High school valedictorian denied diploma over graduation speech

An Oklahoma high school valedictorian who used the word "hell" in her graduation speech in May has yet to receive her diploma.

Kaitlin Nootbaar graduated from Prague High School with a 4.0 grade point average, her father, David Nootbaar, told KFOR-TV. But school administrators told him that Kaitlin would have to submit a written apology in order to get her diploma.

A Similar Situation

I had a similar thing happen to me earlier this year. I gave my valedictory address about the shortcomings of public high school education (I'll post a link below, if you're interested). A few days later I was informed that I would not be being paid for conducting the music and helping to the build the set for my high school's spring musical, as I had been promised (fortunately, some teachers pulled for me and I was just paid a few weeks ago). I was also asked to come back for my diploma a week later, even though all the other graduates were given theirs immediately after the ceremony.

(my speech)--

My daughter had to submit a written apology

to one of her professors IN COLLEGE because there was a picture of her on Facebook where people were drinking beer and she was only 20 at the time.

It's been a few years ago so I don't remember the reason she said her professor was monitoring her facebook in the first place. (It seems like he was doing some kind of class experiment where no one was allowed to logon to FB for a week or some BS) I wrote the apology letter for her that was perfect...very condesending, made references to privacy, freedom, liberty, and such and my daughter signed it. I only did because my daughter begged me to. I told her if I were her I'll tell the fcuker to get bent...but she was all about her grade and GPA.

That happened recently after I had deleted my facebook account because I was worried about privacy. In my situation...I had been laid off from working as a govt contractor and didn't want my posts to cause me a problem trying to get another job.

It was bizzare because I had created a FB account using a compeletly fake name with all false DOB and such...but one day when I was trying to logon to FB from someone else's computer I had forgotten my password. In order to get logged on instead of having to answer challege questions...pictures where presented on the screen and it asked me to select the picture that included my sister, then a friend I went to highschool with, and then my Dad, etc. I was startled that it showed pictures of my family and friends when I was using a bogus name and did not have my pictures grouped into family/friends, etc.

That was the day I deleted my FB account.

These a-holes who think they own our students and teach them false history and just want them to obey authority make me sick.

The dept of education should be abolished. HELL, abolish the whole damn corrupt govt.

You did not delete your facebook page

You only hid it from us fellow mundanes. I "deleted" mine a long time ago. Once I wanted to log-on to some site that required a FB page for that purpose. So I quickly created a new one with all bogus info. It came up with suggestions for me to "friend" specific people whom I know personally. The page looked just like the one I "deleted."

If you still have it -

I'd love to read a copy of the letter you wrote. Maybe send it in so that this student can use it as well.

I back up my computers regularly so I probably do somewhere

I'll see if I can find it...but I write A LOT of letters and articles for friends...so it might be tough to locate. It will be fun to look for because even if I don't find it...I always find other docs I've written long ago that I enjoy re-reading.

Hell is all over the school - Red Devils....

She see's it every day. She was probably staring at images of the devil while giving the speech. Her subconscious filter was shot because she was probably nervious.

Truth is treason in an empire of lies

How is this

voted down?

I was stating that she was probably planning to say heck but because of the schools mascot etc it was a slip. So how can the school by promoting hell, punish someone for saying hell.

H8RS gonna H8...

Truth is treason in an empire of lies

Make sure the school

Make sure the school officials release her transcripts unaltered? They are brave bullies when it comes to witholding a diploma from a scholarly student. Isn't that why they invited her to be valedictorian in the first place? On the other hand can this girl not refrain from using obviously offensive language? She' not on Comedy Central. Can she not word an acceptable apology and get on with it? Does she plan on becoming a foreign student to get post high school education? If she wants to make a stand on this.... I'm with her but is this the best she can do?

I got an F

for a Speech in speech class. The assignment was to give a speech on a life changing experience....I discussed how I became a Christian. The F I received was because it was a testimony and not a life changing experience???????????...............It has effected how I look on public schooling to this day. C I could have understood...Fail= Religious persecution. Hell is real. Maybe they don't want people to know the truth in public school. I agree maybe homeschooling is the way to go.

Can we say home schooling?

It is the only way to go.

She Doesn't Need It

I'd be interested in reading her valedictorian speech to learn in what context she used the word "hell". I imagine right now she is using the word while thinking: "why the hell did I bother giving a speech in that ridiculous looking outfit"?

Tell them " Who the hell wants it anyway?"

No one is going to want to see the diploma it's the transcripts that matter. So tell them who the hell wants that piece of paper.

James Steele Jr. Tennessee

does it matter?

will anybody ever ask to look at her diploma? If so where.

ok innernets, lets teach

ok innernets, lets teach these bullies at that school a lesson... 4chan and Reddit enter the fray.....

I had a similar situation happen at graduation

They would not give me a diploma at the graduation ceremony, they wound up mailing it to me a month later, because they had to. I passed every class, never was suspended, I just managed to annoy the small minded PTB in the school. It was their last little jab, LOL. Schools can be run like little dictatorships and that's not very compatible with liberty minded people.

The Dept. of education...

The Dept. of education...

you can't make up this stuff

Wanna see something

Wanna see something hilariously ironic... google the school and check out their mascot.

I'd tell you here but you may think I'm kidding around.

Just google it.

why google

here's the header from their website -

and the website is -

I guess they didn't want her reminding everyone that they were already in hell.

( the context was =

Kaitlin recounted how annoying it is to be constantly asked what she wants to do as graduation approached. "How the hell do I know?" she said, according to her father. "I've changed my mind so many times."

The problem was that she used the word 'heck' in the text submission to the school board - I guess none of them have ever used the word hell instead of heck.

Now that is really wierd

If anyone watched the first Twilight movie Bella's friend Jessica Stanley gave a very similar speech.

"When we were five, they asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. Our answers were things like astronaut, president, or in my case, a princess. When we were ten, they asked again. We answered rockstar, cowboy, or in my case, a gold medalist. But now that we've grown up, they want a serious answer. Well, how about this, "Who the hell knows?" This isn't the time to make hard and fast decisions, this is the time to make mistakes. Take the wrong train and get stuck somewhere. Fall in love. A lot. Major in philosophy because there is no way to make a career out of that. Change your mind and change it again, because nothing's permanent. So make as many mistakes as you can. That way, someday when they ask what we wanna be, we won't have to guess. We'll know."

I'm just curious how a school can refuse to give her a diploma when she passed all her classes. Maybe daddy needs a good attorney rather than bending over and kissing their ass's.

Classic. What the hell man?

What the hell man? ;D

WOW! You are spot on! They
