'Paul Ryan Is the Embodiment of the Machine Our Music Rages Against'

Last week, Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan, the Republican architect of Congress's radical right-wing budget plan, as his running mate. Ryan has previously cited Rage Against the Machine as one of his favorite bands. Rage guitarist Tom Morello responds in this exclusive op-ed.

Paul Ryan's love of Rage Against the Machine is amusing, because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades. Charles Manson loved the Beatles but didn't understand them. Governor Chris Christie loves Bruce Springsteen but doesn't understand him. And Paul Ryan is clueless about his favorite band, Rage Against the Machine.

Ryan claims that he likes Rage's sound, but not the lyrics. Well, I don't care for Paul Ryan's sound or his lyrics. He can like whatever bands he wants, but his guiding vision of shifting revenue more radically to the one percent is antithetical to the message of Rage.

I wonder what Ryan's favorite Rage song is? Is it the one where we condemn the genocide of Native Americans? The one lambasting American imperialism? Our cover of "Fuck the Police"? Or is it the one where we call on the people to seize the means of production? So many excellent choices to jam out to at Young Republican meetings!

for such an activist/musician...

Morello certainly is ignorant. That's like saying that Ron Paul is in favor of the banking cartel running our lives! TM has clearly not ever bothered to hear what Dr. Paul has to say. Thats the biggest shame about the newsletter BS/the charges of racism- some people think they know all about RP before they'd ever listened to a word he said!

As for Paul Ryan, the guy IS MITT ROMNEY! He's for stimulus, TARP and auto bailouts! He's shockingly similar to Romney AND Obama, because he's just another DC insider

One coercive faction bashing the other.

"...we call on the people to seize the means of production?"

It's just a turf fight amongst the advocates of violent theft who differ only in rhetoric.

You nailed it.

I think it's fair to say that it's in no way different than standard collectivist, soviet dialectic.

Vastly documented. Dozens of millions of tons of books already dealing with it. And exclusively that topic.

So much for such supporters (or detractors) of America's "comeback team".

Didn't know America was on the other side of the ocean and we were approaching October 1917.

The low that they, demagogues thieves, bring themselves down to, doesn't cease to astonish me.

"Cyril" pronounced "see real". I code stuff.

That's the one. That's his favorite.
