Off the grid in New Mexico
Submitted by Sheila Survivor on Tue, 06/05/2012 - 14:16What a great sight! Lots of people, lots of open minds... lots I can learn here!
My name is Sheila and I am an off-the-grid at our survival location, already bugged-out, in the wilderness of New Mexico. Coming to you via solar powered, satellite internet and looking forward to making lots of new friends.
Peace,
Sheila

Water
How do you get water? Is there a stream, creek or lake on your land, or do you have a well? Collecting rain? I'm trying to decide if it's necessary to have a river or creek or something or if you can make it work (other than attracting wildlife) via well or something. Land with a natural source of water is significantly more expensive than without- You could get 20-100 acres with no natural source for the same price as around 1 acre with an awesome natural water source - or maybe I just need to do more research. NM seems like the place to be though.
water/stream would be great
as you can dig a pond and raise fish. Water source is the most important and you do not want to dry a well for the pond.

Most of Us Will be off the Grid
If Ron Paul does not get elected. Obamney will continue to spend us into Economic crisis making living on grid too expensive.
I think going back to a rural lifestyle would be good for most of us. My four kids (all teenagers) would hate it but it would be good for them. No more TV. No more Smartphones. No more hours on the internet ( wait a minute) No more video games. Gardening for food. Chopping wood for cooking.
We would have to find entertainment in ordinary things.
The sweet life!
I'd still rather be able to choose the lifestyle rather than having it forced on me.
I agree about choice being preferable!
And you could voluntarily choose to cultivate a lifestyle for yourself & your children such as you described beginning today. And some children (including teens) do not hate it when there is a house rule of, say, no tv/computer games during the school week. When other activities replace "the plug-in drug," they might find themselves pleasantly surprised. (But boredom shouldn't be viewed as a negative. As they say, boredom is the mother of creativity.) They might turn out to be grateful. I hope you'll give it a try! :)
P.S. You might be interested to see the discussion on tv/media a while ago. (http://www.dailypaul.com/234788/question) I see there's now a net -8 votes. Guess some find the mere discussion of the idea a bad thing - likely saboteurs! It's in the interest of some that we remain a country of passive people allowing ourselves to be "amused to death." I'm referring to Niel Postman's book with that title. http://www.amazon.com/Amusing-Ourselves-Death-Discourse-Busi...
P.P.S. I love what you said about "ordinary things." A song for you.

New Mexico has primaries today!
Have you noticed? There is nothing else to talk about TODAY.
Have some grace, you are on DP!!!!!
Ron Paul ... forever.
If you want real off the grid,
You have to leave LAND! Yup, get on a sailboat that is solar/wind powered, learn to free dive and spear fish, gather conch, lobster, and best thing is, you can take your guns and bullion with you. You can go around the world under sail, no fuel.

Which satellite provider do you have.
How much is it a month or is it per bandwith, and is the satellite receiver omnidirectional or a dish?

I envy you--
this was our dream. We are not off the grid, but we can heat our home entirely with wood--
:/
not as good; not good enough, but it's the best we can do at this time--
or ever, I'm afraid.
The envy is positive; I really am happy for you; I applaud you.
it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--
Heating and cooling...
Is the hardest part! You practically have it ready to go. Only a very small DIY hybred wind/solar system is needed if all of your appliances are gas or propane. Propane is very efficient. A propane fridge is very easy to change to burn Natural Gas if you have it.

Welcome!
We love Solar and Wind powered Women here! lol. There are a few of us on here that are also off grid and living as you do. I would not trade the few inconveniences for anything in the world. Way to go!
