Open Thread: Where does the Daily Paul go from here? (I'm going to China)

I know this sounds funny, but I am literally packing my bags right now for China. It is not what you think. My wife, who is a neuroscientist, is presenting a paper at the Human Brain Mapping conference in Beijing. I'm just going along for the ride ;)

I was hoping to be able to slip out the back door and take a little break from the DP for the next 10 days or so, and let the moderators run the show.

But in light of the recent news - Ron Paul's email, and now Rand endorsing Romney - I realize it is incredibly unfair to the moderators, who do such wonderful work with such a thankless task. So expect a little chaos on the site over the next couple of days. The front page might not get updated as much. A lively and spirited debate is likely to ensue. But a little chaos is good, every once in a while.

But this brings up a point I've been thinking quite a bit about and would like your feedback on: The future of the Daily Paul. The Liberty movement is big and sprawling, and the only thing holding this faction together is Ron Paul. And now we are seeing it start to blow apart. People are canceling their subscriptions in droves. Traffic on the site peaked back in January. Ron Paul is retiring from Congress next year.

Does it make sense to go on with a site called the Daily Paul? What began as a search for truth has led us here. I'm not much interested in leading the masses into the Republican party. The Campaign for Liberty and YAL are professional political organizations that will no doubt carry on in that role. I understand that is the path for some, and I respect that. It is not the path for me, and I hope those who disagree will be gracious enough to respect that as well. This site will not become the Daily Rand.

But what will become of this awesome community? Is this the end? What direction should the community take from here?

All of your thoughts are welcome and appreciated.

I likely won't be back online for at least 24 - 36 hours. The flight to Beijing alone is 12 hours! I'll take some pictures and share them with you, somewhere, online. (Maybe here.)

Hold down the fort, be kind, patient and understanding with the moderators. It is really unfair to them for me to leave right in the middle of this. (Sorry guys!)

And if you can afford it, please make a donation to the site which will go to the unsung heroes behind the scenes here who make this site possible and keep this community together. We're good through the convention, thanks to the last moneybomb. Beyond that, we'll have to see. It would be nice to keep the site going through December 21, 2012, when we all check out anyway. ;-)

Thank you everyone for a wonderful ride. Remember that tolerance is the substrate of liberty, and freedom begins with you, It begins in your mind. (I've learned a few things from my neuroscientist wife.) If you are consumed with hatred, fear, anger or spite, you are not close to being free.

And while it sounds like a cliche, they're only cliches because they are true: Love is the answer. Find love in your heart and you will lack for nothing. It is the most powerful force in the Universe.

Onward, friends, with the LOVEOLUTION!

In Love,
Michael

This is a good place

I just made the half-way switch from the reddit community to this one, where I've enjoyed campaigning for Paul in the liberal/socialist/internationally flavored politically vocal areas of that community of million's.

I'm living in a really red county in CA. I realized, much too late, that if I had wanted to influence the direct vote in my country I would have had to drive hours away and play golf. Literally. I thought about it...last gulf I played was miniature.

Reddit will have wonderful headlines about Paul again, and the Liberty movement is not going away any time soon. I head that 1/3 of the Los Angeles commite are with us. Small victories are stil victories, the movement has had a lot of them, and they are going to continue to add up. May I ask your state? I've been sitting on the side-lines and cheering, maybe I know a good bit of news from your area?

Edit : I feel that I should foot note that reddit is not currently a favorable place to be pro Paul, not in most areas, though they did loudly proclaim support for the caucus in Louisiana when they noted it and the violence, and in the past they had a lot of large scale threads on a daily basis about Paul.

However, I have - 2 for saying this "As fraudulently elected delegates are [officially revealed and removed](http://www.bradblog.com/?p=9316) state by state, the finial delegate count may very well see Paul with a majority at the convention. With [success by groups like this](http://www.electionfraudremedy.com/) in the offering, I see a real reason to hope that we will see President Paul in the white house by this winter. "

Anyway, this is far from over.

Whoa, now...

Call the site what you will, but, this place has become my main sounding board and the source of pertinent information regarding current issues that matter most to myself. This site is a necessity. We will continue processing the information and people will grow and develop. Most will come to healthy terms with the recent happenings. I do not feel defeated, nor will I ever accept the concept. Keep calling it the dailypaul, in my opinion. It's totally appropriate. Besides, it isn't over yet, ever. Many thanks, to you, Michael, and much appreciation to all of those working to make this community thrive.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip. We will survive, no worries.

Thank you Michael

Have a great trip Michael!

Have a very good trip to China! And whatever you decide to do with the Daily Paul, you have already performed a tremendous service to the liberty movement by running this site for so many years, and I am honored to be among your online brothers-in-arms!

Namaste, brother.

Maybe It's Wishful Thinking...but

I think Ron Paul will not just disappear from the scene after the election, maybe he'll just slow down a little. There may be as much or more to report and discuss next year.

bigmikedude's picture

I look forward to the plans for Daily Paul in the future

We do have some ideas, although nothing is concrete yet, and my personal opinion is that without the constraints of being a Ron Paul site after a great era comes to a close, it will open up a much less restrained opportunity for other topics and discussion.

Things that were controversial to our main focus - Ron Paul - won't really matter as much anymore, and hopefully Daily Paul (whatever we decide to name it) will continue to offer a great hang out for one of the greatest communities I have ever been a part of. Maybe even becoming inviting to all interested in going down the rabbit holes and expanding their minds and critical thinking.

Maybe sometimes no political affiliation at all, has greater prospects for bringing people of all walks together with ideas, than being constrained to what is expected...

I guess we'll see.

Hey Brother Mike...

I am in agreement with you. I have all these carrots I have been saving for the rabbits. After Martfuncher disappeared someone had to keep the garden alive. ; )

The Daily Cato

Marcus Porcius Cato Uticensis (95 BC, Rome – April 46 BC, Utica), commonly known as Cato the Younger (Cato Minor) to distinguish him from his great-grandfather (Cato the Elder), was a politician and statesman in the late Roman Republic, and a follower of the Stoic philosophy. A noted orator, he is remembered for his stubbornness and tenacity (especially in his lengthy conflict with Julius Caesar), as well as his immunity to bribes, his moral integrity, and his famous distaste for the ubiquitous corruption of the period.

Cato's Letters were essays by British writers John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon, first published from 1720 to 1723 under the pseudonym of Cato (95–46 BC), the implacable foe of Julius Caesar and a famously stubborn champion of republican principles.

Ron Paul is such a unique and dynamic person: even after

his term ends as a congressman, I trust that he will play a vital role in the Liberty Movement, perhaps together with the good Judge Nap. It may be possible & viable for DP to continue to be active through their initiatives...maybe. (I seriously doubt if GOP is up to such a grand paradigm-shifting task.)

Have a great time in Beijin, Michael & S! The Beijin Univ medical school has a historical museum, which starts with a replica of Pekin Man - the first known man to stand erect. And to think that you can now consult with the mapped brain there! We, humans, sure came a long way :-)

The Daily Truth

Just an idea :)

Have a wonderful trip, Michael. Viva la Lovelution!!!

The Daily Paul has to stay

Like you said, it was Ron Paul who brought us all together. We all came here in search of the truth. It was this site that allowed a community to share its ideas with the world. You cannot change the name. If you plan on continuing with a site that is dedicated to the spread of the liberty, freedom, peace, gold, and love messages, then there is no more fitting a name than The Daily Paul. If this really is the end of the road for Ron Paul then we should honor him by delivering his message and ideas into the future. The Daily Paul and its community have more work to do.

DailyPaul as a name is GREAT

DailyPaul as a name is GREAT AND FINE.

Keep it that way, it's short, it gets to the point, and Paul isn't dead.

Just because a site is named Huffingtonpost, Breitbart or DrudgeReport, doesn't mean its content is primarily of and concerning Ariana Huffington, Andrew Breitbart or Matt Drudge.

People remember site names, and traffic should never drop because of a name or URL change, that's a very superficial thing to waste time over. As long as there are people who will continue to read and contribute to this site, this site has value.

DailyKos eventually had YearlyKos, which is now officially called Netroots nation, who cares about names? We care about keeping the traffic and readers constant, easy to access and useful.

The Daily Liberty is a great name...BUT... I really want us to

get behind Judge Andrew Napolitano.

I have no clue what his plans or goals are... But as much as I feel comfortable with President Ron Paul, I can easily get comfortable with a President Andrew Napolitano... our first Italian-American President? How about "The Daily Napolitano"????

Anyway, only the Judge Andrew Napolitano is one of US now....

And SORRY Rand Paul, I will vote OBAMA before I would vote Romney (for the simple reason Obama is out in 4 years)

I like the Judge too

And hopefully someone will make a site to support him, and whoever does, I wish them the best of luck. But it won't be me.

This was a one shot deal for Ron Paul. I'm not going to live my life trying to recreate something. Every day is a new day.

Thank you Treg, for all of your contributions here. I have appreciated reading your thoughts through the years.

This is a movement now

It is not about any one candidate.

The candidates cater to us now, not the opposite.

We are the movement of liberty. The movement has just begun.

Jefferson's picture

I guess this

was as good a time as any to ask this question. I will do what I can to continue my limited financial support. The Daily Paul has been a part of my life now for almost half a decade, and has been a gift in so many ways.
Frankly, it was a bit more interesting when we could delve into controversial subjects when we didn't have to worry about affecting someone else's reputation.
Seeking, speaking, and striving to expose the truth was/is much more satisfying.
I am also glad you are also not interested in using your time and resources to support the GOP. I don't feel like supporting them in any way at this point in time. It just seems like another mechanism they use to keep us divided and conquered. I get the feeling this "Rand endorsement" is not the only revelation that will come in the next few weeks. Who knows WHAT is in store? My instinct tells me to continue to brace for impact.
Thank you, and everyone else who has sacrificed their time and effort to not only keep this place running, but make all the improvements.. I will make a donation in the next couple of days.
Have a safe and memorable trip. Enjoy yourselves. After all, the ONE thing they can't take from us are the good memories.

We'll get back there soon enough. You're also on my all time Daily Paul hall of fame list.

After all, the ONE thing they can't take from us are the good memories.

Truer words have not been spoken.

Please don't send money friend. You've done more than enough. Take care of yourself, first and foremost. I'm glad to see you here on the site.

And now I've got to hit the sack for a couple of winks. I've got a plane to catch in 5 hours!

"Let it not be said that no one cared, that no one objected once it's realized that our liberties and wealth are in jeopardy." - Dr. Ronald Ernest Paul

Please wait

Wait until after Ron Paul does whatever he is going to do at the GOP convention in Tampa. The daily Paul is an icon and shutting it down before then would give everyone another (false) indicator that Ron Paul is defeated.

agreed

.

Call it the "The Daily Liberty"

Ron Paul jump started the movement and we will now take the torch and move forward stronger than ever.

Who is with me?

Great idea... there is enough going on on Liberty or lack of liberty to keep postings live and to keep us learning from one another. And hopefully many more changes to come!

Can we replace Rand Paul's quick like with one for Gary Johnson? We don't agree with Gary Johnson and I'm frankly disappointed in his apparent misunderstanding of libertarianism and his campaign's focus on marijuana legalization, yet his campaign (and specifically getting the LP over 5% nationally) has a great potential to change the American politics.

Anyways, maybe you should all ignore my ramblings.

I want to visit this website everyday for rest of my life

Hello Michael,

I am an Indian, but visit this website as much as any US citizen does. I want to visit this website everyday for rest of my life to remind myself about Ron Paul and his values. I suggest you to keep the same domain and take the fight for liberty ahead. We will surely not have more Ron Paul articles to post, but many people are inspired by Ron Paul will fight elections in near future and we need to keep this website running.

You know the one force which brings us together.. and he is Ron Paul, so there is no way we can let that name disappear. So I suggest to keep domain name with information on more liberty minded candidates.

Thank You Michael

I have been here for 4 yrs and 22 weeks, and this is my home page. Some of you wonderful people are .... really the words are just stuck in my throat. I think that you should still have Romney advertisement on this site, so his group can pay for keeping to keep the site open. I will continue to make hits on his page to keep the cost low for us.

Still hoping for unbound delegate miracles to happen.

But safe journey for you and your wife.

With such a following on here, being mentioned by the MSM several times, and being the only true source of honest Paul/Liberty information, I think it would be very unwise to shut the site down. After all that has transpired over the last 4 years, this seems to be on of the only bastions of accurate news and information, not to mention networking.

Ha ha!

I saw your other thread! Did you see what I posted? I knew you wouldn't leave.

Anyway, it won't be so much a new site as a transformation of this one. It is not the website that matters, but the community that gathers here. I'm blessed and honored by your presence, and we are all blessed and honored by each other.

For the next 10 days, I'm not going to think about Ron or Rand or the GOP or the Convention or anything. I'm going to enjoy Beijing, and I'm going to share it with any and all of my friends who want to listen.

Thank you friend.

Hey Michael

Yes....I saw what you posted. I'm sure you had to...sniff....break out the tissues when you read that thread. :)

I posted that if you started a new site.....I'd be there.....I won't be back to this one after the convention.

I wish I could not think about Ron, the GOP....or the convention....for ten whole days......

But I have to....if I want to figure out a way to financially make my Tampa convention trip work.

Have a safe trip to China Michael.

Peace

I was in Bejing this last February. Go Climb the Great Wall!

I did and it was great! Enjoy yourself. Make sure to eat a duck--sooo good. Don't let the rickshaw guys hussle you, either. Have fun. Keep your eyes on the sky--I saw a UFO! It was an orange ball and moved so fast. Seems like people see them often in China. I still can't believe it. Good luck!!

At the moment, all I can think of is getting contact info from a number of DP'ers before the plug is pulled.

Stay safe blessing of peace to you my friend

Thank you Tom

I appreciate the kind words. I have been thinking about you, and wondering how you have been doing. Among the people who have made an impact on me here at the Daily Paul, you rank right up at the top.

I applaud your courage for posting the Gary Johnson video. The Daily Paul can be a rough place, which is unfortunate, and a certain source of sadness for me. That people have to toe a line - a line of some kind.

That is getting blown up today. It had to happen sooner or later.

The New Daily Paul (whatever it is called) will not be like that. It will be a place where tolerance is respected, and a much wider range of ideas can be discussed.

Thank you so much Tom. It is not so much the site that matters, but the community that chooses to gather together, and what we choose to do.

It's my opinion that the Daily Paul should be renamed the Daily Liberty. Without Ron Paul in Congress, we still have Justin Amash and whatever allies we can find for him.

Just make sure they

Just make sure they understand you do not speak Chinese (if that is indeed the case). Then they'll chalk up your not following instructions to you just being an "ignorant foreigner". LOL. But seriously, when I went the Asian people I was with got much harsher treatment than I did since I do not look remotely Chinese.

Also, when I went I left all computers and phones in America. If you take these things they will demand access to your passwords. Too much trouble and too much room for potential trouble.
