Rand Paul was wrong to vote NO on GMO labeling.
Submitted by freetoroam on Fri, 06/22/2012 - 19:28So, our body is the most valuable property we own. When we consume toxic "food" we are vulnerable to what the food does to our body. If it is tainted or altered it can destroy our body/property. Similar to pollution. We have a right to know what companies are putting into our environment. This effects our property. We don't live in individual bubbles. How can Rand Paul vote NO on GMO labeling? How are we supposed to protect our body/property without any information about the products we are consuming? Has Rand gone full neo-con? Sure this vote helps the corporations that use cheap GMO crops to make their products. It also leaves our population with a dangerous lack of information. Thanks AGAIN Rand.

*Once farmers, communities and states become dependent on GMO seeds and products for revenue, do you really expect the local and state government to jeopardize their economy? You don't think GMO activists have tried for YEARS to educate and work with their local governments. This type of entrapment is part of Monsanto's business model. That's why their seeds are being burned around the world by farmers that know better. If local governments lack the courage to do what's right and protect the safety of the consumer, how can you blame Americans for going to the Feds? Why isn't your anger directed at the failures of the state government?

What have the States done up to now with that right? Nothing?
They are broke. They cannot take-on a monster like Monsanto.
Sounds like an excuse
Sounds like an excuse for upping power levels of the executive branch to me.
What has private airport security done so far? Let planes crash into our towers, that's what! Quick, we need to pass a vast increase of federal power to do something!
Monsanto got to this bill before it go to the floor. They either win if it passes, or they're in the same spot they were in before if it fails (rich and powerful, not unlike winning). There was no way to win on this bill.

The airlines deferred to the Feds. The airlines save that money.
They are broke anyway. They are also not responsible for security.
You say that Monsanto wins if it passes? They would be at a disadvantage if this bill passed.
??
Are you being deliberately obtuse?
MONSANTO RUNS THE FDA
Why is giving the organization Monsanto RUNS more power going to hurt Monsanto?!

No matter WHAT you think on
No matter WHAT you think on this subject itself, isn't quite silly that we're giving Monsanto the power to control the labeling that we intend to be used on them? Note the bill doesn't specifically enforce the labeling, but gives it's "authority" over to individuals at the FDA, the Department that is seeded with Monsanto lawyers and employees(not even a 'conspiracy', it's another revolving door).
If you use any level of logic in the process, it's sheer insanity to trust Big corporations to protect you from big Corporations. This is no different than our loss of "freedoms" to protect us from "terrorists", when we entrusted big government to save us from tyranny.
Re: No matter what you think on
I agree with you, but....
The big corp, as you know (and are already saying) is our government. Seems like a lot of people here don't want to agree with me on this, but, were gonna have a government made up of fallible people, want to believe it or not, like it or not, thus the only alternative we have is to try to make and keep it honest.
But really I do like your take on this. I just can't get aroung that point.

What the? > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MTIwY3_-ks
And in "keeping them honest",
is keeping regulations like this required, or can we actually envision not having regulations, and getting out from under the government's thumb?
Because by removing all the regulatory power, ALL the corruption will disappear all by itself.
If the gov't can't intervene and manipulate the market, then the corporations won't have any reason to bribe them, because the gov't can't give them what they want.
Voila'!
All the problems solved with one fell swoop.
No regulations, no gov't corruption, food companies label as they wish, and consumers decide, less cost and scope of gov't, everybody wins.
Or are we SO dependent on gov't telling us what to do with every step of our lives, that we can't even envision one little baby step toward freedom?
Big Question: Does the government want 80% of us dead?
i.e. Georgia Guide Stones, NWO, Agenda 21, etc.
Depending on how you answer that question will determine the answers to these questions:
1. Does the government want to enslave us before they kill us?
2. Does the government want wars that never end to kill more of us?
3. Are FEMA Camps, drones, and GPS cell phone tracking devices real?
4. Are government-protected vaccine makers producing vaccines that cause developmental abnormalities & learning disabilities at ever increasing rates?
5. Is there a massive coverup ongoing with the Fukushima disaster?
6. Does high fructose corn syrup contain mercury?
7. Does the government want us to know that gold is money?
8. Is the government using HAARP against us, and are Chem-trails poisoning the atmosphere?
9. Does the government wants us to take great care of ourselves, so that we live a longtime or do they want us dead at 65?
10. Does the government want us to make poor food choices by not providing the correct labeling of food ingredients?
Is you answered these questions with a consistent anti-government response, then what do we do in this case of requiring the government to enforce the correct label of all food?
Where's your response...
To my counter-argument re: regulatory capture?
Where is your response to this post?Tell me your answers please.
Just curious about where you stand on these subjects.
I'm not a huge Alex Jones fan...
So I honestly don't buy into this Agenda 21 stuff nor have I read anything about it. It also wouldn't change anything about my arguments anyway.
Wow! You believe that the government is the good guy?
Your answers to all these questions is that the government wants to help us. They are not the bad guys? Wow! That reveals a lot.
In other words, you don't believe that the government wants us dead. Just say it. You believe that everything is fine. I understand your perspective now. This is not the end of the world coming down the tracks. The economy is fine, the world is fine. All is well.
Hear that?
That's the sound of logical discussion crashing to the floor.
It's kind of like a pitiful murmur laced with accusation and blame.
"It's not MY fault my points make no sense!"

The idea here is force the government to do the right thing....
and that is to protect us, just like national defense. As opposed to the "anti-dog-eat-dog rule" in Atlas Shrugged, this is called the "dog-eat-dog rule." Force the government monster to control the private sector monsters by leveling the playing field of correctly labeling their products. Printing every ingredient on the label and whether the origin in bio-synthetic or not will allow people to make an informed decision regarding the food that they eat.
You pro mandatory labelers have yet to address...
The issue of regulatory capture...
"In 2009, President Obama appointed Michael Taylor as a senior adviser for the FDA. Consumer groups protested the appointment because Taylor had formerly served as a vice president for Monsanto, the controversial agricultural multinational at the forefront of genetically modified food. "
"(e) Regulations.--Not later than 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act, the Commissioner of Food and Drugs and the Secretary of Agriculture shall promulgate such regulations as are necessary to carry out this section."
So... how is giving the FDA more power going to fix things when they're already captured by Monsanto. Giving the FDA more power over labeling simply empowers Monsanto more.
Are you going to keep ignoring this?
That is where your side is in error.
It is not the regulated labeling that is the problem here. It is corruption in government. There is nothing wrong with people expecting to know what is in our food supply and to argue otherwise is just ignorance as far as I'm concerned. Just because our government has corrupted itself with someone or some corporation doesn't mean that I or anyone else should lose our basic rights.
In our society it is impossible to raise your own food. You must buy from outside sources and the only way to know if they are selling what you want is if they label and the only way to know if the label is even remotely telling the truth is with regulation.
Re: That is where your side is in error.
My sentiments, exactly.
It's not just "regulatory capture", it's "corrupt government capture" cause out of corrupt gov come corrupt regs.
All EVIL is being done in the guise of "Some people being better than others." Because: Some ainmals are more equal than other animals. -Animal Farm-
What the? > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MTIwY3_-ks
You don't understand regulatory capture...
Once you give the government power that someone will want to capture, it will almost inevitably become captured. That's what you're missing.
The power to control what must be labeled and how, is exactly the sort of power which corporations love to capture for themselves.
Plus, you've yet to address how to fix the corruption. You just think passing more authority off to the FDA will fix things when you haven't fixed the core of the problem which is that the FDA is run by people who were formerly execs at Big Pharma and Monsanto.
I think the whole reason we are here
is because we want to fix our corrupt government. But we can't just throw the baby out with the bathwater. If we lived in a perfect world we would not need these types of regulation but we are nowhere close to a perfect world and people will always be people. The fact that capture is possible at all is a testament to just how corrupt our government is. And that is why we need to focus on changing government and not just give up and bend over for the corporate elite.
Now you still haven't explained how I am suppose to know what I am buying if there is no disclosure of food content or rules regarding label accuracy.
Re:
And that is why we need to focus on changing government and not just give up....
And another MAIN reason why what your saying is 100% TRUE, is because, THIS IS MORE THAN JUST FOOD!
It's just as hard to fix this situation as it is to fix a corrupt gov.
Fix a corrupt government and you've fix more than this one issue.
This doesn't stop at food. Keeps coming back to this same thing.

Let me guess...
Neither of you are even going to attempt to respond to my argument just below...? That's what I thought...
No, the reason that capture happens is...
You keep giving the government power which the corporations wish to capture. Once you stop giving them unconstitutional power corporations want to capture, the corruption will be much less severe. You're just enabling the system to become more corrupt when you keep pushing for more regulations which will be written and enforced by a captured regulatory agency!

>Now you still haven't explained how I am suppose to know what I am buying if there is no disclosure of food content or rules regarding label accuracy.
Yes we have over and over! Buy non-GMO labeled food! Call up the supplier and the manufacturer and ASK! If they LIE to you, then you can take them to court for FRAUD!
There are rules on labeling accuracy! If you are making fraudulent claims then you can be criminally prosecuted for fraud or sued!
Refuse to buy food which isn't labeled and from companies which won't answer your questions about the food!
Oh so you are in favor
of regulation of labels after all. Where is your opposition to regulation? You are only opening a Pandora's box with your argument. You say I am suppose to find out food content by asking companies who don't have to disclose what they are selling. That makes no sense. And with genetically altered produce the very fact that it isn't labeled means that it is being represented falsely because by default a tomato should be a tomato and not some tomato fish. Then you want to put the burden of proof on the poor guy who just raises plane ole every day tomatoes.
"Refuse to buy food which isn't labeled..." What?
Just who is pushing labels here anyway? Look, we need to focus on corrupt government and BAD regulation and I don't see this as bad regulation at all.
Huh?
I never said I was against labeling. I said I was against the government forcing people to label at gunpoint.
Either you're just really ignorant about libertarian ideology or you're trolling me and trying to derail the actual debate.
I don't give a rats arss
about libertarian ideology because it is based on false assumptions. Is your head an echo chamber?
You said: "There are rules on labeling accuracy! If you are making fraudulent claims then you can be criminally prosecuted for fraud or sued!"
So you are for labeling regulation but not for regulating labels or is it the other way around. Or are you saying you are against false advertising but FOR deceptive advertising?
You need to make up your mind. Are you for regulation or not. As for me I am through with you on this subject because you make absolutely no real world sense.
There is good and necessary regulation and there is bad and corrupted regulation. But if you think that removing all regulation will by some miraculous means change the evil of corporations/people then you are sadly mistaken.
And before I go I wanted to ask you to get back to me after you fork out the money to sue Monsanto when they are not regulated and let me know how that works out for you. Or you could form a class action suit which will only enrich the lawyers and still get you nothing.
Good day to you.
If you don't care about libertarian ideology...
and think it is based on "false assumptions", then why are you even here?
Just the answer I would expect
Just the answer I would expect from someone who just lost the argument.
I know I said I was done with it but I cant help it so this is my last say on the subject.
Perhaps you should look at the name of the site. DAILY PAUL not the DAILY LIBERTARIAN. If you want total libertarian views then go talk to Gary Johnson.
But I do appreciate your capitulation on the subject.
Erm
Just so you know, jumping randomly from subject to subject doesn't mean you've won the argument. If you like government interference, feel free to start the Daily Obama.
The rules he refers to all for fraud. Labeling cannot be inaccurate because it destroys the contract between seller and purchaser. Make sense? If I sell you a box of strawberries and say they're blueberries, that's fraud. This is what he's referring to.

Emotionally-oriented arguers
will not respond to logic.
They only understand basic emotions such as fear and pleasure.
Attempting to appeal to the higher functions is impossible.
It comes down to, "Uggh, me scared. Gov't fix!" Uggh!"
