2 Sheriffs shot in LA - "Assault weapon"?

Notice the use of term "assault weapon" in this article...you military folks correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't an assault weapon one that has a switch on it for firing fully-automatic? The AR or AK that we can buy in any gunstore...or WalMart for that matter...is a semi-automatic sport rifle, nothing more.

Sad that the officers were murdered, but the media is spinning this into a propaganda piece. I guess the lesson here is, get'm while you can!

Correct the title...

unless I read the article wrong, no sheriffs were shot.

Read it wrong or read the wrong article?

First paragraph in the article:

"Two St. John the Baptist Parish sheriff's deputies were killed and two other deputies were injured in a pair of shootouts early Thursday morning in LaPlace. St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre, in an emotional news conference shortly after 9 a.m., identified the slain officers as Brandon Nielsen, 34, and Jeremy Triche, 27. The injured officers are Michael Scott Boyington, 33, and Jason Triche, 30, Tregre said."

Exactly!

Those are deputies not the sheriff. Seriously, if an elected official gets shot it would be a much bigger deal.

First off, deep sympathies to the victims and their families

but you are correct, media loves calling civilian sport rifles "assault rifles". Any more than one firearm or round of ammo is a "stockpiled arsenal" and your house just became an "armed compound".

There is nothing strange about having a bar of soap in your right pocket, it's just what's happening.

in my opinion

"assault weapon" is so vague it shouldn't even be used. ANY gun can be an assault weapon if used to assault. Same with knifes, rocks, or bare fists. It is just a word thrown around to sensationalize new stories.
