Uruguay to become first government to SELL cannabis to its citizens

Uruguay could become the first country in the world to sell marijuana to its citizens as it attempts to fight a growing crime problem.

Under the plan, only the government would be allowed to sell marijuana to adults who have registered on a government database - letting officials keep track of their purchases over time.
Minister of Defense Eleuterio Fernandez Huidobro said the measure aims to weaken crime in the country by removing profits from drug dealers and diverting users from harder drugs.

Pretty funny.

In the U.S., the government bans TV commercials promoting tobacco cigarettes and cages people who use or sell marijuana. In Uruguay, I guess the government will be buying TV spots advertising the official marijuana cigarettes?

While government has no legitimate right to sell -- or regulate -- any drug whatsoever, Uruguay's is clearly the "less bad" solution.

Brilliant! On the part of the Government.

I hope the Government is selling it below cost. No better way to destroy an entire market than to eliminate the profit motive.

The United States could eliminate the drug cartel and drug crime in one fell swoop -- nationalize the distribution of narcotics. Sell dope below cost in government licensed pharmacies.

Once businesses start

Once businesses start tracking you for the government, checking your cards, licenses and permits for the government, and paying taxes to the government they are in fact just agents of the government, and not much different than the government selling it to you directly. Sweet deal for the government. They get the profits without taking any of the risk.

Since when should a

Since when should a government sell anything? How about people selling it to other people? That's more like it.

Bad system. Even if you leave

Bad system. Even if you leave the moral aspect out of it. It doesn't work. A lot of people aren't gonna want to register and will still get it illegally and the criminal dealers will exploit the system to hide profits. Of course, one day, they're gonna bust open a scandal where it turns out government officials have been making major bucks by selling unauthorized marijuana to unlicensed marijuana smokers.

But of course this does prevent poor farmers from making a profit by growing it as cashcrop. Funny how that little issue always seems to play in the background.

And it allows the government to control who gets to do what, if any, scientific research on marijuana and it's medical effects. Funny how that one always pops up as well.

The biggest and best argument against regulating drugs is also the simplest: it doesn't work, never has and never will.

Mixed feelings about it...a good precedent, though one would

rely and be controlled by Big Brother Uruguayan Gov for your weed ration?

Other things would go wrong too (i.e. more regulation, etc). Worse would be hope no one in Gov becomes a drug kingpin (or queenpin), or too selfish, corrupt to hoard/steal from the weed coffers for his/her own use..ill-gotten wealth (of the weed kind). ;p

I'd prefer to deal with criminal dealers

than the govt.

Isn't that a distinction without a difference?

yet wilfully ignorant! You know what I meant! :D

I have a standing plea of nolo contendere to being a

My guess is that the government will over regulate

And the black market will continue to thrive. The US will use this to quell any support for the use or sale there of because they will use Uruguay as an example. They will simply leave out that those on the list of users will not be awarded health insurance, benefits of any sort, and so on.

Cannabis is legal now in Uruguay

So the government will control and sell it, Seems like step toward more estatism which is not surprising since the socialists and their communist president took over the country a few years ago. This move is not to be applauded.

actually the US govt give marijauna to people

has for years. There was a news show about it a few years ago with Montel and a guy that regularly receives a can of it.

He's one of like five people

who have federal permission. They grow it at the University of MS and it's dirt weed.

uruguays govt is completely

uruguays govt is completely corrupt and inept.

i was reading other articles that had alot of input from regular citizens there and no one seems to care. its already legal to own and use in that country, the only diff now is the govt wants to open stores to sell. most of the people surveyed said they would rather buy from a street dealer than the govt

Just a changing of hands from one crime syndicate to another, except this one will keep a database of all its customers. I'd rather keep my dealer on speed-dial, thanks.

Let people grow their own for personal use without tracking them if you're so serious about this "problem" Uruguay. Now THAT'S Liberating.

"the measure aims to weaken

"the measure aims to weaken crime in the country by removing profits from drug dealers and diverting users from harder drugs."

there is a FAR easier solution: just decriminalize it!

after all, the goal is to weaken crime and reduce drug lord profits, right...?

Take over the illegal MJ market from the druglords.
....replacing druglords with .gov druglords. Brilliant! What could go wrong?

I find it stupid that people want this, Its not really making it legal its just allowing a government more control...

It should not be legal or illegal, There should be no law at all about this subject.

"It should not be legal or illegal, There should be no law"

...so you're saying it should be legal. That would be the case if there were no law. There doesn't have to be law regarding something for it to be legal, it is by default.

Whether or not the government sells it doesn't matter. What does matter is that it's completely decriminalized--no one can be penalized for producing it or purchasing it. That's the core importance, and where the US unfortunately fails so hard..

Yes, the difference between

Yes, the difference between common law and Napoleonic law I believe. Funny how people look for the government to declare something is legal. Bad habit for the hobbit, since in our system of law everything that is not prohibited is permitted where as in Napoleon's France everything that was not permitted was prohibited. We are sinking into Napoleonic law more all the time in our medicine, our health, our careers, etc.

But read between the lines, please.

By 'taking control' they no longer have to waste police manpower on fighting drugdealers. I recon that's the real aim of the government. Since the debate will now be about 'quality'.

They are not as stupid as we like to think. They know they cannot stop the drug trade. They also know CIA needs it to fund secret operations ;o)

But by doing this they take away billions from the CIA and corrupt politicians....especially in the US and Europe.

I applaud it. Go Uruguay!

being illegal in the first place is a joke. It's the same as making strawberries or raw milk illegal except cannabis can be transformed about 25,000 ways for a multitude of products. RP2012 It's A Plant!!

9/11 was an inside job .....time to get some answers..RP 2012

Actually, it's a vegetable!!! LOL

It and hemp have almost all necessary nutrients needed by humans. People have begun juicing cannabis for a MULTITUDE of treatments related to minor to chronic conditions, some being able to get of pharmaceuticals COMPLETELY!

The exposure to heat is what causes the THC to become psychoactive. So if you're eating it, it is a vegetable. The most important one, in fact.

'Cept, raw milk is illegal

'Cept, raw milk is illegal for commercial distribution in most jurisictions. Likewise, you have to comply with the FDA in order to sell your strawberries commercially. Marijuana is taken one step too far: it's not just illegal to distribute but it's also illegal to grow and to use.

What would you expect from the Government?

Northern lights? Hindu Kush?
