Open Thread: Where does the Daily Paul go from here? (I'm going to China)

I know this sounds funny, but I am literally packing my bags right now for China. It is not what you think. My wife, who is a neuroscientist, is presenting a paper at the Human Brain Mapping conference in Beijing. I'm just going along for the ride ;)

I was hoping to be able to slip out the back door and take a little break from the DP for the next 10 days or so, and let the moderators run the show.

But in light of the recent news - Ron Paul's email, and now Rand endorsing Romney - I realize it is incredibly unfair to the moderators, who do such wonderful work with such a thankless task. So expect a little chaos on the site over the next couple of days. The front page might not get updated as much. A lively and spirited debate is likely to ensue. But a little chaos is good, every once in a while.

But this brings up a point I've been thinking quite a bit about and would like your feedback on: The future of the Daily Paul. The Liberty movement is big and sprawling, and the only thing holding this faction together is Ron Paul. And now we are seeing it start to blow apart. People are canceling their subscriptions in droves. Traffic on the site peaked back in January. Ron Paul is retiring from Congress next year.

Does it make sense to go on with a site called the Daily Paul? What began as a search for truth has led us here. I'm not much interested in leading the masses into the Republican party. The Campaign for Liberty and YAL are professional political organizations that will no doubt carry on in that role. I understand that is the path for some, and I respect that. It is not the path for me, and I hope those who disagree will be gracious enough to respect that as well. This site will not become the Daily Rand.

But what will become of this awesome community? Is this the end? What direction should the community take from here?

All of your thoughts are welcome and appreciated.

I likely won't be back online for at least 24 - 36 hours. The flight to Beijing alone is 12 hours! I'll take some pictures and share them with you, somewhere, online. (Maybe here.)

Hold down the fort, be kind, patient and understanding with the moderators. It is really unfair to them for me to leave right in the middle of this. (Sorry guys!)

And if you can afford it, please make a donation to the site which will go to the unsung heroes behind the scenes here who make this site possible and keep this community together. We're good through the convention, thanks to the last moneybomb. Beyond that, we'll have to see. It would be nice to keep the site going through December 21, 2012, when we all check out anyway. ;-)

Thank you everyone for a wonderful ride. Remember that tolerance is the substrate of liberty, and freedom begins with you, It begins in your mind. (I've learned a few things from my neuroscientist wife.) If you are consumed with hatred, fear, anger or spite, you are not close to being free.

And while it sounds like a cliche, they're only cliches because they are true: Love is the answer. Find love in your heart and you will lack for nothing. It is the most powerful force in the Universe.

Onward, friends, with the LOVEOLUTION!

In Love,
Michael

Then how about something like "LIBERTY AWAKENED"?

Then the back round can be designed with pictures of Paul and other people that are significant to liberty. Or even a compiled list of ideas you receive by a certain date could be listed and voted upon by everyone on here. At least we know you all would make our vote count(just had to insert that...lol). What do you think about that idea? Thanks for all you do!

BTW

Your site was better than the official campaign, probably DP was the strongest force behind Ron Paul... But of course, there is always room for improvements :)

Suggestion:

This site is already technically the Drudge Report of our movement and should remain that way. As far as to what it should be re-named, I would recommend something along the lines of "The Daily Lovelution' or something of that nature.

I'm a Professor, my name is Wall

It would be nice

but it does not match the situation which is rather serious. I prefer The Daily Hope...

Heck no this is not the end! This is just the beginning and we all know its no cake walk. We love the DP and you! Please keep it going. We all hit up the DP for the latest and honest info out there! Your an inspiration to us all and your messages move me and especially this one! Wishing you a safe trip :)

Peace and liberty to you and your family~

Keep it DailyPaul

You have a brand now, don't destroy it.

Thanks for all the hard work Micheal, from one of your first readers! This site was a beacon in 2007, and still is!

RP Revolution

the new name

Thank you!

Many thanks for all you have done so far for the liberty movement. We would not be where we are today without your site.

I would love to see dp continue as a place to connect with liberty-minded people. The place to go to find the latest liberty candidates or important bills in congress. Especially with Ron Paul seemingly taking less of a lead role on these matters, we need each other to keep in touch and up to date.

I think it would be appropriate to keep the name in honor of the man who inspired the movement.

Excellent job by the moderators?

The same moderators who deleted my posts and kicked me off for telling what turned out to be the truth about Rand Paul? Those moderators? Well, that was years ago. Perhaps they are not the same moderators. I hope not.

Daily LOVEOLUTION!

(was this already suggested?)

The reason why

We united around one candidate is greater than the candidate. We would have never looked to unite around a presidential candidate had there not been a reason. As such, I would think that there would be enough people to keep this website productive, as there is still desire for a decentralized republic and constitutional liberty. Ron Paul is a worthy man. I see no reason why the name of the wesite should be changed.

Keep it the Daily Paul

One more vote to keep the name the same.

The easiest way to tell someone what I believe is to say, "Ron Paul".

He is the one who built the framework of ideas for us to study and spread. His words should be studied forever.

Limited government, restraint on war and welfare, protection of our rights, sound money, etc.

He also set a great example as a person. He bucked the system for decades with little support or recognition, until we finally woke up. A hero, showing us persistence and the benefit of sticking to principles.

My 2 cents...

#1 What happened to the site after the 2008 election? Nothing. Some people left, but many stayed. I came here virtually every day for the entire 4 years. What if RP had decided not to run this time around? What if, God forbid, something had happened to him?

I would still come here almost every day.

#2 The Daily Paul is not just about Ron Paul. It's a site where like-minded people meet to discuss important issues that affect all of us. You can change the name if you want to, but I personally would leave it as The Daily Paul. Ron Paul is not all this movement is about... but he's definitely the man who woke most of us up. The man who cured our apathy. The name should remain as a tribute to him.

#3 I'm sure the site will have the same vibe it had during the 3 years between elections. We can go back to discussing all the "conspiracy theories" and we can continue to shine a light on our corrupt government. We can continue to be the grass roots organization that we've always been... fighting for liberty.

So all in all, nothing should change with the Daily Paul imho.

Correct.

It should always stay the Daily Paul.

I sort of enjoyed 2009 and 10 on here.

The diehards will be here and the others will weed themselves out.

Everything will be ok.

I agree. It was my favorite time to hang out on the Daily Paul...

...because we could post and discuss whatever we wanted to. We didn't have to worry about the election and how our views would look to people who were brand new to Dr. Paul's ideas. We could put "conspiracy theories" right on the front page so many more people could get in on the discussion.

It'll be nice to go back to those days.

Gained my most general knowledge during those years.

This election cycle, the eduction was focused on strategic placement and function ability working the party. Which is great.

So things will settle down and there will be the continued general learning but now with more strategy involved.

couldn't agree more!

couldn't agree more!

Wow, I missed out!

I should've joined back in 2008! I'm gonna stay and hang out with all of you! You all are the greatest!

RON Paul's rEVOLution

adding to my previous comment after reading others comments....if we use the name Paul.....please be sure to have (BIG letters would be better) the name RON in front of it. Again, Screw you Rand!!!! Bet he was a momma's boy :)......maybe we could convince Ronnie Jr to join us.....daddy probably liked him better anyway , lol.

Alexander C. Smith

rEVOLution

Michael,

I agree with you about us coming together searching for truth. The Ron Paul supporters (I won't use word "Paul" supporter, Paulitical, etc without NOW adding RON in front of it.....screw you Rand!)I have met through this journey have helped me realize and commit to our rEVOLution, with the heavy emphasis on LOVE. I KNOW through seeing great leaders like MLK, Ghandi and Dr. RON Paul that love and compassion are the weapons of any successful rEVOLution. They go hand and hand with dedication, integrity, perseverance, honesty, etc etc.

So I would like to see our movement have the rEVOLution insignia affixed to it. Daily rEVOLution or something like that sounds good to me and I'd like to nominate it for consideration. Dr. RON Paul cured my apathy. I'm wide awake now and don't intend to fall back to sleep. Dr. RON Paul taught me that "truth is treason in the empire of lies" and the rEVOLution movement taught me to always remember "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing". !!!

In Liberty and Peace, Long live the rEVOLution,

OK -- Pizza Bomber here...

I am 46 years old. I am relatively new to this site. I plan to keep my membership as long as it exists. I live in south Carolina. I watched Suriyahfish's Ustream feed of the OK convention. I bought a pizza for them. I've donated to support their lawsuit too. I've never donated to any political campaign because I know they are all corrupt -- but I did donate to Dr. Paul because he is different. I found him last year after I started searching for a candidate worth supporting and to my surprise I actually found one. Mr. Nystrom if you are willing to keep this site I think it would be a benefit for many liberty minded people.

Now it's about the Constitution and the fight to defend it.

setting your expectations to high, can cause depression

Just scared the crap out of me...

Wow, I guess I should have known that a question like would arise eventually, but I never really thought about the possibility that The Daily Paul would be no more. Being on here everyday is as natural and making a cup of coffee each morning.

I just wan't to mention that for me personally, I actually liked this site even more when there were no elections to dedicate our lives to. Don't get me wrong, I've wanted and worked as hard as anyone to get Dr. Paul elected both times, but during those times, this site has been almost solely dedicated to that one cause, with no room for much else. In the down times of the last 3 years or so, it was an entirely different site. One where intellegent people can go and discuss important or intriguing ideas and philosophies about anything. There were tons of posts about gold, and philosophy, and books, and liberty minded businesses. Free state project type posts, and posts about government and international news. Much of it wasn't related directly to Dr. Paul, but it did allow a forum for many different liberty minded types of people of all different backgrounds to discuss an infinite amount of topics. DR. PAUL BROUGHT ME HERE, BUT THATS WHAT KEPT ME.

Also, I vote to definitely keep the name Daily Paul. You said it yourself..."The Liberty movement is big and sprawling, and the only thing holding this faction together is Ron Paul." This is the reason that even if the man isnt in office, the man should still be our figurehead. I also feel we owe it to him to honor him that way.

No one wants to hear the real truth

So I change my comment

How about "The Daily Hope"

How about "The Daily Hope" based on the 2008 campaign slogan?

That sounds Obama-esque

We've got more substance here.

I think something that evokes that it's a daily site to keep the flame of liberty alive, but "Daily Flame" doesn't work, either.

Change name of this site

After what Rand and the campaign did, you ought to think seriously about changing the name of this site, if you intend on keeping it up and having a successful site.

Soo...you think Rand tarnished his father's name?

...no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.

Should not the ethos of this mean that "Paul" still stands for liberty. Ron Paul has worked way too diligently for way too many years for any spout from the spry one to wipe the slate!

Please...

Please do not shut down the site! Us liberty minded folk need places to organize and share ideas and information. It is so important that we have this site. The traffic will return when people realize the DP is continuing and not about Ron anymore but about Ron AND the liberty movement. How's this title: Daily Liberty

I say call it The Daily Paul

There are papers out there today that still carry the name Jeffersonian or Jacksonian. They were started to inform members of a specific movement, and are still around today under the same name, even though they have moved beyond their original purpose.

i agree- 'Daily Paul' should be written in stone

and Ron Paul's books should be made forever available through this site. The man is the spark that started this blaze. To change the name, imho, would be a slap in the face.

Along the line of books

I don't think this site offers material that is currently copyrighted, but if "End The FED by Ron Paul" is still copyrighted then let me know and I'll remove this link to an epub copy of it -> http://www.epubbud.com/book.php?g=KKERQ3UY <-

maybe rename the site 'Reactor 4' for the next few days

seems we're in meltdown

by monday we'll be right as rain : )

Keep it going!

Definitely don't shutdown the DailyPaul. It's been going for 5 years, you've developed a huge community, and they have the ability to influence elections all over the country. Change the name when Ron Paul retires if you want and focus on something more liberty oriented, but don't shut it down. Grow it bigger so that it can raise the funding and turn out the voters to, at a minimum, influence congressional elections and get the right people elected. The DP has already had a huge influence on a presidential election, so there's even more potential out there to be had.

This is our life, our revolution

Ron Paul was always our inspiration and mentor. Yes we had hope for more as our President but he was Never Our LEADER!! The USA is about the people leading not the President. Most people here still don't realize that.
"The Daily Paul" still has work to do. The name is perfect still because if everyone of us acts a little like Ron Paul every day, the world still changes for the better. "WE THE PEOPLE" need to continue the fight. The platform is laid out for us already, the road is paved.

He has lead.

He is a leader. He's not a führer, but a leader in the sense that he motivates, inspires, stays true to convictions rather than being led by the ebb & flow, hem and haw, of the masses. The Jacobin who sees the people and says, I wonder where they're going, I must go lead them, is not Dr. Paul. He sees lemmings running toward the water, ready to jump to Leviathan like collectivist-programmed robots, and instead stands in the middle of the iceberg saying, "but those waters are infested with taxes, NDAA, judicial activism, and not just impoverishment for you, but for your kids!!!"

Are you Angry yet?

Michael I thank you for all

Michael I thank you for all you have done for the liberty movement. I agree, this movement and Daily Paul need to move on and seek a new name. Also, I cannot trust Rand any longer, it appears he has been co-opted by the establishment, therefore we need to seek new leaders with proven track records -- that we can trust without reservation -- to lead any future endeavor. I hope you and your wife have a wonderful trip. Stay safe!

I think it would be sad if you shut down the daily paul

This is one of the top 6000 websites worldwide and one of the top 1500 websites in the US on the internet according to Alexa. I don't know much about how much it costs to run this site but I hope it will find a way sustain itself somehow between advertising, subscriptions, and the occasional money bomb. I think it is far too valuable of a resource for the liberty movement to let it die.

Well said!

I think the biggest obstacle is that most people FEAR liberty. They see liberty as an invitation for terrorists to attack! Folks, you can't just preach liberty without exposing The lies of facism.

truth is on our side...

I saw an article about probability and outcome recently. numbers don't lie! the odds of being killed by:

a drunk pilot: 1 in 257
lightning: 1 in 500,000
robots: 1 in 1,000,000
terrorism: 1 in 2,000,000
heart disese: 1 in 4

drugs are another issue. illegal drugs actually kill less people than sunbathing! (skin cancer)

the hipocracy of facism must be exposed because people buy into it hook line and sinker! otherwise, they would not abandon liberty.

despite the fact that i get a little angry and sound militant, I am for liberty. we must all do whatever we can to further it!

Label Jars, Not People!

To Heck in a Hand Basket

All the psychos on the website have done their best to destroy all the work the Campaign for Liberty has done to make libertarianism mainstream in the GOP.

Rand Paul sets himself or his father up for a VP nod (with his Father's blessing I'm sure), and people throw a giant fit. Not to mention the fact that Rand Paul has been the biggest champion for Liberty we've had in the Senate since Robert Taft. Look at his voting record - it's Pro Liberty EVERY SINGLE TIME.

This movement is not about Ron Paul. Ron Paul DOES NOT WANT THIS MOVEMENT TO BE ABOUT HIM. He wants to change the course of history and change the course of the GOP.

The way all these wingnuts are talking on this site, they're going to stop participating in the GOP and just rejoin the Libertarian Party. Like THAT will work out real well.

STOP TRYING TO DESTROY WHAT WE'VE ACCOMPLISHED. If you truly care about Ron Paul, keep working the GOP system and eventually we will be the GOP.

My suggestions

Here are my suggestions:

1. Demystifying what has happened:
-Where and why did things go wrong?
-What was the tipping point? It seemed that the delegate strategy was working, and then the campaign withdrew all of a sudden?
-How come Rand could endorse incredible flip-flopper?
-Why would RP supporters follow future Ron Paul's endorsments and leadership when Rand, his son, has dissapointed so much?
Ron Paul should answer all these questions and more, for the sake of his supporters... DP should seek interviews with Ron Paul and honest answers until it provides better understanding of the system and its tools. It will serve well for future battles.

2. DP should continue to inform about all misdeeds of politicians that cannot be found anywhere else.

3. DP should be more open to the discussion about politics and economy. It was not wise to question Ron Paul's ideas during a very tense campaign, but now we can relax.
-Prof. Stiglitz raised some very interesting issue about rents which is not easy to solve even with the liberterian philosophy. Stiglitz is wrong when he says that government should spend more. But, he is right when he says that monopoly or cartel which owns or rents scarce resources (water, oil, frequencies), can keep and typically does keep the prices up and steals the people's money even without government. Not to mention the ways in which these monopolies or cartels got to control mentioned resources.
-Also, if some country "liberates" its market, this can destroy her economy when other countries don't. This is exactly what happened to developing countries that applied "recepy" of IMF (liberalization, privatization, stabilization) founded by Freedman et al. This can happen to USA as well, while e.g. huge China is helping its industry by non-liberal means such as dumping or so.

4. Leaders of the future movement with their names and photos must be promoted on DP. So far, we had Tom Woods, Judge Napolitano, Michael Nystrom, Peter Schiff, taking some lead, but it is not enough. More people are needed to form a team. Maybe, blogs should be organized for each of these leaders. Also, known members with the largest numbers of bookmarks should get the space on the front page.

5. Web site should be rethought. I think that some important threads should be on the front page permanently that would collect the important info of a specified kind. For example, in the campaign, we should have had a thread with fraud evidences, or a thread with evidences of media bias and so on. Now, we could have thread with war reporting, that would include views of international members, or a thread with Rockefeller (and such) whereabouts :)

The Daily Paul

is inspired by Ron Paul. That's what that picture up there ^ says right? Not the Daily Paul is Ron Paul. I don't think anything needs to change after Ron Paul retires. Peace, Gold, and Liberty is what this site is all about, not necessarily just Ron Paul.

IMHO...

I would like to see "The Daily Paul" stay "The Daily Paul" because no matter what happens..Dr. Paul opened my eyes and this site showed me that I was not alone.
As for you Michael...I remember when your screen name was "MANYSTROM" and my eyes use to see it as "many strong". I always thought THAT was why you chose it...lol...then I realized it was your name...but you know what...YOU have showed us that we ARE many strong!

I hope you and your Wife have a wonderful trip. Be safe, Be good...and Much Luv and Respect to you =)

Become a full news site like Drudge or HuffPo

Bring news in from all over the web like you do already, but make it a focus. The DP could be a great filter for all the garbage out there. A little bit of commentary from the liberty perspective on the daily political and cultural happenings would be hugely valuable for many people.

You've got the brand, the trust and a well trafficked site. If Drudge is "right" and HuffPo is "left" then let DP be the reasonable and rational "middle" that calls out the the fake red v blue game.

Have regular contributors like Tom Woods, Schiff, Mullen, etc. and of course Ron Paul. Have online debates with lefties and righties. Forge alliances with other similar-minded sites and slowly build up unique/premium content (ie custom news stories with the liberty spin).

I really think you have a solid foundation here with lots of potential. Without the DP, it's not clear how the liberty movement stays connected. We all need this platform and this voice... to advance our beliefs... and to know we're not alone.

I've check this site almost daily since 2007. It would be a sad day for me if it went away. I hope you keep the DP alive long term.

Thanks for all you've done.

JB

Absolutely

I agree with another poster that BETWEEN elections the site was just fantastically interesting and it stayed on the track of Liberty. With a full spectrum of news from all over the world, great writers contributing from time to time, news on local and state candidates and issues, this is my "all day long" site to find out all the news that's fit to print.

I wouldn't change the name.... and I would keep it going for the FAMILY that has been formed via Daily Paul. Some of us don't have OTHER family that we can talk to as freely as we talk here and this site would be sorely missed.

ALL of this is to say that I believe there is a DEFINITE PURPOSE to keeping DP going..... WITH THE CAVEAT that we cannot expect you to do this by yourself, Michael. This began as a hobby and became a mission, and you do have to feed your family. SO it is your call as to whether or not you can find a way to FINANCE it and to MONITOR it without it eating up all of your time on a volunteer basis.

You may not want to hear this, but I believe that God has given you Daily Paul as your mission and your vocation in the liberty movement. You didn't ask for that.... but that's what you've got. With MoneyBombs and subscriptions and hopefully some kindly volunteers to help, perhaps you can find a way to keep going.

THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART! SALUD MI AMIGO!
