Help me, please.

So I've been trying for months to influence my friends and family to wake up to the futility of the left-right establishment game and support Ron Paul. I've made huge headway, having helped at least 5 people come to support Ron Paul. However, some of my other close family members still take issue with supporting Paul. I can tell I have come far in waking them up to many of the ideas Ron Paul has about liberty such as opposing the NDAA, however they still are hooked on this idea that if I don't support Romney then I don't really care about America because Obama will destroy the country if he has 4 more years.

They admit that they don't really like Romney, and they know that not many people are excited about him, but they say we must beat Obama no matter what. They say they are voting republican, period. Whether it is Romney or Paul is of no consequence to them. Their reasoning is that if Obama is elected, and if a supreme court justice were to resign, he would be able to appoint anyone to the vacant seat. We would then be stuck with whoever he might appoint until they retire. They say if Romney beats Obama then we at least are much more likely to get a conservative supreme court justice since the conservatives can influence his decision. They are also telling me that it has been speculated that there will be three retirees from the court in the next four years, which would make their concerns relevant. I of course am planning on voting for Paul regardless of who wins what nomination because I could never vote for Romney. But they're saying if Romney wins the nomination and I still vote for Paul, that I am part of the problem. They're saying we need to vote Romney just for the supreme court justices.

My question is, how do you argue with that? It seems like a legitimate concern. I know my stuff, but I can't think of a good way to convince them that they're wrong about this. And I don't really know all the facts, specifically regarding whether or not justices will be retiring. Please give me some good responses to this. I want some real meat I can hit them with regarding this.

I'm hearing that same issue -

I received an email pointing out the ages of four of the justices - I'm not convinced that Romney would do any better at selecting replacements.

1. Justice Scalia just turned 78
2. Justice Kennedy will turn 78 later this year
3. Justice Breyer will be 76 in August
4. Justice Ginsburg turned 81 about a week ago.

OBarry term 2 IS dangerous.

You cannot discount that.
People who think only in terms of his relation to congress are overlooking all the things he is doing right now around or in spite of congress. Just how effective has congress been?
People who can see that are strongly motivated to deny him term 2. They believe anyone's first term is better than OBarry2. Unless Mitt falls apart prior to the convention, I doubt you'll sway your relatives, but it doesn't hurt to educate them on who he really is.

Bush Jr. Nominated John

Bush Jr. Nominated John Roberts and he betrayed us. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that the federal gov can mandate the populace buy a product or face a fine. Romney would appoint crap judges. I personally want O to Beat Rom, as long as the R's can win the Senate and hold the House. Gridlock would ensue. Then hopefully nothing too bad happens over the next 4 years and we and our currency all hang on, then we have a GOP Primary shot in 16 with Rand/Judge Nap/Possible newcomer? I can totally see Rom with a Cabinet full of Neo-Cons and bailouts happening left and right. Bad deal there.

Thanks

This is fantastic. I also found out that Romney promised to appoint a justice like Roberts... Im using that approach.

Yep

Ive used this already. They know about the issues, but their argument is that Romney will appoint a more conservative justice.

Try this out, it won't hurt.

Try this out, it won't hurt since they are family and they have nowhere to run. :) If it does not work you have many more opportunities to try a different approach, just remember to keep it fun and consistent.

Step 1: Explain to them how their policies do not differ much and use a YouTube video to help make that point.

Get them to understand.

Step 2: Make them aware that Romney is a flip flopper who's word does not deserve much or any credibility, support that with a YouTube video.

Step 3: Remind them of the definition of insanity possibly provided by Einstein:

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results."

and make it clear to them that by voting for Romney, they will be voting for a known liar who has provided proof that he does not represent the personal and political values Republicans used to defend.

I am sure you will have more to work with once more people respond to this thread.
