Politico: Libertarianism is becoming a Winning Strategy

Ron Paul and the Tea Party Playbook

By DAVID KIRBY | 8/10/12 4:24 AM EDT

The Republican National Convention this week announced speaking slots for libertarian Rep. Rand Paul and social conservative Rick Santorum. Both claim the “tea party” brand. However the 2012 primary season reveals that the tea party playbook is more Paul than Santorum.

Conventional political wisdom for at least two decades has held that Republican primaries are won by emphasizing values issues to placate socially conservative voters. Observers point to Santorum’s strong showing in the presidential primaries. Exit polls, however, reveal Santorum never won a majority of the tea party vote in any primary.

The tea party playbook is more Paul than Santorum: Libertarianism is becoming a winning strategy for candidates of a major party.

Santorum is a tumor.

Just because something grows on the body and is noticeable doesn't mean it is good.

Romney is better than Santorum, but thats like saying multiple sclerosis is better than a fast growing melanoma - hardly an endorsement.

I agree with this story 100%.

I am only surprised it is taking so long for people to get this.

Proof !

Many would like to call themselves 'tea party' but only few qualify.

I am surprised it was someone from FW who recognized that you supporters are the ones that started it all in 2007...

And, the 'tea party' will have a HUGE presence in TAMPA.

That Rand Paul sure has no idea what he is doing

(sarcasm intended). What do the naysayers and doubters, and trolls have to say now about how Rand Paul is doing? Hopefully this finally exhonerates him for you, so we can move forward and let Rand do his job and we do ours.

The R3volution requires action, not observation!!!!

More like Ron > Rand > typicals

That doesn't mean I'd trust Rand or that Id vote for him if you cheerleaders get your way.
A revolution guided by Rand's philosophy and tactics is not for me nor many others who align with Ron's. Luckily the cheerleaders who keep foolishly bringing up this issue haven't had their way yet.

Santorum claims "tea party" brand (?)

People within the tea party hold different views on social issues. Some feel strongly one way or the other; some are ambivalent. It's true that, for many in the tea party, when push came to shove, social issues trumped small government/fiscal issues - drawing them to Santorum for his hard-line anti-abortion stance and imo perhaps wanting to support a fellow Catholic. But, nationally, those people are NOT the majority within the tea party - or Santorum would have done a lot better. That he claims to represent the tea party is laughable.

"Left-leaning pundits are anxious to dismiss the tea party as the same old religious right. But the evidence shows they are wrong. Functionally libertarian candidates who focus on fiscal, not social, issues increasingly unite the tea party in primaries and then win general election voters concerned about the economy."

Agreed

Although many are pro-life, it was not an original issue over which we threw tea in the harbors in 2007.

It is certainly not a religious movement as the left would accuse us of being, and Santorum was never deemed tea party by us in NH...

It is more about the Constitution in general than anything else.
