How to Recognize and Neutralize Trolls on the Daily Paul

ATTENTION THIS POST IS A WORK IN PROGRESS

Please comment so we can make this post COMPREHENSIVE and not just a product of my LIMITED WORLD VIEW.

I've been posting on internet forums like this for about 7 years.

98% of these posts were on scientific pages that were trying to ask and answer questions relating to alternative fuels, particularly biodiesel.

Along the way I've met some trolls.

I was very surprised to find trolls on a science forum rather than just on the hollywood pages.

I don't like trolls.

This thread will be added to continuously, sporadically, and intermittently, etc-etceterally.

163 WAYS TO AVOID TROLLS:

1. Start out by voting down on your own posting if you make one.
2. Change your vote to plus 1 vote which will give your topic a 2-point switch.
3. Watch for when the same question is asked in 2 or 3 postings in 2 or 3 different formats, example 'Should Paul, Romney, Will Paul - Romney, What if Paul... Romney...
-. Vote these threads DOWN when you see them crop up together.
-. Say 'Thank you for being a troll' in your comment title along with a link to a video of the 'thank you for being a friend' song from that one show in the 80's.

-Beware the knowledgable troll that can talk the Ron Paul talk then throw in a zinger - example - I love RP, I know RP says this, Surely that must mean that RP would endorse THIS...
-
-
-Watch for immediate comments that support the premise of the Troll Post. Analyze the comment thoroughly, wait 5 minutes, vote how you feel, then click on respond to comment if necessary.
-
-Beware the post-writer or comment-maker who talks the good talk for a while then throws in a false premise at the end. Example: I agree that ____ and that ____ so therefore (completely opposite conclusion)

-Love the fact that you are driving trolls crazy when you point this stuff out.
-
-Learn to recognize the 'skunks' who like to pollute conversations with little distractions that just waste your time.
-
-
-Learn what 'false flag attack' means.
-
-Cut and paste the troll's comment in your response as they are certain to remove their comment through the edit feature and it will be gone forever unless you save it by cut-and-pasting.
-
-
-Be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN before calling 'troll' on anyone

Don't get caught up in the heat of the moment.

They see me trollin' they hatin'....

I think a good practice

I think a good practice is to just move on to the next post or comment if you think someone is "trolling". I myself have just recently adopted this method and it has saved me tons of time.

What is the definition of a troll?

And what is wrong with them?

I went the Daily Kos and tried enter into discussions there ... "Psychology of Conservatives and Liberals" was interesting and I tried to put my two cents in but was called a troll. but was called a troll right away and ignored and mean attacks to me and the subject of what I was saying ignored. http://www.dailykos.com/blog/Psychology%20of%20Conservatives...

So it seems to me, this troll calling thing is really about not arguing with those who you disagree with, right?? If that is true then what you are saying is that at the daily paul must agree or always make agreeable comments (drink our own kool-aid) just like those over at the daily kos who drink their own kool-aid.

Seriously, I really do not understand the definition of a troll to you.

The bigger question

What the hell were you doing on the Daily Kos lol

Making the libertarian argument, or my thoughts on the matter.

And making the libertarian argument which can handle both those on the left and the right.

So much attention wasted

on 'trolls' on this site.

Who cares? Just ignore someone you disagree with. Posts like this make me not want to come to Daily Paul anymore.

A troll's effectiveness

A troll's effectiveness depends on how well they understand identity cues from the target group. How well they can blend in or get a rise out of the members depends on how well they know the particular group dynamics and psychology. Profile them. What kind of kind of person would want to troll in the first place and why--there are always subtle cues. Their tactics often depend upon group think, so for example, you might see lots of words like "we", "us", or other typical collective patterns of thought and reasoning... or if they are aware of this fact, they might go out of their way trying too hard to differentiate themselves somehow.

Learn the different types of trolls. There's a difference between common trolls who just do it for lulz (mostly harmless), and those who do it because they have a real motive or grievance with the group, and those who are paid. For example, they might have canned responses and often reuse the same lines and phrases over and over.

Once you understand some of the common tactics and different types of trolls, make an effort not to inadvertently behave like one yourself. This probably the most important thing. I realized I was doing certain things, without intending to.... Well meaning or new people can behave in ways that seem trollish, or accidentally create bait.

Also read Saul Alinsky's book. A lot of people have read this book over the years, and the tactics he puts forth are very widespread and common, both in the media and by professional trolls in online communities.

Skunky Trolls

You call them trolls - I call them Skunks. For the very good reason that they deliberately kick up a nasty smell. They do this by swearing, being aggressively argumentative, insulting other commenters and inciting anger. The cleverer ones try to incite negativity. By also being seen as a "supporter" they leave a nasty smell across forums that has the effect of depressing other supporters and potential supporters who then (understandably) get disheartened and leave in droves. They become unaturally passionate, angry or jeering. That's how you can recognise the skunks.

Skunks work best when they create an artificial "stink" between themselves - which leaves out having to deal with well-meaning commenters who might get ensnared. But these people are skunks - pure and simple. They use the skunk technique to scare everybody off.

The answer as far as I can see is 1). Never get caught in the detail of their posts. 2). Let them get on with it. 3). Forum mods to remove them from the forums if possible.

Skunks - a very appropriate term

Haven't heard that one but I know what you mean.

Without being to graphic...

it's like a bad smell you smell once accidentally then smell again on purpose just to confirm to your mind this new extreme it may have to deal with in the future...

very easy to be trapped in. Beware...

Pandacentricism will be our downfall.

You did not specify how to identify trolls.

Trolls are anyone who:
1) criticizes RP's campaign leaders. (Benton, Tate, Wead)
2) criticizes Rand for anything or any endorsement he has made
3) supports the liberty movement with a Plan B candidate
4) fails to support a compromise such as RP as a VP, keynote speaker or platform writer.
5) supports true liberty candidates regardless of party affiliation over "Tea Party" Republican candidates

I disagree 100%

I often think that the Campaign fails to understand the power in giving us informational feedback. They did get the power of a moneybomb and watching it rise, what they failed to do was GROW that feedback loop system with the grassroots. It would have been dynamic.

I often think we are fools for NOT demanding the campaign to itemize its spending for us.

I often think that the campaign is not WISE for not allowing targeted donations for specific things, rather than a general campaign fund.

I think criticism of the Ron Paul Campaign is a good thing. Now is it constructive criticism, well that is for them to decide.

I am not happy with Rand Paul and I support Judge Andrew Napolitano 2016, is he a B candidate?

I am not for RP as a VP, etc.

So call me a troll.

I agree with you.

I was pointing out that since I've violated all five of my troll definitions, I have been labelled as a troll several times on DP. Judge Napoliatano is an "A Candidate" for 2016 assuming he runs. I was referencing a former governor as the "B candidate" for 2012.

Thank you for 5 more examples but no

"Trolls are anyone who:
1) criticizes RP's campaign leaders. (Benton, Tate, Wead)
2) criticizes Rand for anything or any endorsement he has made
3) supports the liberty movement with a Plan B candidate
4) fails to support a compromise such as RP as a VP, keynote speaker or platform writer.
5) supports true liberty candidates regardless of party affiliation over "Tea Party" Republican candidates"

I did not nor would not say any of these were example of trolling.

PLEASE NOTICE I CUT AND PASTED THE COMMENT - THIS IS ANOTHER WAY TO FIGHT TROLLS

Pandacentricism will be our downfall.

Eh sounds like too much

work for me, but it looks like you got it under control. Perhaps this energy could be focused towards a more productive means, much like getting local, state, and federal office holders to follow the constitution. Weighing the options....constitution....trolls...constitution....trolls? Come on now, surly we can use tolerance and let the 'trolls' fizzle out. Be careful of using the word troll though, lately folks around here have been using the word 'troll' more liberally than many democrats use the word 'racist,' it’s kind of annoying.

...what's the point of 1&2?

?

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

Basically they're just small things in the environment that

the trolls can control.

Since trolls always have multiple accounts they will use each to produce 'up-votes', and these will each produce a 2-point swing when used tactically.

Try it yourself - go to a post you've upvoted, vote it down, then vote it up again.

Pandacentricism will be our downfall.

Joη's picture

isn't that just my own vote going from negative to positive?

or are you implying during the duration of self-down-voting, "a troll" comes in and knows how you voted, then votes oppositely you because by definition that is what trolls will always do? Except there's no reason to think they know how you voted, and your action is irrespective of theirs?

or are you choosing to be dishonest by manipulating other "non trolls" who feel compelled to upvote something sane that's -1 by a presumed troll?

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

Would never endorse dishonesty

But you need to learn to recognize it when it is used against you.

Pandacentricism will be our downfall.

Joη's picture

then given OP, we must have different definitions of "endorse"

.

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

Better answer (edit)

Maybe some people would down-vote their own post or comment, be it a good one, so that others would see the downvote and instantly vote up without thinking about it too much. The 'troll/skunk' then might later vote it up which gives a 2-point swing, also putting the post into contention for the 'top recent topics' listing and more exposure.

Or maybe the Milwaukee's Best is kicking in...

Pandacentricism will be our downfall.
