Apple’s iOS 6 Includes ‘Government Alerts’

Apple’s eagerly awaited iOS 6 update for iPhones and iPads will include controversial ‘government alerts’ that some fear are part of the federal government’s takeover of communications networks.
“In compliance with the National Alerting Program, the WEA will be coming to Apple devices that will run on the new mobile OS once it arrives this fall. The iOS 6-compatible devices include iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 4G, iPad 2 and the new iPad. This means that users with older iPhone will be able to receive WEA messages once they upgrade their handset to the new mobile software,” reports AMOG.

Last Year, in Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia... the government was flooding user phones with alert messages during the uprisings. Also, because the govt was interlocked with the companies, they were using calling records to find people calling into the US, Europe, Etc. This made it easier for them to pick which houses to raid and who to kill.

Correct. Your phone can be tracked and the microphone can be activated without your even realizing it. If you completely remove your battery, this will disable all functionality but iPhones do not allow battery removal because removable batteries can lead to cell phone fires or explosions if they get wet or are tampered with and Apple prefers to maintain control over that aspect of their products. Maybe invest in a Faraday cage?

As I understand it, government already has plans in place to force telecoms to push out alerts for national and weather emergencies. This is not unique to iOS.

The problem is you can't "completely" opt out
and your phone or ipad has an "always on" connection to a government server. I believe that's how I understand this. Yes there are toggles to turn off the Amber Alert or Weather system but "Presidential Messages" cannot be disabled. If this is handled by your phone carrier rather than some Gov. department, then I suppose it's "less creepy".

No, that's not correct. The cell providers provide cell service, there is no "always on" connection to a "government server" AFAIK. The number of servers required to do such a thing would be mind-boggling and not easy to hide, based on the amount of electricity used alone. On the other hand, there may be reporting requirements that are unknown to us that could conceivably apply to telecoms.

I'm only guessing, but I believe the alert would originate with a government agency, then it would be pushed to the service provider and they would in turn push the message out to users. If I find anything substantial that confirms or denies my assumptions, I'll post it.

You should be more concerned about GPS and cell tower based tracking and triangulation instead of an emergency alert system.

So out of the box iOS 6 is a market failure,
Government alerts can be treated as nothing else but government lies, given that the government has given itself permission to propagandize its citizens.
Now that Jobs is gone the apple is rotting.
