To President Obama: The 2nd Amendment is about fighting tyranny, not hunting deer

Soon after the Denver shootings, President Obama said it was time to put stricter gun-control measures in place. With the failure of Attorney General Holder’s “Fast and Furious” ploy to void the 2nd Amendment, it seems Obama thought he might capitalize on the Denver shootings to further damage the Constitution. The negative public reaction to his words, however, sent Obama backtracking, and senior Democrats like Senator Reid and Representative Pelosi quickly made public remarks to bury the issue — for now.

Before moving on, it is worth noting that Obama said gun laws must be changed but only in a way that protected Americans’ cherished tradition of hunting. Well, hunting game is not the central concern of the 2nd Amendment. What is central is that the 2nd Amendment protects the right of Americans to be armed in case they decide there is a need, in Jefferson’s words, “to alter or to abolish [the government]” and “to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

What if a US citizen or resident acquired a nuclear bomb? Would the government be allowed to take it away? Or would he be able to keep it on claims of "it is a class of 'arms', I can keep it".

I've said this before.

My take is, "the right to keep and bear arms" means any man-portable weapon system, which means *every* rifle in existence, as well as machine guns, submachine guns, and other weapons up to and including rocket and grenade launchers. In fact, at the beginning of the Revolution, the citizens of Massachusetts (so different from today!) were not only armed with muskets, they were also collectively armed with CANNONS.

Heck, you can legally buy older model TANKS today for a decent-sized wad of money. An Abrams it ain't, but an M60 or a Stuart can still lay a hurtin' on just about anything. I personally think that the states should reinstate and re-arm their militias, complete with aircraft and armored vehicles.

A nuke, on the other hand, should not even be possessed by governments. Their very existence is an abomination, and they can't be used without murdering thousands or millions of noncombatants. Same goes for things like nerve gas.

Were it written today, the second amendment's intial phrasing would be read as a qualifier.

Looking at the articles of confederation and the notes of numerous founders, here is what I see:

1) The idea that guns are important for self-defense
2) The idea that guns are important for hunting and recreation
3) The idea that the federal government, which would have control over state militias, should not be allowed to disarm them as the Brits did
4) The idea that state militias should be well-regulated and well-equipped.
5) The idea that guns are important to defend states from the tyranny of the federal government.

Along with the 14th amendment, there is the idea that a government can take away the right to bear arms with due process.

The argument has always been made that the Constitution fully empowers Congress in matters of national defense, and in surpressing rebellions. Therefore, since licensing and registration is no real impediment to gun ownership but can help immensely in national defense, it is allowed.

The great irony:

Take a common hunting rifle, say, a .308 caliber Remington 700 bolt-action rifle. Nothing suspicious at all about it.

It is also one of the most feared classes of weapon on the planet, short of a freaking cruise missile. Nothing scares the pants off of professional militaries the world over more than the thought that their officers could just DIE with no warning whatsoever. We're talking 800+ yard range in the hands of a good shot, and the .308/7.62 NATO is a common military round, as well. When you factor in the common combination of woods/fields/urban environments commonly found in the U.S., the "hunting rifle" becomes an object of sheer, pants-wetting terror. You can't return fire on a target you can't even see.

By the way...

$120 for a Mosin-Nagant, probably two or three hundred more to have it gunsmithed to fit an old-style Soviet sniper scope. Or, you could just remove the rear sight and fix a long-eye relief pistol scope to it instead. Instant medium-range sniper for two hundred bucks.

Kind of funny that this is here at this moment.

We have another thread on the DHS buying up hunting rounds (other rounds as well) at the same time he puts out "I want to protect your hunting traditions" garbage. It's the ongoing practice of hypocritical policies and political leaders.. They say one thing while knowing they're implementing the exact opposite.

So my guess is they'll be setting up more gun control across the board. Hunting traditions be damned will be the next gun control controversy.

What do you do when those in power know they have control and no longer care and cannot be persuaded to listen to the people anymore.

Do we continue to cover our heads while they beat us and hope they'll tire out?

a true patriot, Michael Scheuer. As I read this article I was saddened to recall that many "Americans" chose not to fight the British and did in fact assist them...It will happen here too. We will be a country divided but, the colonist won out even though the vast majority did not participate. Numbers vary but, approximately 5% of Patriots took up arms against the British. People are sheeple. Most are followers. They lay back and watch or cower as they are led away...Some, when they see that others will stand and fight will eventually join their fellows. Our government is out of

Our government is out of control. Unfortunately nobody knows exactly what level of tyranny it will take to make the masses wake up. And by masses i mean the average laymen who are utterly and perfectly content with the preoccupation with any one of the myriad of entertainment sources. I fear that it may already be way too late as the govt is already way too big and militarily too capable along with the recent laws to legally allow it to suppress us against our will.

Im thinking guerilla tactics now.

I for one have held this view my entire life and can't believe that the populace of these united states have become such sissies as to allow these abuses to continue.
I am now what might be considered an old man. And I will say now that old age is not for sissies. But one thing it does is afford a person the relaxed state of mind that if he has to climb his old butt out and go to battle, his days are numbered anyway. With little left to lose, one thing you don't want to do is mess with an old man. He has the wisdom and cunning of the years and doesn't wish to make it a long and hard fought battle. So he will finish it quickly and precisely one way or other.
