Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

But I can't drink raw cows milk ?

This just goes to show the insanity of it all.

i'm afraid the insanity is going to be racheted up..

Things will get much worse before they get better..

While I am ok with the no

While I am ok with the no free formula for most cases, having it under lock and key and regulated like a drug is just rediculous.

Next thing you know, he will be regulating milk amounts that babies can drink from their mother.

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

Virginia, that's probably next on their agenda

Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Will Bloomberg put a limit on the size of breasts

that can be used to feed infants?

Michael Bloomberg Was Obviously Not Breast-Fed...

Bloomberg's mothers breasts couldn't provide milk for poor ole Michael, so his brain and consequently, his thought processes were altered..

Its about The "Force of Government" Not Baby Formula

The issue isn't weather its better to breast feed your baby. It is about the governments control of your decision making..

Government is not eloquent nor reason. Government is force and like fire is a fearful master. ~ Geo Washington

It is my opinion that

if a mother can breast feed, she ought to breast feed. If she can deliver the child naturally, she ought to do it naturally. Breast feeding has more benefits than formula, and it also gives the child a better immune system. Also, say my mother gave birth to a girl by cesarean, and her daughter had a kid 20 + years later also by cesarean, there is a good chance that the grand kid will not be physically able to deliver her child naturally. The pelvis will evolve to be narrower like a male's pelvis and then women won't have a choice on how to deliver.

WOW! Hermaphroditic evolution

WOW! Hermaphroditic evolution in 3 generations! I'll have to disagree. If a pelvis is narrow it is because of genes, not a physical altercation. If it was the latter, all females would have holes in their ears for earrings. The only way you can prevent a person from having a narrow pelvis who is predisposed to it is to throw the infant of a bridge into a river, who knows maybe it'll evolve gills too.

This I don't mind to hear.

This I don't mind to hear. Formula is BS and only causes more health issues for people and costs people more money in the long run.

Look, the government is in your health care, as long as they are then they need to think proactively--there's nothing more proactive than forcing kids to suck the teet!

Breast milk = Sucking on the teet for health.

Formula = Sucking on the tax payer for health.

Which is cheaper?

I think he's taking it a little too far.

While I agree that more mothers should be encouraged to breastfeed, I also believe that they have the right to choose how to feed their newborns. Hospitals (at least in my experience) are often too quick to force formula on you. I made it very clear that I wanted to breastfeed, but the nursery staff gave my kids formula without my consent. Once a baby gets formula, there is usually no going back.

It appears to be a completely

voluntary program. Though given Heir Bloombergs tendencies there is likely coercian involved. I did love the comment "Large Breasted women will only be permitted to dispense milk in 16oz increments".

Formula Sux!

:)

Yup.
