How do you wake up a Socialist?

This seemed like the best forum to start this question in. So here it is, how do you get through to someone who is totally brainwashed by socialism?

I recently went back home for a weekend (From NY back to CT), and caught up with some friends I don't get to see as often anymore. We just got to catch up and hangout around a fire with some beers. Anyway, at some point one of my friends brings up the topic of obamacare and how he's so pumped about the ruling on the mandate. Of course this leads to an long political discussion in which we just completely disagree with each other (I know we broke the cardinal rule of the 3 things your never talk about in polite company Religion, Politics, and Sex).

He believes that the state/ fed. government should have the power to regulate and monopolize anything pertaining to 'human survival'. He believes everyone should get free electricity, free markets don't work, Our economy is fine, etc. He tends to be the type of person who talks and talks and never stops, so it gets hard to get through to him my points which gets terribly frustrating after awhile as you feel you get nowhere.

In the end I think he was more annoyed and upset with me and the majority of the people there for not accepting socialist ideas, I could have cared less what he truly believes in and I'm not one to get annoyed with others for holding different values from me. I wanted to tell him that how he felt is a perfect example of why socialism and any other collectivist ideas don't work, because you believe in a society where everyone must comply with the rule of a handful of people to so called "benefit" everyone as a whole. Which is the underlying problem; There is no room for the individual, therefore you are always going to sacrifice the interests in which many people want to live their own lives. People will be giving up more freedoms to satisfy the wishes of others, living less meaningful and worthwhile lives. This also only leads to tyranny and more government coercion, and in the end the downfall to that civilization. Unless of course you live in some utopia where everyone wants the same exact things as each other. I wish I said it to him as the thought raced across my mind, but I didn't think it would make him anymore likely to open up to my libertarian philosophy. I didn't want to get into a pissing contest.

So my question to the DP is how do any of you guy's and ladies here break through to some of your best friends whom are so adamantly in support of beliefs contradictory to your own? This by the way is a friend I grew up with, and more astonishing is a History grad! (face palm). I still consider him one of my best friends, but I fear the day will come where if we go on living our lives to the philosophies we believe in that this friendship will be doomed. I just wish I knew of some way to break through to him and show him the light.

I feel your pain!

My brother, sister and several aquaintences have been posessed by this evil spirit. It is a religion, a belief system rooted in the "world" which is power, greed and flesh. Have you ever tried to use 'reason' to pursuade someone they have fallen for a cult? Good luck with that. God has the best advice: Use love. They will not care how much you know until they know how much you care but TRUTH always appears as hate to those who hate the truth.
For what its worth, I think this video is one of the best and least offensive detailed descriptions of collectivism vs individualism: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJqSsrFDiSA

Wishing you well.
Continue your crusade for truth. Satan will do all he can to stop you but God is on the side of truth and freedom

A patriot must always be prepared to defend his country from his government.

maybe a former socialist can help?

Some points to make...

SLAVERY: You work, work, work, live a miserable life and end up with nothing because the Masters take everything.

SOCIALISM: You work, work, work, live a miserable life and end up with nothing because the Government takes everything.

The difference between Socialism and Slavery is that in Slavery, the master wields the whip. In Socialism, the government wields the whip.

"Socialism is a system where the government directly owns and manages businesses. Corporatism is a system where businesses are nominally in private hands, but are in fact controlled by the government. In a corporatist state, government officials often act in collusion with their favored business interests to design polices that give those interests a monopoly position, to the detriment of both competitors and consumers." -- Ron Paul

Corporatism is what we have in the US nowadays, not a free market economy. Not Capitalism, but Crony-Capitalism.

* There is no difference between communism and socialism, except in the means of achieving the same ultimate end: communism proposes to enslave men by force, socialism -- by vote. It is merely the difference between murder and suicide. – Ayn Rand, LA Times

* Socialism is only necessary to keep parasites alive. Marxist politicians believe in it because it gives them power to be corrupt and become rich at the expense of someone else being enslaved.

* The problem of Capitalism is Capitalists. The problem of Socialism is Socialism.

* USSR = Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (RIP)

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Why is it that most Socialist rhetoric usually holds up the failures of Socialism to explain why Socialism is needed.

Most of the time you can't.

It seems you really care about this person. Probably the best thing u can do is to just listen. Don't say anything unless you are directly asked for your input. In most cases praying for them and listening to them is the best approach. But don't spend more time than necessary trying to win your friend over as there are a lot of other friends to be made who are likeminded as well as folks who are open to really listening to what you have to say and are more likely to be won over.

Your friend can observe your life and most likely feels a need to behave the way he did out of insecurity about his own life and positions...the revolution is about reaching out to people who will listen and in many cases choosing to make new friends.

I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war. Ps 120:7
Better to be divided by truth than united in error.
"I am the door." -Jesus Christ
