Breaking: Mitt Romney Pushed The Individual Mandate, Emails Show!

Mitt Romney has distanced himself from the health care reform bill he signed as governor of Massachusetts amid criticism that the law bears more than a passing resemblance to Obamacare, which he's repeatedly pledged to repeal if elected in November.

But a series of emails obtained by the Wall Street Journal reveals Romney was actively engaged in negotiating the specifics of the 2006 Massachusetts bill and that he and his top aides championed a provision identical to one in President Barack Obama's law requiring individuals to have or buy health insurance.

The so-called individual mandate is at the heart of most conservative criticism of Obama's health care law, with many Republicans calling the provision unconstitutional. But in 2006, emails obtained by the Journal under a public records request show, Romney and his top aides pressed for an individual mandate even when Massachusetts Democrats weren't yet embracing such a proposal.

Uh

I don't understand. Why do people need this kind of 'proof'? How was his plan supposed to work WITHOUT an individual mandate?

Tax Farming?

This is really interesting. It seems similar to the old custom of tax farming in Eastern Europe where the authority to collect money by force, and even conscript men by kidnapping, could be bought from the rulers by private operators. These tax farmers became very wealthy but the general society became increasingly poor.
Forced insurance purchase is so un-American; what happened to no taxation without representation? Why should anyone work and produce when extortion and corruption is elevated?

I'm really glad that someone

I'm really glad that someone mentioned the ponzi scheme. I either heard it or the radio or read about it online somewhere several weeks ago and have not heard a thing about it since. I was beginning to think that I had dreamt it. But the part about his supporting the individual mandate is (supposedly) even easier to prove. I can't remember where I read this, but Romney supposedly wrote an op-ed in the USA Today newspaper where he came out in support of the individual mandate in a federal version of his state program. And this op-ed was written to President Obama! If this is true, and I don't know if it is, this will (and should) destroy any chance mittens would have ever had against the President. But what I'm wondering is, was Mittens ever meant to defeat Obama? Seriously, was he ever meant to win or was/is he just another sacrificial lamb like Dole and McCan't. Maybe the powers that be have already decided this and the GOP and the DNC are just following the script that has already been written and given to them. Who knows? But surely to God, they (the GOP) must realize what a wimp candidate Mittens really is and the fact that he couldn't possibly beat President Obama. If Mitt is the nominee, President Obama will surely be elected for a 2nd term.

These quotes are honestly

These quotes are honestly kind of weak... I'm sure all the good stuff is on the 17 hard drives that he quietly bought and destroyed. Why hasn't anyone asked him about that? Sounds like something Obama would do.

This quote says it all

"Either the individual pays or the taxpayers pay. A free ride on government is not libertarian. An uninsured libertarian might counter that he could refuse the free care, but under law, that is impossible—and inhumane."

Not done

This very topic came up repeatedly in the debates. Sometimes it felt like the entire debate was of everyone attacking Romney for Romneycare, and Romney saying "This is a state right! Massachusetts did what was right for Massachusetts. Obama is constitutionally wrong to mandate healthcare from a federal level."

His lawyers saved him again, interpreting the Constitution enough for him to defend himself against this obvious attack.

Maybe you'll disagree re Romney

but I see a distinction between a STATE'S choosing to have a health care program for itself (as residents apparently voted for, overwhelmingly, in Massachusetts) vs. a NATIONAL mandate. I see it as a matter of states' rights, which I'm all for. And the people in a state do have a choice, a choice to move - not an option with a national plan.

Now whether the Massachusetts HC plan would be viable without federal funds is another issue. More importantly, despite what Romney says, I watched a video clip of his being interviewed on the subject, i.e., what he would do as president re Obamacare. He clearly said he would get rid of what was bad and save the good. It didn't sound to me like he supported its total repeal. And just giving states an "opt out" isn't good enough when everyone knows that it would come with strings attached, just like the 55 m.p.h. speed limit.

The Tenth Amendment is Not the Only Issue

Perhaps you should also consider the first few Amendments of the Bill of Rights...

The idea that a free market "leader" would steal from the public to support the pharmaceutical monopoly indicates the type of thinking that he entertains.

There is a lot of evidence that drugs are not the only path to health. For that reason, many people do not want to support the pharmaceutical monopoly. Why should that limited service be provided at gunpoint? In addition, this is an insurance problem, not a need to completely take control of health.

Hey, no argument from me re drugs vis a vis health!

I'm a proponent of eating organic foods and shunning prescription Rx, also AMA doctors in general except for (God bless them) emergency medicine. On another thread I recommended a source for so-called "alternative" health & healing. http://www.amazon.com/Prescription-Nutritional-Healing-Pract...

I've given consideration to what you've said. But as to something being at gunpoint, I don't see what the issue is if people w/in a community or state WANT this for themselves, in effect pooling funds to provide for all. It wasn't as if Romneycare was by executive order. It's my understanding it was passed by virtually all of the state's representatives and senators. It's a misnomer to claim that all Americans have access to healthcare via hospitals. If you walk in without coverage you are GOUGED, even for basic tests you must have there. If you ended up in the hospital for something serious, you could end up in debt for many years. The costs are outrageous. I give STATES credit for trying to come up with solutions that, in the long (if not also short) run are in everyone's best interest.

The Focus Must Be on The REAL Problem

That is why this is an insurance problem, not a health problem.

To address the insurance problem, there are many private pools available, such as private insurance companies, churches, and charities.

To tell me that I must support a medical system that refuses to support non-pharmacy approaches, just because a lot of people got together and forced me into it, is not a sign of a free market. I cannot afford to support the people who have refused to make the sacrifices needed to take care of their own health. Instead, I choose to to use my limited resources to maintain the health of my own family. When there is a little extra money available, I prefer to choose my own charity to administer it.

Also, leaving the State or the country is not always a viable option. There is never a good reason to make the violation of natural rights a systemic rule.

I agree this is an insurance problem, not health problem

You make an excellent point about the inclusion of non-pharmacy approaches where insurance coverge is concerned. But as to moving, it's quite different having to renounce one's citizenship as an American vs. moving across the border from Mass. to New Hampshire; and I don't know what natural right you're talking about. But back to what you said, yes, the focus must be on the REAL problem. I think you might not be aware of the difficulty for an INDIVIDUAL to find affordable insurance. The big issue is the unavailability of "catastrophic," what I believe could once be purchased thru Blue Cross Blue Shield. Even if you budget for gen'l health expenses, accidents happen; there are genetic anomalies; and there are environmental factors over which we have no control. It's not just a matter of being responsible. Also, I don't know of pools that are options for the millions who are self-employed, work freelance, or have p-t jobs (esp. women w/children). You're wrong if you don't think there is a genuine problem in this country. I don't believe it's within the purview of the federal gov't. But I maintain that if the vast majority in a given state want coverage for all their residents, good for them. As many have said, society is judged by how it treats its weakest members. If states did so, incl. coverage for "alternative" health practitioners, they'd DRAW people & businesses.

Exactly! I can't believe

Exactly! I can't believe people are defending his use of the mandate! It's wrong to force people into anything. Mitt Romney is no conservative and he needs to be exposed now. Im just so ashamed of our media and how Dr.Paul is always treated. It just isn't fair man! But people like Herman Cain and Rick Santorum are praised to no end for there ideas... It's shocking really!

Gotta be SOMETHING!!

It seems as if the Romney team has it all but locked up. MSM is never going to report the TRUE facts like delegate counts, public opinion polls etc. Here we have MSM pushing a story that Romney is just like Obama, but yet who do the sheeple keeps voting for like mindless dummies? Romney. What we need is something TRUELY scandalous in Romney's background to come out, i.e a criminal action of some sort, selling arms to N.Korea, diddling maid! There has got to be something this guy has done in his past that can knock him off this pedestal the GOP has set him on. No way can he be that perfect coming from the prominent background he has. All the rich kids are usually pricks and the worst behaved, they just have money to cover it up. There has to be something... #Frustrated!!! O_o

Like what? He bullied a gay

Like what? He bullied a gay student by shaving him! He created Obama care! He protested and told people they were cowards for not fighting the war, then fled to France to escape it, all the flip flops and this is not enough? What!? Then what is? We need to take him down ourselves, because no one is going to help us!

Romney should have his arse Locked Up

Here's The EVENTs in 2001 - why Mitt Romney & Bain should have the joy of their very own FBI raid and miranda rights read to them;

Bain Capital Frauds & Hand Picked US Attorney

Justice Delayed is Justice DENIED!

this

is good, but its something that is not easily translated to the masses. We need a HuffPo headline, "Romney Fathered Illegal's Child", or "Romney had Male Lover in Prep School". Something that is a catcher of the eye to the Sheeple.

I'd rather use ...

... how he's treating the Republican race. The way he lets underhanded deeds work in his favor in getting the nomination should be revealing enough to how he'd run things as president.

I find it highly suspicious they waited til today when 5 states

are going to the polls to come out with this. Why didn't they release this yesterday or earlier? Don't tell me they didn't have the info yesterday or last Friday. Corporate media was told to hold off on this till after California and New Jersey went to the polls.

Warning: Individual mandate and individual debt slavery

I'm from Europe and I would like briefly share what individual mandate inflicted in our country.
The long story short: The indivial mandate was passed in first half of 1990's. It said everybody must pay health insurance and later also pension/social insurance - pay even in case the individual has under minimal or no income or even in the case the individual is not in the country at all and lives abroad. The sanction for not paying this in fact direct taxes is from the very beginning the penalization of usurial ~36% annually and this liability accumulates exponentially in time. Later also criminal charges for not paying were enacted (Yes, you can - go to jail for not paying this debt here now, but it doesn't mean it will pay the debt, good to note at the time it is still rarely used, because a poor prison inmate unable to pay debts at large costs the state money).
It was also enacted the employer must always pay this insurances for employee.
What happened next? Many employeurs didn't pay, especially in the wake of the local financial crisis of 1997-2000, and went subsequently bankrupt, firms disappearing, sometimes not paying insurance for their employees for whole years.
But somebody must pay it to the insurance companies, it is mandatory, so usually, having no money for effective legal defense their poor employees become liable instead, including liability to pay the penalization.
Our country is small - like a small state in US, yet there are now at least tens of thousands of people who never got enough money to pay this debts including penalization, which is now, 19 years after the individual mandate was enacted always much higher (100s-1000s! %) than the original debt on insurance. And it still rises with them exponentially to unpayable amounts of money, often literally millions without any prospect of repaying or amnesty.
And this poor people are now slaves to the system - whenever they find an employment, the insurance companies find out using the government databases, come and take most of their salary and leave them live with unconfiscable existential minimum (which is arbitrary and very low - like 200$ - one can hardly rent a room and usually ends homeless) until the debt which the individual didn't made in first place is payed.
But it is often impossible to achieve, because the debt is now after years of interest accumulating so high that the penalization for still unpayed part rises (sometimes much) quicker than the salary of the employee is able to repay it.
This people are doomed to 3 possibilities - win jackpot and pay, work hard whole the life and live on existential minimum and maybe pay anyway just part of their debt which will still rise as they pay it, or become expatriates and become immigrants to another country outside EU (the individual mandate is in whole the EU) and never come back. This system is extremely antisocial, because it affects the poorest.
