Naomi Wolf: The New Totalitarianism of Surveillance Technology

A software engineer in my Facebook community wrote recently about his outrage that when he visited Disneyland, and went on a ride, the theme park offered him the photo of himself and his girlfriend to buy – with his credit card information already linked to it. He noted that he had never entered his name or information into anything at the theme park, or indicated that he wanted a photo, or alerted the humans at the ride to who he and his girlfriend were – so, he said, based on his professional experience, the system had to be using facial recognition technology. He had never signed an agreement allowing them to do so, and he declared that this use was illegal. He also claimed that Disney had recently shared data from facial-recognition technology with the United States military.

Yes, I know: it sounds like a paranoid rant.

Except that it turned out to be true. News21, supported by the Carnegie and Knight foundations, reports that Disney sites are indeed controlled by face-recognition technology, that the military is interested in the technology, and that the face-recognition contractor, Identix, has contracts with the US government – for technology that identifies individuals in a crowd.

Fast forward: after the Occupy crackdowns, I noted that odd-looking CCTVs had started to appear, attached to lampposts, in public venues in Manhattan where the small but unbowed remnants of Occupy congregated: there was one in Union Square, right in front of their encampment. I reported here on my experience of witnessing a white van marked "Indiana Energy" that was lifting workers up to the lampposts all around Union Square, and installing a type of camera. When I asked the workers what was happening – and why an Indiana company was dealing with New York City civic infrastructure, which would certainly raise questions – I was told: "I'm a contractor. Talk to ConEd."

Shopping discount card story...

Last year, a friend and I were using the kiosk at the airport to print out boarding passes. I inserted my credit card used to purchase the tickets and the machine printed out my boarding pass. My friend then did the same thing except she mistakenly inserted her shopping discount card for a local supermarket chain instead of her credit card. No matter, the kiosk printed out her boarding passes using the information scanned from the shopping discount card. I know it isn't as disturbing as the facial recognition story, but it disturbed the hell out of me.

You don't have to be the one who provides and

tags a photo of you...

All it takes is someone else who has a photo of you in the system to "tag" it as you - BAM! - you're in the facial recognition database whether you like it or not.

This is why I tell my wife, whenever Facebook prompts for a tag on uploaded photos - "skip!"

The NDAA: a clear and present danger to American liberty ...The US is sleepwalking into becoming a police state, www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2012/feb/29/

If one needed a reason to boycott both Obama and Romney in 2012, look no further than this one. No politician who in his or her heart truly identifies with average Americans and our God given right to live as independent beings in a free society could have supported the NDAA without placing their personal agenda or those of their fellow establishment elites above our interests. There is no excuse in the book that eradicates the damage such an act like the NDAA hoists onto Americans by tossing out the Due Process Clause and the Bill or Rights enacted in 1787. Obama might as well have tossed a dead banana peel out the window with his cold sentiments having conveyed the disgrace of his actions. Romney openly supported the NDAA with equal disregard for the Constitution tossing centuries of liberties out the window.

We elect these people to serve us, to defend us and protect us as government servants, yet we have become a nation of sheep serving the interests of the politicians; they bow to their corporate masters, not to their fellow Americans when they pass laws that suspend our freedoms. In fact, Wolf discusses the reason behind the crackdown on dissent attributing it to the corporate fear that the Goldman Sachs et al/banker criminal perpetrators might otherwise be exposed for their crimes.

Ron Paul was the first POTUS GOP frontrunner to speak out against the NDAA and the first congressman to offer a solution to the legislation. Only he deserves a fellow patriot’s vote to hold the highest office in the land. I vote for no one but Ron Paul in 2012!

This article makes it seem like Disney is sharing the information with the military. I am one of the programmers that worked with Disney and Identix to help implement part of this system in EPCOT center, and we did not implement anything that would indicate any sharing was being done outside of Disney property. They use the face recognition also to help you find your photo, by rematching your face when you exit the ride in order so that you can send an email from there with your ride video. There are a number of companies that do this face matching software, as we looked at most of them, and there is also open source, called OpenCV, where anyone can use this technology.

The real scary part of Disney is why anyone would pay so much to stand in such long lines.

How does Disney get the

How does Disney get the credit card number?

Disney gets the credit card

from the person who gave them the card to pay for something at the park, probably at the ticket booth, although I didn't know they are taking photos at that point. From what we designed, I think the article is highly inaccurate. Identix is in no way accurate enough to match faces with credit card information. He would have had to go to a kiosk where you could enter your credit card information, and then the kiosk would bring up some pictures that it thought were close matches, and ask if it was you. So, like they mention in the article yes it is "a paranoid rant". Disney can't get your credit card unless you give it to them.

And even if they did start doing more big brother stuff, they are doing it as a convenience feature. If you don't like that feature, then vote with your dollars and don't go there! That's how a free market is supposed to work, that's how these things are kept in check.

No...that is not what's scary about Disney.

Disney is a huge propaganda and indoctrination machine for the NWO, has been for a long, long time. They promote the dominate social memes used by TPTB to "herd the sheep" so to speak...Children are always the first target of those with long range goals. Are you old enough to remember "The Mouseketeers"? I am! Remember all the anti-gun cartoons (poor Bambi!)And it has grown from that seemingly innocent Mouseketeer Club. Disney is a vital tool to the meme makers and an important part of the matrix.

Well I guess

that they do own ABC. And ABC takes an active part of the blackout of Ron Paul. Either way, there is no reason for being paranoid over facial recognition just yet, as the Identix system works extremely poorly, and could easily be fooled by a set of Groucho glasses with nose and mustache! At least the version I worked with, it gets a low percentage of matches, and this is from the same faces that were scanned minutes before hand when the people started ride.

In the future, the same will apply, it would be easy to wear a disguise. What about the finger print scanners when you enter the park gates?

Thanks for your comments.

Thanks for your comments. theya re helpful. Scroll down, earlier I had posted it was time to invest in Groucho Marx noses and glasses! Little did I know the technology could actually be fooled in that manner! I was not aware of the fingerprint scanners. Actually I have not been to any theme parks in years and years.

Once you do some research

you will find that Disney World was the first military industrial complex... they propagated war cartoons forever... hell they have 666 right in their logo... which doesnt stand for satan but stands for a meaning of a secret society that uses dumb cult symbolism. Their is reason Walt Disney's head is still frozen and it wasn't cuz he made cartoons for kids.. no wait actually it was for the brainwashing of our youth ever since it was created. So facial Recognition is no surprise there.

Who is Who.....

Guy Foxx masks are proving to be a valuable commodity in the Anti-Tyranny movement. Wonder if Brandon Raub was wearing a mask in his FB post... would they really know who to pick up? A little creepy how myth and reality start to meld.

This is just one of several

This is just one of several reasons I refuse to own and use a camera on my computer. If you disguise yourself to keep your identity to yourself you run a very real risk of being arrested. Remind me never to go to Disneyland, Disney World or to purchase ANY Disney products as long as they continue this outrage.

I guess they can use it in public, but not on private property

Even if the owners allow it.

Is that right?

Naomi Wolf is a heroine!

Great op-ed as always, from her.

I hope she speaks out for Brandon Raub.

We need her in this fight.
