Talking Points Need a Makeover

0 votes

How would you word Dr. Paul's main positions on the important issues to other people without launching into a lecture.

Top Issues of voters:

1. Terrorism/Iraq
2. Economy
3. Healthcare

and address them as follows

1. RP's summarized position on all 3
2. Why I should support his position on all 3
3. What his position on all 3 means to me and my family

In the interest of getting us all on the same page, I reviewed http://www.ronpaul2008.com/issues/

it seems very wordy in todays MTV world.

Suggestions?

Campaign Advert with this content needed:

Video footage of George Bush in the Gore debate saying that we are against nation building, for humble foreign policy, not being the world's policeman...

Video footage of Paul O'Neill stating that regime change in Iraq was on the table at the very first cabinet meeting, long before 9/11...

Ron Paul does not have to say "read my lips." Ron Paul speaks the truth and he has a voting record to back this up 100%.

Has the time not come for you to examine the record and dismiss the rhetoric?

Quotes from McCain saying that Iraq will be easy, no door-to-door fighting... and then quotes in the debate where he said he always said it would be along battle... etc.

Your freedom, your safety and your future are protected by the Constitution. Only Ron Paul has proven his unwaivering commitment to the Constitution. It's a no-brainer, vote the Constitution, vote Ron Paul.

very good points to expand

very good points to expand on!

Ron Paul keeps mentioning the above...

... in debates and interviews. It needs to be documented in a video. Did Bush really say that? Yes, here's the video footage. Oh my! Did O'Neill really say this? Yes, here;s the quote out of his book. Did McCain say this... yes, here's the hard evidence. Home run for Dr. Paul. It is not negative campaigning. It's setting the record straight.

Plano TX

video sure says it all!

video sure says it all!

For real... look people,

For real... look people, Paul has two major audiences... the first are the ones who got the message and are interested... they'll forgive style and focus on substance... HOWEVER.... there is the undecided, window shopping, is-this-guy-for-real ? crowd who can be swayed in either direction. IMO opinion RP's delivery could be improved by a wide margin.Come to think of it, can you imagine anyone you know, friends, family members, community leaders who would not benefit from constructive coaching ? RP is human, he has human limitations, no different from you and me.... we shouldn't put him on an unreal pedestal, and he wouldn't want himself put on one... Paul's strength is that he thinks like a regular guy, he understands exactly what insulated careerist pricks and infighters don't... what regular people live and breathe as reality... Paul's weakness is that he IS in the alligator pit with seasoned professionals and he's got to master some of their game skills... that doesn't make him phony or a sell out, it does make him a cogent contender who knows the lay of the land. We're probably all dreading subconsciously what occured when Al Gore was talked into that freak show of alpha male crap which just about toasted his public image overnight. Got it, no good, don't even think of going there.

What RP needs is some firm old time dudes who know the art of public speaking dating from the days of the Roman Sanate... he needs to be sat down with a few hours worht of his recording materiaL, and analyse his strengths and weaknesses.... sheesh... if we'd all have that opportunity to be self improved how much bettter life would get all around...

"When Cicero spoke the people were in awe, when Caeser spoke the people marched"
-Cato

And maybe a public speaking coach?

While Ron's talking points are logically unassailable, I wish that he would slow down more, and FINISH HIS SENTENCES! He weakens his message considerably (and sometimes fatally) by jumping from point to point without finishing the thought and the sentence.

Am I the only one who cringes when this happens?

P.S. Please don't call me a troll for being honest.

It's the truth, but it's

It's the truth, but it's also probably something that will not change. What could very easily change is the method our good doctor uses to address questions.

One could always keep in mind to FOCUS ON A SINGLE TOPIC, for example, if you made "CHANGE" your single topic/campaign strategy, you would always find a way to return to the Change topic, no matter the question. Most politicians are good at this, and it just reinforces your point during the course of a conversation. This doesn't mean that you ignore unrelated questions, but it does get your conversation back on track quickly. One thing I would suggest Dr. Paul to absolutely avoid... going off on unrelated tangents, which he does all the time. Yes, strictly speaking, his subjects usually are related, but something vastly different does not need to be introduced every time a topic is discussed. The impression is that the person is scatterbrained. Topic focus is hugely important.

Ron Paul words

maryj
Ron Pauls words won me over.

Let his words that have been drawing in the masses continue
on without us trying to put words in his mouth!!!

Liberty is our campaigns gift to the world it is our manifest destiny.
Freedom is a movement who's time has come. Our campaign will lead world wide freedom.

The people, not the "masses".

Sorry to nit-pick, but "masses" is a Marxist term of contempt for the people. I know you didn't mean it that way, but it's worth keeping in mind that people have no problem with being called one of the people. Nobody likes to think of themselves as "one of the masses."

Refine our message not Ron Paul's

I don't want to put words in RP's mouth even if I could. I want to refine our message on the 3 biggest issues/concerns of US voters

1. Terrorism/Iraq
2. Economy
3. Healthcare

and address them as follows

1. RP's summarized position on all 3
2. Why I should support his position on all 3
3. What his position on all 3 means to me and my family

This seems like a good place to start.

"None are so hopelessly enslaved as those who falsely believe they are free." - Goethe

"None are so hopelessly enslaved as those who falsely believe they are free." - Goethe

the best of us can always improve and learn

that goes for politicians too! I don't think anyone wants to force feed him, LOL, but even professional athletes still have coaches!

The single biggest thing

The single biggest thing Ron Paul can do to win is to stop saying "they attack us because we're over there." Technically he's correct and I understand how he means it, but the way it comes out, it makes it sound as if he's saying we should act like a bunch of pussies and apologize to Al Qaeda.

If he were to instead say something like "The purpose of the American military isn't to protect Korea, or Japan. Its purpose isn't to overthrow Middle Eastern dictators. The purpose of the American military is to PROTECT AMERICA" it would totally get the Fox-news-pro-national-security types on his side. They love it when candidates stress the word "AMERICA."

He could also turn the "isolationist" thing on its head, by saying "We're more isolated in the world than we've ever been. Our relations with other countries are in shambles..." etc.

I've got lots of love for the Doctor, but I cringe every time he explains the war issue in a debate and gets booed. He's totally wording it the wrong way.

agree on that

His policy is so American but he does sort of phrase it like we are the villains and what voters are gonna get excited about that??

On Leno's show he got the most applause (beyond the supporters there) when he said we should return that trillion dolllars spent on Iraq back to America and fix our place! That resonates just as you've suggested.

I do thnk there's room to talk about how we started the Iraq war and not vice-versa. Pre emptive wars are a neocon creation and not in the American tradition.

I Like Bullet Points

The Bullets are great because they can be used as an outline for debates, precinct calls or every day conversation when printed. I might change a couple short explanations, like:

* By restoring our Constitution we prevent a plethora of new laws each year.
* Economy - Notice prices going up? We can stop this by restoring our monetary policy.

Similar to that concept. You've told the bullet points and the benefit but still not explaining how.

3 Issues needing a makeover

I've been looking at the polling data to help determine the priorities.

thus far:
http://www.pollingreport.....

Top Issues

Repubs
1. Terrorism
2. Economy
3 Healthcare

Dems
1. Iraq
2. Economy
3. Healthcare

1. How does troop withdrawal from Iraq protect our national security and me and my family against terrorism?.
2. Why should I support RP's economic plan? How will it affect me and my family?.
3. Why should I want RP's healthcare plan? How will it affect me and my family?

I think if we can answer these questions, we would have something remarkable to offer RP's supporters."None are so hopelessly enslaved as those who falsely believe they are free." - Goethe

"None are so hopelessly enslaved as those who falsely believe they are free." - Goethe

You're right... Answering

You're right...

Answering your questions is difficult since people do not believe they can take care of themselves:

1. No Iraqi governement has ever delclared war against the US, so it makes no sense to be there. Terrorism (from Islam) would go away if we stopped getting involved in other people's business. Plus we need to stop looking at one country or another - terrorists attack who is in control and as being involved everywhere the US will always be a target. Most countries would hand over their terrorists if they only attacked us for our freedom and prosperity - that is deplorable in every human culture.
2. RP's economics are simple - give less of your tax money away and give it back to you. Do whatever you want with it. But don't expect the governement to solve all your problems. With the money in the hands of the people more goods will flow at a cheaper rate - look at how fast the internet blossomed when the govt(military) got out of the way.
3. RP's healthcare is essentially the same as 2. you are in charge of your own care. Not immediately but eventually that is the plan. (this is his hardest challange) You must have faith in the free market - especially when RP cuts down the FDA and allows people to get medicine from any country. Costs will come down and advances will continue to be made to meet market expectations.

Sorry if these are too long-winded.

What's the issue of the day

What's the issue of the day at a site like AARP? And also, maybe women here could provide insight to women's concerns.

AARP site

I looked at the AARP site last week and RP and candidates positions are there as they relate to AARP principles given.

RP's match precisely, and I would venture that his record does too.

The way I see his

The way I see his message...

Ron Paul wants give control of your lives back to you. Simple as that.
1. Issues to republicans are strong leadership for the middle and family class - be it against percieved enemies or preserving a "traditional" way of life.
2. Basically all voters are concerned with their own well-being (i.e. economy, health and security) - I think Paul should continue to hit the weak dollar/rising gold and upcoming stagflation forcasts to bolster his points. The upcoming economic crisis is a (pardon the pun) a golden opportunity.
3. The best way to streamline those issues is to say that "you are the best person to decide what is best for you" in any matter, and as the leader of the country I would give you the most opportunties to execise those decisions whatever they are.
4. The campaign speaks for Ron Paul - we should stop thinking as needing "direction". Really for Ron Paul's campaign to work the people must perform spontaneously - thus proving his philosophy that individuals making their own decisions come up with the best ideas (see Trevor Lyman)
5. Good post and I think it is best to discuss how to refine the message. Talk to people about the idea of individual liberty, government excess but don't seem too biased. Ron Paul is not perfect and his policy will not be perfect, but if he can get more people talking and thinking about these ideas then he has won.

I think that we are ignoring the newspaper media - Ron Paul is scantly covered there. How about a "letter to the editor" bomb? How about taking out classified ads? "Want to end the war in Iraq and save our sinking dollar? Call 1-800-RON-PAUL"

Keep positive - what happens here will impact the whole world.

Good points. Can you turn

Good points. Can you turn these into headlines, or conversation starters? Put yourself in this frame of mind. You want to ask someone out on a date (or if you are married, imagine you want to get your spouse to do something they don't want to do... how can you do it in a positive way?)... now put that same charm into a phrase for this campaign... what would you say?

Talking points are points

Talking points are points you use when you "talk" to someone. We don't need an online interactive document. Our weakness is our over-reliance on the Internet. In this campaign, even the Internet can become a liability.

One-on-one real live human communications is where we need improving.
