Dr. Paul today. Liberty has been around for some time. Too bad Reagan was such a defense (military) guy. Rambo Raygun my pops used to call him. I much prefer the peace of Paul's message. If there is to be one world I would fight for my life that it would be consensus over conquest. Make no mistake, conquest is what we are all fighting against. We have all heard of the dumbing down of America for at least a decade. Paul has allowed us all to join up in the fight against the tyranny of stupid. Rally Paulites! Enjoy the battles we fight! There is no greater cause than freedom and the responsibilities that lie within. For the establishment...something wreaks!...

A revolution can be neither made nor stopped. The only thing that can be done is for one of several of its children to give it a direction by dint of victories - Napoleon Bonaparte

In the video Ron Paul made reference of being interviewed

by the New York Times while running on the libertarian ticket in 1988. Here's the article:

You will note that Rand Paul was actively involved his father's campaign then. He was 25.

Thanks for the VIDEO. What a treat to see Dr. Paul when he

formed his message and how he delivered asimple package of truths about campaigning. Oh, oh, oh is is so good to have him now right at the prime where he and the campaign has brought these truths to millions of Americans.

Now it is up to each individual Paul supporter to get our President elected. Our time is short but we are not out. Thanks so much again for a trip to 24 years earlier...it shows more than ever before that the USA needs this good doctor. God bless Ron Paul and all thosw who love him and his ways.

I don't trust the Kochtopus any farther than I can throw it

On that note, its hilarious to see the Crane-anites and the Kochs at each others throats in this legal battle over The CATO Institute: The pseudo-libertarian court jester of the establishment.

Thanks for this

And there are

still people, especially on this website that doubt this man. Dr. Ron Paul is in charge, Jesse Benton does what Paul wants. You doubt Jesse, you are doubting Dr. Ron Paul. Trust in the Paul, and trust in the Wead to boot.

OK, I'll buy that. But in the

OK, I'll definitely buy that. But in the same vein, what's your opinion on what Rand Paul is up to?

Immoral funding of Military Industrial Complex by Federal Reserve and US taxation system must stop!!!! End illegal/unconstitutional wars! Preserve US currency!

Rand Paul

is one of us. He just has to play the game, just like us. We have not come close to taking over the GOP yet, so we, and yes Rand, have to play politics. Dr. Ron Paul is who he is, he doesn't, nor ever will, play the game, WE HAVE TO, in order to win. Then we set the agenda. Neocons and partisan republicans are dirty, lying, thieving, sinners, all of us, including Rand Paul, have to beat them at there own game. Rand is positioning himself for a LEADERSHIP role, WE need this.

I completely agree

I completely agree

This is 1988. I remember 1976 when I had a physics

Professor Dittman who spoke of Dr. Paul and the interlocking dictatorships of multinational corporations and the corrupt banksters that were directed by the global elite. He shared information that I had never been exposed as he unveiled the military industrial complex and the pervasive tentacles they had in every aspect of our lives. That was over 35 years ago and Ron has continued the effort to change all that can be improved in our world, proving that our entire existence could be entirely different and better with a few fundamental changes in how we conduct our daily lives.

Predictions in due Time...

"Let it not be said that no one cared, that no one objected once it's realized that our liberties and wealth are in jeopardy." - Dr. Ronald Ernest Paul

He made a great point there

He made a great point there about the fear of monopolies. If they have too much of the market it means they have too much market share and they're gouging. If they charge too little, it means they're so strong they're running out the competition. If they charge the same, they're working in collusion!

National Treasure

Ron Paul has proven time and time again that his conviction runs through his veins. If you slice and cut ron pauls conviction liberty, freedom and adhering constitution will drip from it. I personally never like politicians but knowing Ron Paul has changed my view that indeed goodness, loyalty, honesty and integrity can still permeates in one politicians character, Ron Paul's message is getting contagious and there will be a lot of new politicians, young blood that will follow his footsteps. One's you know and discover liberty and make a good sense of it. You will never look back. There will be a lot of push back from the status quo and it's an uphill climb but once the majority via the youths and eventually with all the masses get it. It will be hard to stop. It took decades to change all of our morals and beliefs to align with the status quo bit by bit and Ron Paul has taken the steps for decades to reach out and try to educate and for us to understand his ideas and spread the message of LIFE, LIBERTY and THE PERSUIT OF HAPPINESS. Educate yourself it's all in your hands. Ron Paul President !

"When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. When the government fears the people, there is liberty."

I think that that is his

I think that that is his greatet contribution, in that just being who he is has inspired a new generation out of apathy and into political action! Amazing! His legacy and ideas will continue far into the future.

Now can you say that about any other living politician?

If my need to be RIGHT is greater than my desire for TRUTH, then I will not recognize it when it arrives ~ Libertybelle

My gawd

This man was way too ahead of his time

I LOVE this man!

Watch his eyes. HONEST EYES! Don't see that in politicians or the rats in msm!

If Only We Had Had The Net

Back then! He talks about getting the message out to more people on cable. Too bad cable was compromised by the powers that lie! The Ron Paul in this video was both innocent and super wise!!!!! I love it that he was saying the same stuff then but without the internet to tell it on it took 24 more years for it to get through! Did you hear how he talked about privacy? BOY was it less complicated at the point he was coming from compared to what has happened since!

That is so funny when near

That is so funny when near the beginning he said he'll never run again...I guess time and seeing what desparate straights the country is in will motivate one...

If my need to be RIGHT is greater than my desire for TRUTH, then I will not recognize it when it arrives ~ Libertybelle

it was also wild to hear him say that he was so excited that a WHOLE 150 people would show up to hear him talk! HA HA HA HA If only he could have seen into the future!!!!!!!!!

Remember New Hampshire?

When he said "I didn't know you were out there!" Almost made me cry.

Preserving the republic is this man's first priority and it utterly disgusts me that so many Americans have no understanding of what's been lost over the decades.

Perhaps he could.

He's the only political figure I know of who understands the power of exponential growth.

Thanks AnC, that was a fun hour.

I'll take my Liberty, it's not yours to give.

Thanks for posting!

Ron Paul was and is a genius

2 Chron 7:13-14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Looking to build coalitions, even then.

When do we start?

Carol Paul Must Be Happy

Carol Paul must be so happy to see the size of the crowds, now, paying off for all the insults, pain, and hard work he has invested. Although, did you notice? Those crazy Libertarians did not interrupt his speech with rude shouting. ;)

We would be so much better off if all politics were argued as up - down (libertarian - authoritarian), rather than left - right (liberal - conservative). Even authoritarians have reason to fear a statist government.

What do you think? http://consequeries.com/

Its amazing to see the beginning of the movement...

Amazing seeing RP talk about the media bias. Thank goodness for the internet because the movement would not of exploded the way it has as of late.

The optimism for the movement spreading is very motivating and boy he was right

Provides fantastic

perspective. Thanks.

What a charming guy....

but yet he doesn't sugar coat or schmooze his way into your heart. Who knew honesty can be so attractive.

In my opinion, the SPLIT was NOT over the Friedman - Mises

issue at all. Milton Friedman was not the issue, as far as I recall. It was NOT their "worship" of Friedman or the Feds.

I was in the party at the time. To me, the SPLIT was over Political Correctness which was sweeping the Nation in the 1980's. The liberal left was riding that wave.

The Reason/CATO crowds joined the PC crowds and distanced themselves from the Ron Paul Newsletter/Lew Rockwell/Mises Crowds. They saw themselves as the "legitimate" libertarians, and because we were openly NOT PC, we were "paleolibertarians". That is, we said in effect, Liberty means the freedom to be a bigot, as long as that bigot does not interfere with anyone's individual rights. It meant holding fast to the objection to one part of the '64 civil rights act that violates private property rights -- hence, PC anti-smoking rules and regs have entered through that door.

For the Reason/Cato libertarian, you had to be PC. You did not have the liberty to a sexist, a bigot, a racist, "suffer from" homophobia - in PC style, you had to LIKE EVERYONE EQUALLY, preferences where not allowed and stereotypes are to be whitewashed as if they have no basis in fact. (hey, Mexicans don't drink tequila more than anyone else! Men ask for directions as often as women do, the black people I know absolutely hate fried chicken, and the sight of two men kissing doesn't creep me out in the least) You could not say openly, "Gay creep me out and I don't want to be around them, but I support their rights to their own life, liberty and property." If you did say something like that, "called a spade a spade", then you were in the "paleolibertarian" crowd. If Rodney King had the ass whooping coming, then don't call yourself Don Rickles and Lisa Lampanelli could NOT "be" a libertarian to the "reason-cato" people no matter how much they consistently respected other people's individual rights to be free. But they were welcome with wide open arms by Ron Paul and Lew Rockwell.

I could be all wet on this, but having grown in my 20's during this time and watched it all unfold, this was the split, I think.

Yeah, and I really think the

Yeah, and I really think the PC issue is what is holding back some of the younger people coming in from the left, who might like Ron for other reasons, but couldn't quite get over the newsletter thing, or who have strong reactions to Rand when he is sarcastic, or comes off a little too socially conservative. There is a whole generation now that has had this PC stuff ingrained our wholes lives, myself included. It is a kind of cynicism I think, and just this general paranoia that people might have bad intentions with their words or want to take your rights away. It can be a difficult gut reaction to unlearn. But again, PC mentality feeds into the whole philosophy that people are essentially greedy and cannot be trusted, and therefore a strong central state is needed to keep things fair and distribute income...which is obviously not the direction of liberty.
