DAMASCUS, Syria, July 13 (UPI) -- Syria is moving chemical weapons out of storage, U.S. officials said as Syrian opposition activists said more than 220 people were massacred in a Sunni village.
U.S. officials told The Wall Street Journal they feared Damascus might use the undeclared stockpiles of sarin nerve agent, mustard gas and cyanide against anti-regime rebels or civilians, possibly in an ethnic cleansing campaign.
Other officials said President Bashar Assad might be trying to protect the material from being taken by opponents or to complicate Western efforts to track the weapons. Still others told the newspaper Assad may be hoping a chemical-attack threat could drive Sunni Muslims thought to be sympathetic to the rebels from their homes.
The officials, who wouldn't tell the Journal where the weapons have been moved, said they are most worried about Syria's stockpiles of sarin gas, a deadly and versatile nerve agent classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the United Nations, the newspaper said.
