Harvard Study Finds Fluoride Lowers IQ - Published in Federal Gov't Journal

NEW YORK, July 24, 2012

Harvard University researchers' review of fluoride/brain studies concludes "our results support the possibility of adverse effects of fluoride exposures on children's neurodevelopment." It was published online July 20 in Environmental Health Perspectives, a US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences' journal (1), reports the NYS Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc. (NYSCOF)

"The children in high fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ than those who lived in low fluoride areas," write Choi et al.

Further, the EPA says fluoride is a chemical "with substantial evidence of developmental neurotoxicity."

Fluoride (fluosilicic acid) is added to US water supplies at approximately 1 part per million attempting to reduce tooth decay.

Water was the only fluoride source in the studies reviewed and was based on high water fluoride levels. However, they point out research by Ding (2011) suggested that low water fluoride levels had significant negative associations with children's intelligence.

Choi et al. write, "Although fluoride may cause neurotoxicity in animal models and acute fluoride poisoning causes neurotoxicity in adults, very little is known of its effects on children's neurodevelopment. They recommend more brain/fluoride research on children and at individual-level doses.

"It's senseless to keep subjecting our children to this ongoing fluoridation experiment to satisfy the political agenda of special-interest groups," says attorney Paul Beeber, NYSCOF President. "Even if fluoridation reduced cavities, is tooth health more important than brain health? It's time to put politics aside and stop artificial fluoridation everywhere," says Beeber.

After reviewing fluoride toxicological data, the NRC reported in 2006, "It's apparent that fluorides have the ability to interfere with the functions of the brain."

Choi's team writes, "Fluoride readily crosses the placenta. Fluoride exposure to the developing brain, which is much more susceptible to injury caused by toxicants than is the mature brain, may possibly lead to damage of a permanent nature."

Fluoride accumulates in the body. Even low doses are harmful to babies, the thyroid, kidney patients and heavy water-drinkers. There are even doubts about fluoridation's effectiveness (2). New York City Legislation is pending to stop fluoridation. Many communities have already stopped.

Infant formula when mixed with fluoridated water delivers 100-200 times more fluoride than breastmilk. (3)

More information on fluoride's impact on the brain is here.

Are they are filling up those plastic bottles with hot water?

Lining the beer cans with platic bishpenol A? Medicating the public water supply with fluoride which is really what prozac is derived from? Lowering sperm, testosterome and hypofeminizing girls with the estrogen from plastic is nothing more than birth control. Fluoride is plain and simple a bioweapon. A side effect/toxic biproduct that the makers of bombs and aluminum can sell back instead of disposing of it. Mining the Uranium -isn't fluoride and phosphate at the same strata? Or aren't phosphates a biproduct of uranium? Notice that products brag "no phosphates"? Notice how toxic Tide and other detergents are now? I'd bet the ranch that The Chinese are recycling their toxic waste into our laundry detergents. And the FDA doesn't function at all. Notice the smell reeks when you dry your clothes? It doesn't rinse out. Your kids are laying on sheets and wearing it all day. Oh puke. This fluoride in the water is the biggest scam of the last century. Don't get me started. Please buy a under the sink reverse osmosis system. Add 1/4 teaspoon per quart to alkalinze it. Delicious. Get a plumber to install it. Please start documenting just how much all that plastic water costs you, and the earth is choking on plastic. There's a huge plastic island in the ocean. Please save some glass bottles and use them no matter how stupid it looks to the unenlightened.

please calm down, think rationally, and read/listen to this:

shame on the fluoride fear mongers.

That article is BS

There's no such thing as a healthful level of fluoride, besides none. It also conveniently leaves out the part of where sodium fluoride comes from, and the history of fluoridating the water supply beginning in Europe.

Shame on you for your group

Shame on you for your group think attitude. Why don't you take your flouride pills and be happy without trying to keep the rest of us mass medicated allegedly for the benefit of the dental health of children under 9 years old?

I don't know one way or another about fluoride

but let me ask you this: Why is it appropriate to force-medicate people by putting it in the water supply, even if it is beneficial? Following this logic, we should be putting vitamins in the water supply to reduce problems with malnutrition.

What do you mean calm down?

Like the fluoridated jews in the Nazi concentration camps? They were given fluoride in order to "calm the masses". Just GOOGLE "I G FARBEN". And no one here hysterical. You are talking to informed and educated people here. I challenge anyone to get off the public/corporate water supply. You'll lose the brain fog and be able to recall phone numbers, addresses, after hearing them only once- no matter how old you are. I'm sure I would have not had to work so hard in college if I had known then what I know now. Or- if thats just quackery to you, "Sally Sensation": DRINK UP sister. They sell baby water by the gallon - loaded with it. When you start getting big and slow and sluggish.. go get your thyroid checked - what's left of it anyway. Some schools have fluoride cartridges in the water fountains. Notice SRA standardized testing of children in the 1960's coincided with the fluoridation of our water supply. Cause we can't have too many really smart people running around asking alot of questions. Just ask Charlotte Isberyte.

Fluoride at the levels

Fluoride at the levels commonly found in municipal drinking supplies has never been found to be dangerous. This study is no exception. In fact the control group in this study had level of fluoride comparable to typical municipal supply in the US. People ought to read things before they cite them.

Keep in mind, this does not mean that fluoride is safe. it just has yet to be demonstrated that, at the commonly ingested levels, it is unsafe. dosage is a very crucial factor. And regardless of whether it's safe or not, it does not justify the concept of municipal water supplies. the market ought to be allowed to operate freely, and people should decide what kind of water treatments they want. don't feel the need to demonize fluoride to make this point.

But it has been found to be dangerous

for some people. Fluoride can damage soft tissues (brain, kidneys, and endocrine system), as well as teeth (dental fluorosis) and bones (skeletal fluorosis).

The problem is the dosage, but it can all stem from the water. Processed dry foods that have been prepared with fluoridated water can cause a double dosage when re-hydrated with more fluoridated water. There are now suggestions that drinking more than 8 glasses of water a day is better for you.

A combination of all the wrong things can lead to health issues from fluoride, but it shouldn't be that people need to watch their water intake. It makes more sense to not add it in the first place.

That's why this is news

This study was, by and large, testing levels of F- ions that were under 4 mg/L (which is roughly the same as 4 mg/kg or 4 ppm when fluoride and water are the solute and solvents, respectively.). Also, don't think that F- concentrations in water supplies are a constant 0.5 or 1.0 ppm as reported. Fluoride is added in boli, and will be higher in concentration after a bolus has been added, and then follow an extinction curve until more is added.

This paper is legitimate evidence that fluoride concentrations are inversely associated with average IQ in children. The only thing that I would have done differently than this team is left out the two studies where fluorine was ingested from coal burning residues.

I agree with you that there is not convincing evidence that fluoride is harmful to adults in a neurological sense, although there is good evidence that even at low doses it is problematic for people with kidney problems.

This is an issue that needs to be fought, although you're absolutely right that a privatized system would be better. But, this is a blatantly obvious case of crony capitalism, even if you havent seen enough proof of harm. Let ALCOA sell their refinery waste to people who think their kids can afford to lose a few IQ points, and they can have nice teeth.

ingested fluoride

does not benefit an adult. it only benefits children while their teeth are forming. so, the fact that it doesn't harm adults is kinda moot...it's put in there for the children.

that is a common political ploy, isn't it, "do it for the children" "what about the children"

Seems a mystery. Dumping it must be done at a toxic land fill.

Selling it to toothpaste companies somehow benefits children with no minimum daily requirement for it?

Putting it in rat poison kills rats.

Do you read label on what you give to children?

I suspect there is more to this vile tale.

Search for: “Keep out of reach of children” “contact a poison control center immediately.”

Let us know what you find. Happy trails,

Is that what is wrong with the congress?

Have they been drinking all that Fluoride filled Cool-Aid?

Someone make an easy plan to eliminate fluoride consumption.

Alright someone tell me which bottled waters are safe? Aquafina is just NYC tap I heard. Am I good if I just spit out the toothpaste? Are Britain faucets fluoride filters.

I've been doing this for awhile. I don't feel dumber but I guess I'd be too dumb to know

I distill all our drinking

I distill all our drinking water. Then I add minerals back to it before drinking. I did quite a bit of research to find out whether distillation removed flouride since my municipality started flourodating last year. My research said distillation did remove flouride though I read other sources that disagreed. Regardless, I drink a lot more water now because it tastes so much better after I distill it and remineralize it...and you should see the dirty swamp sewer sludge that is left behind in the distiller- yuk!

fluorine molecule is smaller than water molecule

... making it impossible to filter fluorine, though the larger fluoride salt molecules can be partially removed through reverse-osmosis or activated alumina filters. Fluoridated water runs through the water cycle polluting the entire globe. It's in everything and hard to remove. Green tea plant concentrates fluoride. The only real option is to go after the government as hard as possible in forums, council meeting 3-minute public comments, letters to the editor, call-in comments, and possibly certain types of lawsuits. The government is slow-killing you and it's time to realize you are under attack and attack back jack!

Just focusing on fluoride alone is an incomplete view of a very big problem: The Halogen Deception.

While government-backed iodized ( and completely unhealthy due to no mineral content ) white salt was sold as a public health benefit, in reality Americans are now so severely iodine-deficient that they are experiencing a wide-spectrum of diseases. The government simultaneously phased-in more and more competing halogens: chlorides, fluorides, and bromides. Now these toxins are in everything and due to the iodine-deficiency these harmful halogens are wreaking havoc throughout your body.

Try this sometime.

Tell someone that you think that even though budgets are tight, we should pay for aluminum manufacturers for their industrial waste, so that we can put it in the city drinking water. Even though of 27 studies done on this waste product, 26 have shown that children with higher exposure to this waste product show lower intelligence test scores compared to those with lower exposure. It doesn't matter, it's good for the aluminum manufacturers. ALCOA's shareholders need a break, don't they?

Very few people seem to recognize that the fluoride provided to local utility services is a byproduct from aluminum refining. If they're a decent human, they should object to your proposal.

Then inform them that they are against fluoridation of public water.

If they don't believe you, your city probably admits that it gets its fluoride from aluminum refiners. Mine does:

While I am against fluoride

While I am against fluoride in our drinking water I thought the following article was an interesting argument regarding this study:

Just because it supports our view does not make it true.

We have now sunk to a depth at which restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men.
-George Orwell

With all due respect

The "debunker" at Cracked did a pretty crappy job. If you click on the little (1) link in the Reuters article, you'll find a link where you can download the paper "Developmental Fluoride Neurotoxicity: A systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" by Anna L. Choi, Guifan Sun, Ying Zhang, and Phillipe Grandjean.

This study pooled results from 27 studies, 2 of which were from Iran, 25 of which were from China. In 2 of the Chinese studies, subjects were exposed to fluoride via coal burning, and in almost all the others, the fluoride came through drinking water as an additive. Not through industrial runoff, like this David Wong joker claims. He argues that they were testing "megadoses" of fluoride in the high-exposure groups, and this is just wrong. Here are the supposedly high concentrations of fluoride that were being tested, in mg/L (p.27 of Choi et al.): 4.55, 0.88, 2.1-7.6, 1.8, 2.97, 1.81-2.69, 2-11, 4.12, 2, 3.15, 2.9 ,2.97 ,4.5 ,3.8-11.5, 2.34, 2.47 and 2.38. For reference, the EPA's "safe" upper limit is 4 mg/L and the city I live in has 1.0 mg/L. These are not "megadoses".

He then goes on to argue that this report was forwarded to Reuters by an anti-fluoride activist group, with the implication that anything they say must be wrong. Then he finishes up with a logical fallacy, which is that because some people that he disagrees with thought fluoride was a communist mind control plot, that therefore this report about how fluoride adversely effects the developing mind is also not worth paying attention to.

It is a classic case of coming up with reasons to support a position that one already holds, rather than letting reasons dictate the position.

Anyone know of a fluoride filter without a sink tap hookup?

Is there anything like a Brita-styled filter that handles for fluoride? Needing to hook it up to my sink sounds like a hassle, and I have no guarantee my sink fixture is compatible.

No, you need that membrane from the R/O system.

You might google Watt's R O system and california standards for removing fluoide. NSF #'s. Do know that the water has no trace minerals afterwards so get your minerals through food and supplements.

This might help you out

Read down the page, some people have some great tips

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience"—Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

PRNewswire is not news.

It's a paid-for promotion.

The study did not conclude that fluoride lowers IQ. The headline is a lie.

Yes the children in low flouride areas had lower IQ but these were also places where poor places where children were undernourished and low education, like India.

The comparison groups were also from rural China and Iran.

It's not like they were comparing rural Asian kids to suburban American kids.

From the conclusion of the cited article:
"The results support the possibility of an adverse effect of high fluoride exposure on children's neurodevelopment."

The people who forwarded these results to Reuters have an agenda. So what? That doesn't disqualify all of their sources.

Another thing fluoride does

is affect the Pineal Gland, also known as the "third eye". The soft tissue of the adult pineal gland contains more fluoride than any other soft tissue in the body. For some reason it's like a magnet to fluoride.

There's not a lot known about the gland besides regulating melatonin, but some spiritual traditions see it as the gate that leads to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness.

As we get older and are repeatedly exposed to fluoride, the gland accumulates more of the toxin and becomes calcified and hard. I believe that's why older people have more trouble sleeping since a fluoridated pineal gland doesn't produce as much melatonin, which is the hormone that makes us sleep.

If it interrupts melatonin production, think what kind of spiritual experiences it could be suppressing. Most of us living in the US have been exposed to this poison all our lives... makes you wonder.

I find it interesting that much of Europe has banned putting it in their water supplies, as does Mexico, but they get around this by dumping it in their salt! Nobody drinks the tap water in Mexico, but everyone consumes salt.

Why are so many countries obsessed with healthy teeth? The most glaring thing about it is that there is no study that proves ingesting fluoride actually helps fight cavities.

suppressing your spirit

...That's what government is all about

Re.Fluoride...It can't be dumped into the ocean or rivers because it is considered toxic waste yet they can put it into our drinking water.I have read many stories through the years on how it was used to keep the people docile and or controlled of those who were in concentration camps. Our Government knows what it does and the reason why they add it to so many products. They add it to the drinking water and you have no say so over it.

Do they have much credibility in these types of studies?
