Dang It! Now do I have to feel bad about eating Plants, too? An Omnivore's Dilemma

Scientists Confirm that Plants Talk and Listen To Each Other, Communication Crucial for Survival
When a South African botanist Lyall Watson claimed in 1973 that plants had emotions that could be recorded on a lie detector test, he was dismissed by many in the scientific community.

When a South African botanist Lyall Watson claimed in 1973 that plants had emotions that could be recorded on a lie detector test, he was dismissed by many in the scientific community.

However, new research, published in the journal Trends in Plant Science, has revealed that plants not only respond to sound, but they also communicate to each other by making "clicking" sounds.
plants communicate

Using powerful loudspeakers, researchers at The University of Western Australia were able to hear clicking sounds coming from the roots of corn saplings.

LOL! Lawd have mercy.

The Title of the thread was obviously meant to be sarcastic.

*facepalm* oye veh.

seriously, would an "omnivore," actually 'worry' about eating flora, but not fauna?

psst, the 'punchline' is that an omnivore doesn't worry about what he/she eats. bar rump bump.

no? no takers?

thank you, thank you. I'm here on Friday nights, and two shows every Saturday.

LOL. y'all crack me up.

PS. It was also in reference to a NYT Best seller with the same title, whose author came to an obvious conclusion.

good read, check it out, if you're a hunter, a prepper, a foodie, or simply an epicurean journey(wo)men.

Some plants want you to eat them...

This is only pertinent in the dipersal of seeds. Plant rely on a symbiotic relationship with animals. They supply animals with food in the form of nuts, seeds, and fruits. In return the animals swallow the seeds and return them to ground in fertile pile of poop, lol. That ensures the propagation of future plants. Eating the nuts, seeds, and fruits of the plant doesn't hurt the plant at all.

Obviously this reasoning doesn't hold up across the board for all the plant based foods we eat.

Beethoven can help crops grow more quickly...dontcha know??!!

Plants love classical music. Heard about this from some documentary many, many moons ago.

Wonder what GMO biotech crops love to listen to...must be "PROPAGANDA" speeches from Monsanto.

I had to look it up. It's

This may help you. My

This may help you. My opinion, and I came to this conclusion a long time ago, is that the Purpose of a plant's life is to nourish another life (and procreate). I believe a plant "wants" to be eaten, it's bounties digested, and returned to the earth in feces. I believe this so strongly, that if I get vegetables and they go bad before I can use them, I try really hard to find one portion or a few leaves of it that I can still consume, so its purpose is met, and it continues in the circle of life. I had to think about this a lot when I read something, years ago, about a test that showed grass "screaming" when it was cut.

Oh boy

Oh boy

The plant kingdom is always in a

state of turf wars, both sub terian and above ground. They are alive but if you look at everything at a sub atomic level you can see everything is alive.

Now do you want to live? Well look around at the laws of nature, or the laws of the jungle, EAT or be EATEN. So is the life of a human or an animal or a plant more valuable, the life of an ant vs the life of a cow.

I eat with respect for the lives lost to feed myself, I do not waste or kill for fun.

sovereign

LOL AnCap..

Yeah, God wants us to feel terrible about sustaining our bodies in any way, shape or form! :-P

Kidding of course. I was a long-term vegetarian (9 years) and just last week began eating meat again. I've started following Dr. Mercola's nutrition plan, and so far am feeling great.. Can't wait to see how it is several months down the road when all that gluten is out of my system. The basics are.. gluten-free, avoid allergenic foods like soy (unless fermented & non-GMO), high protein intake, at least 1/3 of food should be raw, minimize sugar intake in all forms, LOTS of veggies (mostly organic).

Even broccoli screams when

Even broccoli screams when you rip it from the ground.

I can see this study being used right now to sponsor legislation to limit the amount of plants humans can eat. Before long we will only be able to eat pasta.

I could never

callously pull off their arms and legs, or eat their offspring like that.
Just look at the heinous mass-murders that happen every fall, as huge swirling cutting machines called "combines" mow across huge fields of innocent wheat plants, cutting them off at the knees in their prime of life, by the billions at a time!
It's more than I can stand.

No more, I say!
Save the plants!

LOL

I shall callously rip those rascals' branch from branch, stem from stem, petals from petals, and roots from roots, with glee! muahahaha!

combine is simply a garnish, don't ya know?

...

Please don't eat me.

If you are worried about plants..

just eat ripe fruits and vegetables off of vines and trees. Then poo in the woods so that your 'replanting' those seeds. Plants are happy, problem solved. I'm gonna continue eating taters and carrots and using the toilet, but you could still eat without 'hurting' any plants.

I AM is all that is. Everything else is malleable.

Well, this has been known for a while!

I am a vegetarian for reasons of compassion for animals, and because of the industrial farming methods that are inhumane and down right cruel.

Now the matter of plants being also aware at some level also bothered me! That left nothing to eat. BUT, most of us eat the fruit of the plant, like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, peas, beans, oranges, apples, bananas, and in most cases do not destroy the plant.

I take lettuce leaves off the same plants all spring, summer, and fall, allowing the plants to keep growing. Star fire is a lettuce that works well using this method. I guess that is how I deal with eating plants; respect and gratitude for their gifts.

In time a more advanced futuristic race of humans may synthesize the nutrients needed, or find a way to draw in our energy from the universe as plants do from the sun.

There are a few in the world right now who do not eat or drink, but appear to draw their energy from the universe; perhaps the next step in evolution?
