Is it a SWAT Team or the 10th Mountain Division in Jacksonville Florida? My letter to the Mayor.

Dear Mayor Brown,

I am a military veteran and concerned citizen. I read a story on Channel 12 News that concerned me today. It was the call out of a military style SWAT team to handle an episode involving a mentally unstable man that barricaded himself in his home. The article says the man was "armed with a box cutter." I am concerned both fiscally and socially with the response from the JSO; in my mind it seems like over kill and a waste of money. This being said, I do not know the details of the event, so maybe I am wrong. But please tell me why we are sending a SWAT team with automatic rifles against a crazy person with a box cutter.

The other disturbing thing is the photographic record of the event on Channel 12 News. A SWAT team member was wearing a black flack vest with an Army dessert camouflage uniform. Please correct me if I am wrong, but last time I checked we are in Jacksonville and not in Afghanistan or Iraq. I think the JSO needs to uniform their police as the peace keepers and the civil servants they are supposed to be and not soldiers. I understand the hostilities of the police profession but I think it sends the wrong message to our citizens to have SWAT in U.S. Military dress.

As I said, I am a concerned citizen. We do not need militarized police nor do we need them handling a mentally ill man as if they were going into Fallujah.

As a tax payer and citizen of this city I would appreciate a response.

Thank you,

Matt Thomas

By the way...I think you are doing an overall very good job managing the city and I like that you are cutting but doing so in a way that is fair and responsible.

My God, how many cops were there for one man and

a box cutter?

I know....

why I felt it needed to address the Mayor...I could not address the Jacksonville police on their web page .... at least I could not find a "contact" email address....

Half as many cops as if the man had been wielding

a box of Krispy Kremes.
