Ex US Commander, McChrystal Calls for Reviving The Draft

WASHINGTON — The former US commander in Afghanistan, Stanley McChrystal, has urged that the draft be reinstated to spread the burden of fighting and to instill a sense of shared civic duty among young Americans.

The country’s all-volunteer force has performed with great skill but after more than a decade of war “we’re running very, very hard and at a certain point you can’t expect it to go forever,” McChrystal said at a conference last month.

Apart from the strain on troops and their families after repeated deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, only a small fraction of the population was affected by the conflicts, the general said.

“It’s less than one percent of Americans touched by this,” he said at the event organized by the Aspen Institute.

Other senior military leaders have voiced concern about a growing gap between the all-volunteer force and the rest of society.

this is a great post. I can

this is a great post.

I can only assume that the downvotes are due to people seeing your title (and possibly username) and assuming that you didn't mean the question rhetorically.

Had they actually read your post, they would have heard several well-argued points about precisely why the draft IS bad.

Agree with most of your post

but your last sentence is not true!
Not at all!

" In Thee O Lord do I put my trust " ~ Psalm 31:1~

technically, don't you mean

technically, don't you mean his second to last sentence?

(unless you're actually taking issue with his NOT blaming of draftees who lamnent their position. ie: you think he should comdemn draftees who don't wanna be there)

I was referring

to the last paragraph, particularly the 1st sentence.
Not a fair statement, not accurate, not true!

" In Thee O Lord do I put my trust " ~ Psalm 31:1~

Miltary history shows otherwise

Because of their initial reluctance due to compulsory service, draftees in combat have a higher learning curve to survive, their morale is lower, and demonstrate poor initiative. Military Elite forces such as Paras, Rangers, Seals, Green Berets, etc. require motivated volunteers. They do not want or need ambivalent draftees watching their backs. Quality, not quantity counts.

Some historical examples:

In the Korea war, drafted US troops fresh from garrison duty in Japan were all but annihilated by the invading North Koreans. Many were bayoneted in their sleeping bags, and some of them could not service their firearms. It took professional career soldiers such as the Marines and former WW2 Army vets to stem the tide.

In Vietnam, many draftees demonstrated poor discipline, were addicted to drugs, and fragged officers and NCO'S. Suicide rate is higher for draftees, who feel trapped in a situation where they can't quit. A career-minded professional soldier is unlikely to do that.

USA is being set up for the draft.

Obama had this on his agenda from day one, and wanted compulsory military training for every youth when he was first elected, like Hitler Youth. Fits right in with all the other fascist executive orders, like controlling communications recently penned?

Remember Rahm Emanuel, Obama's good buddy, and his pet project of compulsory military training?

Nobody will show up

The Government and it's illegal wars have been exposed. The young people that have not "woken up" IMHO actually know what's going on...they just choose not to deal with it right now. Conscription would be so counter to the way most young people have grown up...I seriously doubt there would be many lining up to comply. In fact, like someone else commented...it would probably be the nudge they needed to officially get off their asses and join all of us who have been fighting for peace for all these years.

What would be cool is if the draft was re-instated, instead of people signing up to become killers for the global elite...all the soldiers who are currently serving woiuld lay down their guns and just walk away. Hell, they should do that anyway.

Yes, people will show up because

Obama told all the 18-30 year old Mexicans to come over. They will be fighting his war. Why do you think he used that specific age group?

I will not fight for terrorists

if that happens back to Canada i go, i am anti war and Neo Cons are the only terrorists right now to worry about. USA is the biggest bully in the world that murders people in their countries and occupies their land trying to implement their radical ideology on other people. i will not have any part in that. that murderer war criminal mccrystal should be sent to Iraq and Afghanistan and tried for war crimes.

I'll gladly join the draft,

I'll gladly join the draft, just show me where this war is constitutional.

I have a much better solution.....

End ALL these damned wars now!

I remember Viet Nam VERY well--

and I don't understand how anyone can say that the draft ended the war!!!

It took a good decade, at least, if it worked, and in the meantime how many lives were lost?!

One of us was female (obviously) and not draftable (then); the other of us had a high draft number, but family and friends came home in body bags, and it was a nightmare for those who went over there--

Drafts don't stop wars!!! Lose that idea!!!

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

I was around during Vietnam, also

Had a school deferment and then a high number in the lottery so was one of the lucky ones. While I am NOT in favor of the draft I do believe that it was so unpopular that it led over time to the huge disenchantment with the war, mass marches and protests, and its final winding down. With today's volunteer army the attitude of most people is, well, they signed up for it didn't they? When YOU might just be plucked out of school or the work force the war takes on a WHOLE new meaning.

I remember Vietnam very well also...

I spent nearly two years there with the 3rd Marine Div. in Binh Dinh province...What stood out for me was the famous quote by Mohammed Ali.."I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong...."

"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is argument of tyrants. It is the creed of slaves." William Pitt in the House of Commons November 18, 1783
"I know major allies who fund them" Gen. Dempsey referring to ISIS

glad you made it home, too---

spouse and I both remember the bad treatment the returning soldiers from Viet Nam got, and we never could understand it--

I believe that added to my anger towards the 'establishment' and government and American culture/people at that time and led me to Ron Paul--

We have a very dear friend who experienced this along with PTSD (he was Navy), and he once told us that we were some of the very few people who accepted him--

It's mind boggling; I have friends who are crippled now because of what happened to them over there--

not to mention the ones who didn't have a chance to have families, etc.--

it's hard to be awake; it's easier to dream--

Thanks UndeclaredWars!

Glad you made it home!

I don't know about you but...I hate snakes

These same dispicable, cowardly snakes that steal our money and spend us into never ending debt, think nothing of it as they profit and boast and party with all the new technology dreaming up new wars whereby they can deploy all this stuff.
These snakes, these cowardly murderers want to send your sons and daughters away to some never never land "over there" to be blown up, burnt up, and to die for NOTHING!
I hope some military personnel are reading this blog and think about what they are being used for and the apathy our so called leaders really have about them being sent home in body bags.
It is a grief that the families will NEVER put away!
I know first hand!

Away to hell with ALL of these snakes!

Before we talk of the "revolution" this would cause...

I am highly discouraged by the reaction to this story from my non-libertarian friends, even the ones who have always called me crazy for asking "will you support the wars when there is a draft?" because they were convinced that the draft could never be reinstated. Most of them, today, are saying things along the lines of "good, that is just what the country needs" or "I am in favor of the draft."
The irony, is that I will undoubtedly be the first one to take up arms against any and all enemies who threaten our lives and liberties, even if it meant certain death. I don't think the draft-supporters I have spoken to today would even understand such threats to life and liberty.
Bottom line... we have a LONG way to go.

Unlearning and self-teaching since 2008. Thanks, Dr. Paul!

Typical Government

Instead of ending the wars to lessen the stress... The proposed solution is to increase the participation tax.

The point

The point is that just like with Vietnam, imposing the draft would equate to ending unjustified wars due to the civil unrest. However, this only works for a short time. Once the draft is incorporated into the indoctrination of youth and made compulsory for a long period of time, that dissent gradually disappears (see: Hitler Youth, Compulsory military service in Israel, North Korea, etc.). Eventually, the backs of the people are broken and the wars continue as conscientious objectors attempt to flee the country.

I fear you are right.;

Obama wanted compulsory military training for every youth when he was first elected, like Hitler Youth, and wanted his picture in every classroom like Hitler. Classic signs of fascism and dictatorship.

I wonder

whether after all that decades of political correctness and equality of rights talks there would be a draft for girls too. Q)

it would follow; equal rights for all.

so when the draft comes and i

so when the draft comes and i tell them to f*ck off, i wonder how heart broken they will be hahaha

Maybe that is what all the new

dorms, fema camps, and jails are for, draft dodgers. It is all about control. You will obey...or else?

No I think this will be the cause of much revolution. Finally.

Stanley McChrystal, has urged that the draft be reinstated

They must be desperate getting new volunteers, that means people have figured it out and that's a good thing. In history wars usually end when the money is gone or when you don't have enough troops. Looks like they are running out of troops because the fed can just print the money.

As I write this there is a discussion on TV about the new Time article on the epidemic increase in suicide among the soldiers, titled "One A Day". Not something many young people want to volunteer for. If they do institute a draft, there will be civil unrest like we have not seen since the Vietnam War.

The current generation of military leaders have learned nothing

A study of Vietnam will show that it was the burden of the draft which ended the war. Drafted soldier fighting an unpopular war WILL revolt and many unexpected ways. Fragging officers. Drinking, using drugs. Refusing to fight. Refusing to deploy. Going AWOL.

Wars will end when soldiers refuse to fight.

Watch the documentary "Sir! No Sir!"

I did not know what fragging was

So I Googled it, I knew there were occurrences of the troops killing their own COs, but 1400 mysteriously disappeared and 600 killed by their own soldiers? No wonder the war was brought to an end.

While I detest the draft, there may be some good to it. At least the people will cry out to end the wars.

Are you eligible? Or do you

Are you eligible? Or do you have children, of a draftable, or soon to be, draftable age? My guess is no...or you probably would not make this statement.
