Reacting to the shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, Maryland first lady Katie O’Malley told The Daily Caller that she does not “understand why somebody needs an AK-47″ or an “arsenal,” but stopped short of calling for President Barack Obama to push Congress on enacting gun control laws.

“We need to learn more about that [the incident], but, again, you know, this access to weapons and the hate that some people have and just the combination of those two things are really what make these tragedies like the one [Sunday], as well as the one that happened in Colorado, something that we need, on a national level, to start talking about and start reviewing what we’re doing and how we are making these guns so accessible,” she told TheDC at the U.S. Department of Education’s Bullying Prevent Summit on Monday. “I certainly agree that people are the ones pulling the triggers, but why are we making it so easy for people to get these weapons?”

The shooter, Wade Michael Page, had reportedly been on federal investigators radar before the incident. The shooting resulted in the deaths of seven people, including Page.

“I don’t know why anybody needs an AK-47. I certainly do appreciate hunters and their sporting reasons for having weapons, and I appreciate people who want to have weapons for their safety. … I don’t understand why somebody needs an AK-47 or why somebody needs to have an arsenal. I don’t understand why we can’t get a better control of that as a country,” she said.

I have a question for her

Why does anybody need a motorcycle that goes 160 MPH? So why does MD. continue to license them, allow them on the streets despite the number of fatalities?

My Question For Her is

Why does your security team train with and use assault rifles to protect you?

The answer: Assault rifles exist and will always exist. As long as they do bad people will gain access to them (no matter how many laws you pass.) It may be in a person own self interest to own a assault rifle to meet or exceed the force a person might use to hurt you.

If you dont like AK47 or assault rifles than make your own security team get rid of theirs and lead by example.

I would pose the following, to ALL public SERVANTS:

1. As employees of the citizenry, just WTF makes you delude your 'lives are worth more' or that you're so much more important than your own employers, We the American People, that you need a 24/7 your-employer-funded/subsidized security detail/bodyguards and an army of private Praetorian Guards, aka the State Troopers and the State National Guardsmen?

2. If y'all delude that 33rd Glock magazines, 30rd AK and AR magazines, 100rd Beta C-Mags, and full-auto/select-fire AND semi-auto AR15's & AK patterned rifles/carbines "should be strictly limited for warfare," if public servants haven't declared war against the citizenry, their own bosses, then why the F' does a local county/regional/metro SWAT team need what the US military deploys against its 'enemies' overseas, too??

3. To anyone who knows anything about firearms and battle tactics and/or strategy, you only use full-auto/select-fire machineguns to lay down suppressive fire, or to redirect your enemies toward a death funnel so you can ambush your 'enemies,' or to 'clear' a room/space, when you KNOW you can care less who lives or dies within that 'free-fire zone,'... in war.

So, just WTF does "law enforcement" need to lay down suppressive fire, when even in the currently fraudulent 'judicial' paradigm, the operative motto for anyone both govt and private citizen when deploying firearms is: "Every round that leaves the muzzle of your gun has a lawsuit attached to it!" ??

You have far more control, accuracy, and reliability with semi-auto, than with full-auto/select fire setup.

Plus, for any practical sustained firefight, get a set of Geissele trigger, or practice smart on ANY trigger and trigger reset be it on stock Mil-spec or match grade, you can get 'combat-effective'-fast enough (400~500rd/min vs. the typical 600~900rd/min with full-autos), anyway.

Also, counter-intuitive reality is that while semi-auto sears are technically slightly more difficult to make/manufacture (though, completely negligible variance by modern manufacturing standards) and often require more parts than select-fire/full auto, because of heat/higher pressure, not to mention the obvious, the barrel sustaining more stress with more bullets being fired through it faster in a shorter period of time under full-auto/select fire vs. semi-auto, thus wearing out your weapon's components and repeated shocks/recoils wear out your receiver faster, too: full-auto/select-fire machineguns that civilian SWAT use, in fact, increase the likelihood of more mechanical failures.

So, if as the rabid gun-grabbers argue, that "you only need 'high-capacity' magazines for war," again, the question is, just WTF does CIVILIAN "law enforcement" need them?

Also, despite the modern bastardization by statists, the legal definition under Common Law still states that ANYONE NOT MILITARY = "civilian," which includes every single politician/public servant, teacher, cop, firefighter, etc.

Of course, the bastardization of the term isn't an accident.

There has NEVER been a platoon sized drug cartel waging war here within CONUS, in a tactical or organized manner with equal force parity, for the cops to 'feel' overwhelmed, as the CIA/DoD has instigated via their own former Ft. Benning School of Americas students, aka. the Mexican Special Forces-founded Los Zetas, down in Mexico:

The origins of Los Zetas date back to 1999, when commandos of the Mexican Army's elite forces deserted their ranks and decided to work as the armed wing of the Gulf Cartel, a powerful drug trafficking organization.[8] In February 2010, Los Zetas broke away from their former employer and formed their own criminal organization.[9][10]

Due to their military background, Los Zetas are well armed, highly organized and equipped;[8] their brutal tactics, which include beheadings, torture and indiscriminate slaughter, show that they often prefer brutality over bribery.[8]

Not to say that such militant response from the non-governmental criminal entities can't or won't happen, but for anyone who has been following the steady DoD/DHS grants for surplus as well as newer military gear knows all too well, they just want toys, and deploy SWAT more often now, for everything and anything, simply as an excuse to use those weapons in the all too childish 'hey, we got them, might as well use them' and 'how else will our SWAT gain 'realworld'-experience unless we deploy them?' -- which simply translates into the innocent citizenry being used for murderous live-fire target practice.

Once the arrogant statist ne'er do wells can answer those questions, and are smart enough to know that when I show them a picture of a Volkswagon Golf, that it's NOT an "assault weapon," though obviously it CAN be used to "assault" anyone, or I point to a Vespa Scooter parked on the sidewalk, that idiot liberals and RINOs like Brillo O'Really?? don't confuse it with an AK47, then they can chime in.

Reminds me

This reminds me of a argument I had with a guy on Facebook, who simply couldn't fathom the idea of why anyone would need, in his own words, "a semi-automatic assault rifle with a 1000 round clip". After berating him for incorrect terminology (semi-auto weapons aren't true assault rifles, and they use magazines not clips)and the pure absurdity of his statement, it's now ever more clear to me that people wanting to control firearms often know next to nothing about them! (kind of like the senator that wanted to ban barrel shrouds, but couldn't explain what they were!)

Oh, no.

It irritates me to no end when people confuse magazines and clips. XD But yeah, that's the truth. I have a funny picture relating to that, if I can figure out how to post it.

You can't expect much more intelligence from the Feds though. I've read somewhere before that there's been attempts to restrict weapons like the SKS (which commonly gets called an assault weapon even though it's a semi-auto carbine) and even the venerable M1 Garand. It both amuses and sickens me how some are so ignorant, but it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone anymore :/

Here is why everybody needs an AK-47

The answer was given over 200 years ago by one of the most respected individuals in the American History - Thomas Jefferson:

"No free man shall EVER be debarred the use of arms."

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

Plain and simple. Constitutional also.

Well the police have the AK-47 or something similiar

as does the military who are now patroling US streets and highways...hhmmmm Maybe Mrs O'Malley should start a petition to eliminate all those weapons first then worry about those in the hands of private people. Sounds like a plan to me.

Just one last kick in the nuts, then a final deathblow

She apparently doesn't realize...

...that selective-fire weapons are almost impossible to obtain. The "AK-47" that the average citizen will grab is actually a semi-automatic AKM. I just call them AKs or Kalashnikovs. Calling one an AK-47 is like calling an AR-15 an M-16.

Funny that she would choose the AK as her target, since it's the next weapon I plan on purchasing. They're great for the average citizen, since they're more affordable than fancier rifles, can also be used to hunt medium game, and will happily eat up cheap Russian surplus ammo. The 5.56mm used in AR-15s is about twice as expensive, and 7.62 NATO is four times as much, not to mention the cost of the battle rifle that fires it.

Sounds like Commie propoganda, but the AK really is a "people's rifle."

Medium Game?

That's a BIG bullet and there's not an Elk in the West that won't be dropped by it.

Wha? .....hey....who stole my country?

If you're a really good shot, maybe.

But the 7.62x39 is closer to a slightly less powerful .30-30, not what I'd consider humane to use on elk. That honor is reserved to 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester and 7.62X54R in battle rifles.

Another affordable rifle is the Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport. AK price for an AR-15. I've heard it's quite reliable.

Whenever someone brings up the "don't need an "assault" rifle" argument, I just say, "Yes, it's for killing people. Sadly, we NEED that deterrent." I also point out that the Continental forces didn't defeat the Redcoats with harsh language, they shot them.

Sorry...didn't know we were talking about...

humane treatment...I was thinking of eating...still the 7.62 X 39 is a BIG bullet in my book...wouldn't want to be on the receivng end.

Wha? .....hey....who stole my country?

I don't know why any citizens need an official

"First Lady."

I don't know why anyone should care what a "first lady" says

except her husband.

I thought you could only buy an AK that was semi automatic? In order to get fully auto(at least in Maryland) you would need to spend about 30K on licensing and tools. An AK is a nice accurate semi automatic rifle that is affordable and can be pumped with crappy ammo, such as TulAmmo.

I get into arguments with idiots in Maryland all the time about "why do you need a high capacity mag" or "why do you need a semi automatic pistol, thats not used for sport". I look them dead in the eye when they ask why I think its necessary for myself or anyone else to own such a weapon and say "it is the last resort against a tyrannical government". Surprisingly, I don't get the "your crazy" response. I usually end up quoting TJ a few a times and discussing the reason for the 2nd amendment. I don't know if the libs are going off and talking smack or not when I am finished discussing this, but who cares. If they hear the truth enough, maybe their attitude will change.

This is poo poo

Whoever is telling these democrats what to say aren't very smart. An AK-47 is a soviet made fully automatic assault rifle, not an AR-15, the weapon that the "shooter" used in Aurora.

When they say "AK-47" it's almost always used in a generalized way much like the term "assualt rifle" and "machine gun" is used, it's intended to invoke certain images in the average readers mind. It would be like calling a bolt action hunting rifle a "sniper rifle", theres no mistake about it, they want you to visualize a sniper rifle.
