Americans' Confidence in Television News Drops to All Time Low

Liberals' and moderates' views are now similar to conservatives'

by Lymari Morales | Gallup

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Americans' confidence in television news is at a new low by one percentage point, with 21% of adults expressing a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in it. This marks a decline from 27% last year and from 46% when Gallup started tracking confidence in television news in 1993.

The findings are from Gallup's annual update on confidence in U.S. institutions, conducted June 7-10 this year. As such, the findings preceded the erroneous initial reports by cable-news networks CNN and Fox News regarding the U.S. Supreme Court's June 28 decision about the constitutionality of the U.S. healthcare law.

Among 16 U.S. institutions tested, television news ranks 11th, following newspapers in 10th place. The 25% of adults who express a great deal or quite a lot of confidence in newspapers is down slightly from 28% last year. Confidence in newspapers is now half of what it was at its peak of 51% in 1979.

This year's updates mark a setback from last year for both television news and newspapers, when Americans appeared to be regaining some confidence in these institutions, though they are more in line with 2007-2010 readings

How bad it's gotten

You know the msm are in over their heads when 50% of Americans get their news from word of mouth (the percentage might be higher but I couldn't find anything to back that up) maybe America has a chance if neighbors start communicating with one another. I love coming to the DP after getting assaulted verbally by Romney supporters on various websites. I don't fight them, or even try to convince them, I simply ask them to be civil and have a conversation about the state of our government, and why they think romney is the best choice for change; which strangely enough they want too. We all are after all Republicans, some of them are just mislead or don't care enough to fight the establishment. But for some reason they all have the energy to call me Paulbot,Paultard,Ronbot,Paullock etc. I welcome their insults because if that is the best they can do in defense of their candidates stances we have got this in the bag!

sincerely,
Mike G.

We should all be "occupying

We should all be "occupying news stations" instead of parks and plazas.

And this just in!.. We are getting reports that 9/11 Was a false-flag attack. That Patriot Act has been rescinded, and trials will be underway shortly.

Please stay tuned.

I try to change people every day. Do You?

Well, that means

that 21% of Americans are drooling morons, with the remaining 79% ranging from blithering idiot to reasonably aware(for the ones who don't believe TV at all).

The most aware do not own a TV.

LOL!!

Perfect analysis!!

I own

a TV and have a cable subscription, and consider myself fairly aware.

You of all people should know that they "pre-condition" the public for their agenda through the TV, Film and other forms of media.

There is nothing wrong with monitoring enemy transmissions. It may provide some warning of certain things coming down the pike.

I must admit that I have enjoyed blacking out the MSM "news" outlets lately. Even when they were giving RP limited coverage, it was painful to watch those "presstitutes" going about their business. They are vile creatures. I should have punched Carl Cameron in the face when I had the opportunity in New Orleans.

That is why I have a great deal of respect for people like "Moxy" of Mox News who ingests hours of this poison at a time, just to bring us a couple of snippets on youtube.

Just because one "owns" a TV, doesn't mean they believe everything that comes out of it.

That's a fair point.

But I avoid the contact with the box anyway.
The content goes beyond surface messages, and is far too insidious for my preferences.

Me, too.

No HD, no big screen, no premium channels, just basic cable. Haven't watched anything resembling a news programs since the Judge got cancelled. We avoid the nightly crapfests and relax with reruns of Little House, Columbo, House, Monk, etc., unless there is a good movie on from the 40s or 50s.

“It is the food which you furnish to your mind that determines the whole character of your life.”

and.....

will continue to.

I was a big CNN fan until

I was a big CNN fan until this election cycle. I caught my first RP interview on CNN in 2007. They "introduced" me to him. I haven't watched or read a bit from them since the Iowa Caucus. I get news from RT, from Ben Swann, The Examiner and DP. I read local news online. I'm not much a TV watcher anyway, so the two shows I do enjoy I just record and skip through the b.s. It really is amazing to see the difference between a MSM feed person and an internet one. We the internet folk are so much more informed. It's sad, really. It's sad that we have to do research to find the truth.

Anywho... this girl has zero faith in television news. I don't even trust the weather forecasts they give. :)

Well what did you expect?

they tell us why we shouldn't vote for the guy with the R in front

then they tell us why we shouldn't vote for the Incumbent either.

Then they talk about how the economy is so bad.

Then they talk about why its getting better.

Its seems like they dont really talk a lot of sense anymore.

I still watch a little MSM despite how much I dislike them for how they treated the ONLY candidate who can really save America. All I see are a bunch of rich people sitting behind a desk with some fancy tv's who are COMPLETELY out-of-touch with your average Joe who is more worried about prices going up and having all these bills to pay then some South Carolina funeral home trying to sell Starbucks coffee

His name is Edward Snowden

Don't Believe

I don't believe their crappy polls anymore than I believe their crappy news stations. 21%? Lower I would guess. but then, there are still a lot of dumbed down vaccant minded sheep out there.

skippy

Good

now the common man will be able to post news and communicate with the masses. no big money corporate control of information.

The best things on tv are:

1. So You Think You Can Dance
2. The Simpsons
3. Duck Dynasty

In My Opinion

Best stuff is Two and a Half men BEFORE they got rid of Charlie, Supernatural, Southpark, and Simpsons. All funny and entertaining

skippy

also

Mountain Men, Man Tracker and Moonshiners.

Yes,

did anyone watch Jeopardy in DC? ALL of the pundits they had on were DUMB AS ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These jerks can only read a teleprompter.

If they say it, it's true. If they didn't say it, it didn't

happen.

Yeah, their ratings must really s..k...and we're probably paying for it thru subsides, tax dollars, whether we have TV or not.

"If you want something you've never had before, you have to do something you've never done before." Debra Medina

Even my wife can't stand TV anymore..

She does watch TV but I've noticed she now watches Andy Griffith, Friends, The King of Queens, and Seinfield. She subconsciencly mutes all commericals and is constantly cussing at the box. I suspect it won't be long before she gives up on it all together too.

I used to be a huge nascar fan. I went to college in South Carolina and got to know Larry Pearson who was able to get me into a lot of races back in the late 80's. So, I still turn on the races on the weekends...but the volume is down and all the races suck. There are never any races where the stands are not half empty now days. All the drivers have become corporate whores and it's such a joke watching millionares drive around in circles...but like I said...it was a part of my life for many years and for whatever reason I still watch the $hit on Sundays.

We don't pay for cable where we live...it's part of the rent which also includes our internet.

Once you wake up it's SO OBVIOUS that TV is virtually all propaganda...it's amazing that I never even noticed until about 2007. It took me over 40 years to notice! HOPEFULLY the young people will wake up YEARS before I did.

Cheers,

viewership

Russians have topless female newscasters, perhaps this might boost ratings along with more sports cars lol

The news gets it wrong

so often, and they ignore Ron Paul. People notice that kind of unfair bias and no longer trust what is said in the media.

BTW, OBAMA JUST WROTE AN EXECUTIVE ORDER THAT GIVES THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CONTROL OF COMMUNICATIONS SUCH AS THE MEDIA AND INTERNET, IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY OR TERRORIST THREAT.
http://www.dailypaul.com/243952/obama-gives-himself-control-...

But the USA has been in a state of emergency since 9/11. I guess that means Obama gets to control what the people hear about his birth certificate, and maybe he can even call off, postpone, the election in the fall? Sounds like communist China.

Nope

It's not in case of an emergency. That's just the excuse. There is ALWAYS an excuse to cut into our freedoms. This is more likely so Obamya can start putting out the equivalent to 2 minute Hates. Don't know what I mean? Read 1984!

skippy

Yea, well after the stunts

Yea, well after the stunts they pulled this election season, it shouldnt be a suprise.
I dont think anyone really knows the true and full effects of what has happened in the last several months. It probably wont fully be known until the election after this one.

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

I hope AIRPORTs stop force-feeding constant broadcasting of

noisy silly worthless TV programs.

It's not only the lowering of confidence, but the elevation of the outright unhealthy annoyance & irritation levels that the gallup analysts should be looking into.

Now all they have to do is turn it off

and find something they can believe in - the truth. Guess what, there's this guy running for President ...
