Considerations on a Ron Paul - 3rd party or write-in campaign and the future of the liberty movement.

Fight for Ron Paul to get the nomination! If he doesn't get the nomination then you have to consider your options for how you will vote for in November. When you are making your decision you should be aware of certain facts that effect whether your vote will be counted.

8 states do not allow write-in votes: Arkansas, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Dakota.

See a map that details ballot laws: http://imgur.com/9JvHj

Many states that do allow a write-in vote require that the candidate themselves register as a write-in candidate and be certified for their write-in votes to be counted. To be registered and certified as a third party candidate you must have the required signatures turned in by the dates below or the votes will not be counted and reported. As you can see it is already past that date in some states:

The date for certification will be past in many of those states by the time of the Republican Convention in Tampa. Ron Paul cannot be registering as a write-in candidate if he expects to fight for the nomination in Tampa as this would offend the Republican Party and diminish his chances of securing the nomination. If he is not registered and certified, most states will not count or report write-ins for Ron Paul.

Ron Paul has no intention to run third party or as a write-in candidate if he does not get the nomination and has said that he is retiring if he doesn't get the nomination. In light of the facts laid out here your vote for him would be most likely not be counted or reported if you wanted to send a message by writing him in anyway.

Ron Paul has stated that the R[̲̅ə̲̅٨̲̅٥̲̅٦̲̅]ution goes on with or without him. It is time that we look to the future of the Liberty Movement for November and far into the future. It would be a shame if everything that Ron has helped to build fell apart without Ron leading from the front.

I would like to urge every soldier in the fight for Liberty to take a serious look at Gary Johnson the Libertarian Candidate For President. Ron Paul ran for president in 1988 as the Libertarian Party Candidate and is an honorary Libertarian Party member for life. Gary Johnson is spot-on with 95% of Ron Paul's policies and has executive experience as a popular two term Governor of New Mexico where he vetoed more spending bills than the Governors of all the other states combined. No one can be Ron Paul but Gary Johnson is pretty close and by far the best Liberty Candidate that will be on the ballot in November if Ron Paul doesn't get the nomination in Tampa. In fact, Gary Johnson will be the only candidate besides Obama and the Republican nominee that will be on the ballot in all 50 states!

Ron Paul pioneered the tactic of fighting from the inside and taking over the GOP from within. If Ron does not get the nomination in Tampa no one will know who you vote for on your secret ballot in November. It's not a primary, you will not be asked your party, you will be able to vote for any candidate from whatever party you wish and no one has to know who you personally voted for. We can fight for Liberty within the GOP and we can fight for Liberty from without by helping to grow the Libertarian Party, a party that Ron Paul ran as the Presidential Candidate for in 1988, all at the same time. If Dr. Paul does not get the nomination in November there will be no Liberty Candidate for President running in the GOP. I know I will never vote for Romney and I don't think you will either. You can send a message of Liberty to the GOP and the world that will be counted and reported by voting for the Libertarian Candidate Gary Johnson.

Take a look at Libertarian Candidate Gary Johnson with an open mind and consider if you think that the Liberty Movement throwing their weight behind him in November if Ron Paul does not get the nomination is the best option to advance the Liberty Movement at this time. We have a facebook group dedicated to those who want to know more about Gary Johnson so that you can consider your options for a contingency plan if we do not have a desirable outcome in Tampa. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This is the current status of Gary Johnson / James Gray's ballot access. As you can see they are already going to be on the ballot in most states and are going to beat the deadlines on the rest. They will be on the ballot in all 50 states:
http://www.lp.org/2012-ballot-access

This is an example of an application to be a write-in candidate. You will notice on this application that Ron Paul himself will have to sign this application or write-in votes in Connecticut will not be counted or reported. How many states have the same rules to have write-in votes counted and reported?:
http://www.sots.ct.gov/sots/lib/sots/electionservices/misc/e...

Ron Paul has no intention of running 3rd Party or as a write-in candidate if he does not get the GOP nomination. Listen to Ron Paul's own words on his plans after Tampa if he doesn't get the nomination:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0HCwa0Qp5A&feature=player_de...

Will Ron Paul endorse Gary Johnson if there is not a desirable outcome in Tampa? No one can know for sure but Reason reported last year before Ron Paul decided to run that Ron Paul would "most likely" throw his weight behind Johnson. "I can't imagine endorsing anybody else," he says. Read it at:
http://reason.com/blog/2010/11/04/ron-paul-on-gary-johnson-i...

The Federal Elections Commission reports that Ron Paul got 42,426 votes as a write-in in 2008 while the Libertarian Party candidate got 523,715 votes, more than 10 times as many. More may have voted for Paul but because of the rules they were not counted or reported. Gary Johnson is a much better candidate than the candidate that the Libertarian Party ran in 2008 and will surely get many more votes. Gary will be on the ballot in all 50 states.

Why can't you?

Of course you can. You 'can' vote for anyone you want to vote for. I stopped playing the strategy game with my vote a long time ago - it does not work. How would anyone ever know you believe in Ron Paul's message if you check off *anyone else*?

Whether your vote 'counts' or not as in, if it gets counted... it counts because you have given voice to what you want.

Do whatever you feel you need to do. I vote my conscience and sleep well.

Besides - A LOT can happen between now and Tampa.

After the convention, if Dr.

After the convention, if Dr. Paul doesn't get nominated, I think more people will be open to this idea

I think you position is reasonable...

...you're not asking people to vote for GJ, you're just saying that people should give him a look if RP doesn't get the nomination.

Central Committee Central Comittee Who is on one?

The Libertarian Central Committees are controlled by The Tea Party.

How many people here are on LP central Committees? ZERO

BMWJIM's picture

No they are NOT! Jesus Granger they are Controlled by

the Republican Party. I trusted your knowledge more than any here at the DP.

I know the LP is controlled by the GOP

Been there done that.

I was hoping to get them to think out of their MSM boxes.

Why be on a LP CC with NO power, when you can be on a GOPCC and actually be able to put RP issues and candidates on the ballot?

Presented very well

I became a bit soured when someone wanted to address our grassroots group to ask everyone to 'convert' to Gary Johnson only a day or two after our primary and explained in so many words "it was a good effort, but Ron Paul is old and it's time to move on". I do not believe I even have to say what my answer was. (I swear I was polite though! Probably saved him from some serious abuse as well. lol) I view Johnson as sort of being in the same position Dr. Paul was in 2008. I have nothing against him either. I think his time is still ahead of him. I will say for me personally that after everything I have gone through and sacrificed for 5 years now that I will proudly vote for Dr. Paul on election day in November. If Dr. Paul specifically endorses and asks us to vote for another candidate I will only promise to consider it. Even Dr. Paul cannot stop me from voting for Dr. Paul. I am in this to the end for Dr. Paul. There has never been another option for me. People can laugh or ridicule me all they want and I do not care. That being said, I rule nothing out as to where I go after November. I am also actually doing a couple things to help Johnson get on the ballot in my state. I do believe the republican nominee will win this election no matter who it is this year. Living up to their nickname as 'The Party of Stupid' though they shoved Mitt down everyones throats with a message that he was the only one who could beat El Duce. I still hold out hope that Dr. Paul will be the nominee, but as I said, he is either on the ballot or I write him in.
I appreciate the way you presented your thoughts in your post and thank you for that. I also wish Gary Johnson well and hope he remains in the cause no matter what happens this year. As I said before, I think his prime time is still ahead of him if he stays with the movement. Again, thank-you.

I think the one thing I regret most

about the Ron Paul campaign is that we never made any inroads as a third party. Being GOP is all fine and well, but at the end of the day I am against the GOP with my heart and soul (as long as it is establishment). Actually I am beginning to fear that this country is turning too far right, and becoming too reactionary, rather than forming a more sane third party that looks to unite those shaken off from both sides, which is something Ron Paul has done. I don't think it does this country any good to take over one party of a two party system. It is still a two party system, and that is disfunction no matter what. So though it is good that we are devastating the GOP and have used it as a very powerful megaphone, in some ways we haven't made much progress when it comes to party politics, and perhaps we have fueled the division between right and left. I am beginning to revert to damage control, hoping that this country doesn't lean too far right this election. Because if that were to happen, and we get Romney as our president, you can bet the horrors of the Bush era will return promptly and with a vengeance. Despite Obama's short comings, I don't lose sleep at night with him as president. I just see him as lame and impotent (with the health care decision being a major surprise). To put it another way I don't think anyone is going to get put in FEMA camps under Obama's watch. Romney on the other hand, it would probably be his first act as president.

I thought that in 07-08

And then I went to my central committee meeting and thought OMG RP WAS RIGHT ON. ALL that power ALL THAT POWER held by a very few folks... If Ron Paul Republicans had done central committee rather than Meet ups. we would have won.

A great post.

I will vote.

I will NOT vote Romney.

I will NOT vote 0bombya.

Are you beginning to get the picture?

I ought to have a monument over me when I die. Not for anything I've done, but for the foolishness I've put a stop to!

If Ron does go third party

what are the chances of Johnson leaving the race.
I would hate to see Paul and Johnson split the liberty vote.

Lots of Fair tax people will stick with Gary Johnson.

It's way too late for Dr Paul

It's way too late for Dr Paul to go third party. Just the facts of the life in the political deadline game. He needed to do it back in May at the LP convention in that was his intention.

I doubt Ron will go third party.

Ron has already missed the filing deadline in 7 states and will have missed many more by the time of Tampa. Nothing would hurt Dr. Paul's chances with the GOP in Tampa more than if he was getting on the ballot as a third party candidate at the same time as he was seeking the nomination for their party. Many states have sore loser laws that do not allow someone that competed in a primary in their state to be on the ballot as an independent or for another party. Ron's strategy at this point pretty much has to be all or nothing in Tampa. I can't know what Ron Paul will do but my personal prediction is that he will endorse Gary Johnson. Reason reported last year before Ron Paul decided to run that Ron Paul would "most likely" throw his weight behind Johnson. "I can't imagine endorsing anybody else," he says.
