Iowa Ron Paul central committee member says he doesn't anticipate any attempt to nominate Ron Paul

From REASON Magazine.
"Dubuque Republican Dave Cushman, a liberty activist and new GOP state central committee member,... said he doesn’t anticipate any attempt to nominate Paul as president instead of Romney.

'The goal is not to embarrass the party, ... 'The goal is to make the party stronger and broaden the base, and walk the Republican talk.'"

I am confused.

This article and the furor it has created have had me confused so I've done some research on my own to try to figure out the facts.

I read the article linked above. That took me to the article in The Des Moines Register with the original quote. It was written by Jennifer Jacobs, writer for the paper, and published at 5:38 p.m. on June 16th. A Google search led me to another article by the same author, same day, published at 11:24 p.m. which is longer but essential says the same thing (with the correction of the word "rabble", thank goodness).

I would think Miss Jacobs is supposedly 'neutral' in her reporting but I sense a subtle undercurrent of derision when it comes to Ron Paul supporters. I may be wrong in that but it's my 'sense' of her writing.

Another article by Miss Jacobs on June 15th at 9:00 p.m. gives a summary of the convention situation at that time. In that article she points out:

"Paul backers said those candidates are simply good constitutional conservatives. Instead of gunning for Paul to be the presidential nominee, they will press for the Paul philosophy of limited government, they said." (Her words.)

It seems to me that Miss Jacobs could as well have found people with more positive things to say about the "Liberty movement", "Liberty activists", etc. if she had chosen to do so. There was no shortage of people who supported those philosophies at the convention. But instead she quoted THIS ONE person.

Some study of the organization of the Republican Party took me to The Republican Party of Iowa website:

I have read all the comments on this thread and, while it's entirely possible I've missed something, I don't recall any Iowa delegate refuting Mr. Cushman's comments or clearing up what he is talking about.

I have found NOTHING to show that Mr. Cushman is speaking in an official capacity, or that there have been 'orders' or 'instructions' given to anyone, from anyone in the party, or the Ron Paul campaign regarding the nomination of Ron Paul in Tampa.

Therefore my only conclusion is that Mr. Cushman is speaking his own opinion and that holds no more weight than your's or mine.

Personally, I will dismiss Mr. Cushman, press on to NOMINATION and support the delegates in their fight to WIN.

I'm just praying the delegates don't cave in

Maybe the newspaper made up the no intention bit (they'll do that you know). I truly hope so. If This guy really said that, I hope he's just playing it cool until the convention.

Wead said the same thing to CBS

I know they're trying to raise the standing of the libertarian folks, but Dr. Paul's election is an opportunity that shouldn't be passed up.

Smoke and Mirrors

Don't you just wonder if its just smoke and mirrors to try and get Romney to stop worrying? I hope so and remember Weed is always implying he can't say . . .too much.

boomers do what boomers' gotta do to survive in their little

circles. let's try sending in people under 30 now on. boomers can't see the future. once they get in, it's all peer pressure. we need something to shield us from that. perhaps it best to send in people who grew up under a different american period and background. the boomer peer pressure is too immense and it has turned some of our best and most prominent--i think we have seen that. it's time to send in people with an age gap to shield us from the peer pressure generated from age itself, from growing up under too close of an american background, from a position where peer pressure makes you vulnerable. to point out as well, ron paul is almost 20 years older than everybody else, and it might be one of his hidden, because few have noticed, recipe of success in washington--age gap, making him less vulnerable to peer pressure, in addition to who he already was, of course, but his generation was less corrupted in the first place. let's try sending in people under 30. it is worth a try--may be an understatement in fact. it could be the silver bullet.

Everything wrong in Congress and this country has a army of Boomers backing it......well said....

I got a letter from Split Rominee of Boston Massachusetts

So the question is, how did Romney get my address ? I assume somebody SOLD it to them... nice huh ?.....boy do i feel raped and robbed for some reason...it just keeps getting better...whats next?
Anyway, i hope the Delegates do what they say their gonna do otherwise i hold in my hand a very expensive envelope and in it a very expensive...jelly donut..

Either HAVE your cake, or EAT IT

but you cannot have both!

Look, the 'National Campaign' used PLAUSABLE DENIABILTY to their benefit for FIVE YEARS.

We put banners EVERYWHERE, and when 'the Man' complained, they repeatedly stated "Oh, that's the Grass Roots - we don't have any control over what individuals do."

They have 'distanced' themselves from us, and now they want to turn that around. For the longest time in the beginning, I heard more complaints about NOT HAVING OUR CALLS RETURNED than anything else; until we got used to it, and it became the standard for us to work in our own ideas, at our own pace, ON OUR OWN DIME.

In a word, LIBERTY.

Well guess what?

We Delegates and Alternates are GOING TO TAMPA, and we are going to DO AS WE WILL. Not as we are 'told', 'instructed', 'advised' or any other kind of 'control mechanism' that ANYONE tries to lay on us!

Let me explain something.

The Republican Party CANNOT use the main tactic preferred across the Nation at State confabs at the RNC with every Lamestream Media Wonk watching (turn off the microphones, then turn out the lights) for the World to see.

That means they have to have other 'controls' in place (intimidation or coercion) to prevent any ONE of the thousands of Credentialed Delegates from stepping up and 'speaking their mind' to the Delegation, and the World.

We aren't in the 'script', but you can bet that we are 'Wildcards' purely by attending.

The is what the GOP is sweating about.

BIG time.

Look for every possible increase in pressure on the Paul Campaign to 'reel in their Mavericks', but it will be to no avail!

Rights are like muscles; you must exercise them to keep them fit, or they will atrophy and die.

There is no compromising

with the corrupted establishment gop and there is really no reason to try.
The Establishment Grand OLD Party needs to get with the program and step up to the plate and support the Restoration of the Constitutional Republic. Nothing less will do at this point. There is too much at stake. Our Childrens future and they will have one.

Well, I'm just a nobody but...

Dave can want in one hand and...

Embarrass the party??

Are we talking about the GOP, the very poster party for embarrassment? This is obviously NOT a Ron Paul supporter, this is a wannabe Neocon neophyte wanting to swim with the Big Fish. Sad. Why even bother with a convention if it is a rubber stamp for the AIPAC selected and Adelson financed agent for Israel?
What then is the point? The GOP should die of shame for how they have treated Dr Paul, Paulites voting for a true representative of the people of the US instead of the state of Israel is hardly an "embarrassing the party".
What crap!

They better nominate Ron Paul NO MATTER WHAT!!!!

From reading the comments

it is obvious that at this time eleven weeks from now, about 80% of the people on the DP are going to be pretty ticked off at Ron Paul for insisting his delegates not try to nominate him at the convention and conceding to Romney. I wanted him to win too, but, you can't magically turn 550 delegates into.....oh, what's the use! Optimism is great. But, insisting we're going to make it to Mars by 2018 isn't optimism, it's wishful thinking.

Actually, our secret space

Actually, our secret space program has already been to Mars. Really.

So, I'll take optimism. Ron Paul for the WIN!

RON PAUL 2012 * Restore America * Bring The Troops Home

So what if Rombama

"wins" with more delegates than Dr Paul. Dr Paul has his delegates and they can stand PROUD that they voted righteously and did not compromise with sleazy cheaters to make the cheaters look good. The GOP NEEDS to be "embarrassed"!

Sadly, this a major pitfall

Sadly, this a major pitfall of the plan to "takeover the GOP." At every step of the game, opportunists like Mr. Cushman spring up.

If the delegates BETTER nominate RP. If not, what a waste of time. Mitt and GOP need to be embarrassed. Next year don't steamroll the primaries with a candidate with No chance running on an outdated and unconstitutional platform.

We are cleansing the GOP of the ignorant big spenders and anti-gay idiots who are in charge right now. Time to cut the fat.

Perhaps this is a secret plot

Perhaps this is a secret plot to drive all of us to Gary Johnson who is not afraid to "embarrass" Romney. If it is, it is certainly working for me. Just kidding.....sort of.

Can we Moneybomb for all expenses paid for the Delegates who

nominates and seconds the nomination? Is that legal? If it is, then let's do it....they have to do it and THEN we reimburse them.

LibertyUSAPAC will do the delegate bomb. Still working on it!!

If anyone can help, PM me.

I'll donate to the delegate

money bomb. I do not donate to candidates. Done with that.

Keepin' it real.

The campaign is saying Ron

The campaign is saying Ron Paul has 'given up.'

Ron Paul has given up on becoming president, but loyal supporters are promising to promote the libertarian-leaning Texas congressman’s principles at the Republican national convention this summer…

gold = money
war = health of the state
liberty = prosperity

Ron Paul has also said, "This campaign is not about me...

it is about you." I sure as hell haven't given up.

reedr3v's picture

The AP does not speak for the r3VOLution,

nor does Hunter or Benton or Cushman. The grassroots will listen only to Ron Paul himself.

Bet me $10,000

That the news is screwing with us again.

Look at this load of bull. We are not going to Tampa to JUST INFLUENCE POLITCS AND OR THE PLATFORM! WE ARE GOING TO NOMINATE RON PAUL AND WE ARE NOT TAKING NO FOR AN ANSWER! WE ARE TAKING OUR COUNTRY BACK NOW NOW NOW! THERE IS NO LIBERTY TO BE HAD IN THE DISTANT FUTURE! BITE US! WE HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE. We are going down the crapper at a high rate of speed and we need to turn our country around today not tomorrow!

However, in a sentiment that will drive many Paul supporters and potential delegates up the wall:

Cushman said he doesn’t anticipate any attempt to nominate Paul as president instead of Romney – members of the liberty movement simply want to espouse the Paul message.

“The goal is not to embarrass the party,” he said. “The goal is to make the party stronger and broaden the base, and walk the Republican talk.”

This is just one, one of the calmer, signs of a reality the Republican Party and the nation will have to deal with: the people energized by Ron Paul are not going to stop influencing national and local politics just because Ron Paul is gone from the scene. And whether Paul's name is "officially" nominated from the floor will matter less than the attempts to actual Paul's libertarian values in politics (and culture) down the line.

Keepin' it real.

There is PLENTY to lose. You

There is PLENTY to lose. You are just too stupid to see it.

Get replaced by an alternate, and Ron Paul lose. And that IS what will happen.

So vote for Rombama

so as to not embarrass him...for what, exactly? Might as well get replaced by an alternate if you are forced to vote for Rombama.

The convention is not about Influencing a party ..........It is about NOMINATING A MAN FOR PRESIDENT. That is what the delegates are there for and they are not there to do "what they are told to do"! What a laugh .....that remarks for a more unified delegation. The bloody nerve of some people after what delegates and supporters have endured all over the country for months now.

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose!

Go there and vote your conscience on the first vote. We are the ones who tell them what to do ........not "them" telling us!

And if the convention turns into a mess.......so be it....It will be their responsibility not ours.

See...this i where your

See...this i where your ignorance does not help you. You actually think YOU get to decide what he convention is for. And that when you do, it becomes fact?

And this is where your Neoconism

doesn't help you. The convention is to nominate the GOP candidate...at least that is what it is supposed to be and why all of a sudden there is such pressure to go along and not be "embarrassing" by pretending to support an Obama clone. Of course, since Ron Paul only has 200 or so delegates what is the problem? He is the one who will be embarrassed when confronted with the overwhelmingness of Rombamas delegates.....right?
