"Gov. Bob McDonnell, who is on a trade mission in Europe, has endorsed Bolling for the nomination. He had urged the State Central Committee to stick with a primary.
Friday's vote was swayed by a wave of newly elected committee members, many of whom represented tea party interests and were supporters of Rep. Ron Paul's presidential candidacy.
Those constituencies are believed to favor Cuccinelli, who has gained their embrace by railing against government overreach and by filing lawsuits against the federal health care overhaul and against greenhouse gas regulations advanced by the Environmental Protection Agency."
