How to Teach My Children About LibertySubmitted by jrleroy85 on Tue, 06/12/2012 - 01:27
I have two children (3 year old daughter and 1 year old son) and a wife who literally could not care less about politics. Believe me, I've tried to convince my wife, but she remains completely apathetic (is 26 and has never once voted in her life) and is most definitely still a work in progress.
My question is about how early I should start teaching my children about the ideals of liberty and about which approach I should take. For example, I told my 3 year old daughter a bedtime story several weeks ago about the tyranny and oppression that our Founding Fathers fought against and my wife looked at me like I was a lunatic. Is it ok to tell bedtime stories like that to a 3 year old (nothing gruesome, just telling her our nation's history), or is my wife right and I'm a little bit crazy? To be fair, my daughter absolutely loved it and kept interrupting me to ask questions about what "tyranny", "constitution", and "revolution" meant.
I'm just looking at it as my daughter has always been incredibly intelligent (talking in full sentences since before she was even 1 year old), so I figure I might as well make the most of it and teach her to fight for liberty like the rest of us. . . but then again, I can still see my wife's point about how bedtime stories should be about sugarplum fairies and all that. So, any ideas would be very, very helpful!!
