converting people who are against RP's defense policy

0 votes

While bringing the troops home is the most important part of why we support Dr. Paul, it is also the biggest obstacle I run into trying to convert people. Everyone thinks his monetary and domestic policy are great, but many are afraid of his laissez-faire defense strategy. I'm trying to figure out the best approaches to overcome fears. One thing I thought of was to ask those who support our interventions to name me their favorite foreign police action (non-declared war) and what positive result they were pleased with. That's one strategy but I still think people will have the "if we don't act offensively someone else will" fear. Who has been effective overcoming that argument and what strategy did you use?

Easy way to convert: Ask them what government did to them

I have been writing a lot about this subject.

I am pro-war and disagree with Ron Paul on that subject. But the Iraq War is over and the strategic shift in power from Sunnis to Shiites is such that the Sunnis and Shiites should now be left with some new NEW American diplomats who can help them sort things out between themselves.

But, if military readiness was my main concern, I would be backing Thompson now.

But I was conquered by Ron Paul supporters in a round-about way.

I live in Europe where I have always presumed that my being "American" is only relevant in that being raised there gave me perfect English which makes it easy to get jobs around the world.

But Bush/McCain/Clinton got a bunch of laws passed since 2001, which got worse in 2005, that say the US Government "owns" US citizens anywhere in the world and can force them to reveal bank accounts and submit to background checks to talk to foreigners on social networking websites and answer in the USA to crimes committed overseas.

Ron Paul clumsily got the message across to us somehow (he did not directly address our concerns when he could have).

Every American I know who is living outside the USA is now voting for Ron Paul. They know what government has done to them.

Ask whomever you meet what government has done to them that they do not like.

Then tell them that Ron Paul, or the movement behind him, will put government in its place...or try to.

Ron Paul would presumably fire all the Bush era Republicans who can be identified by others in Washington as being the ones with fascist tendencies.

I would not trust Fred Thompson to fire the Bush era officials in the Justice Department and DHS who would try to keep these laws on the books.

So tell the pro-war people you meet that keeping a civil war "civil" in Baghdad is not really what their vote in 2008 should be about.

And if they tell you that they are concerned about Paki nukes and Iranian nukes, tell them that Bush still has a full year to deal with them or else maybe he does not really WANT to deal with them because he wants us to keep living in fear.

Give them a copy of the book "1984" and tell them that George Orwell was a conservative who was FOR the Vietnam War, and get them to promise you that they will read it.

Orwell's book will show that, if Bush really wanted to deal with Iran, he would have already done so. If he wanted to keep the citizens in fear, he would have dragged out the fear from 2001 to 2009 with no end in sight.

If they do not care or believe that Americans are now, apparently, the "property" of the US government even when they leave the US, show them this video:

Be sure to tell them that the ACLU is hypocritical half the time but correct in terms of what they are talking about in this video.

People used to say

that having a strong economy is our best national defense. You don't hear that much anymore.

Bill Clinton left George Bush with the largest budget surplus in history and now it's a distant memory.

RP has been adamant about going after the perpetrators of 9/11, most of whom are from Saudi Arabia. Under his leadership the US would not have been distracted to go into Iraq and it is *more* likely that we would have caught those responsible for 9/11.

Under his leadership we wouldn't have built up Musharraf (I estimate that every man, woman and child sent him about $40 each) who now won't let us pursue those Al Qaeda members in Pakistan.

There's so much blowback with the policies the US has used in recent history that it's hard to see how so many people defend these policies.

Sorry I didn't answer your question about the police actions - I don't defend them.

Stay strong and keep up the work. There's a lot at stake and I for one appreciate all the hard work folks are doing to promote RP's message. I haven't given much of my time (I have a busy job) but I have contributed $400 to the campaign--I wish I had time to be out there talking to people.

Sane and strong defense

Diplomacy first!

Ron Paul has a very strong defense platform. Limiting our presence worldwide while focusing militarily on the groups responsible for acts of aggression. Improving our intelligence agencies collection of information while stopping their destabilizing treachery.

Laissez-fair? Not even close.

If we would have had Ron Paul instead of Bush, Bin Laden would be dead and we definitely would not have a war in Iraq. He approved action to get Bin Laden in Afghanistan.

Ron Paul goes after the source of the problems - proven time and again.

With Ron Paul in the White House, you can damn well guarantee the use of the military and mercenary forces would be Constitutionally legal, and lethal to any aggressive enemies of the USA.

We don't need another President easily distracted from real military objectives - replaced by preconceived ideas of empire, or worse, Islamo boogie men in the shadows of their minds.

Huckabee and Thompson have clearly shown their irresponsible lust for killing. Rudy is advised by a man that thinks we should drop nukes on Iran - yesterday, if not sooner. McCain honestly believes we must have an expanded war in Iraq to restore the good name of the USA. Romney, clueless, will consult his lawyers.

A withdrawal from Iraq will require help and cooperation from the neighbors. Who best to negotiate with Iran? Right on, Ron Paul.

Defense policy of Ron Paul is strong and responsible. It is his depth of understanding of the conflicts and the history of the region that make him the best choice for President. No other candidate, either Republican or Democratic, is as capable as Ron Paul.

You can move the topic from the Middle East to any hot spot on the globe. Non-intervention allows despots, but it also does not pour arms and money into unstable regions that escalate and prolong the human crisis.

The US has aided our enemies with many billions of dollars and is arming both sides of conflicts around the globe. Status quo policy that must be stopped. Ron Paul will stop it.

Boots on the ground in 12 hours

With todays technology we can have boots on the ground anywhere in the world in 12 hours. Why should our tax money go to the economy of a foriegn country when ti could be used here at home.

It takes more time to go from Germany to Iraq, then it would if we went from here, because we are required to get permission from every country we fly over. This can be avoided by flying the ocean route direct.

Our military spends so much money in foriegn countries that each one of their currencies remain strong al the while ours is falling in value everywhere.

Fat Neighbor Raiding Your Fridge

That's one strategy but I still think people will have the "if we don't act offensively someone else will" fear. Who has been effective overcoming that argument and what strategy did you use?

Just ask them if it's right for them to preemptively attack their fat neighbor on fear that he/she may raid their fridge...

that sounds good

but it is almost too funny, plus my dad is pretty overweight already....it is a good idea though, i am going to think about trying it..

I just tell them

that every gallon of their gas has been paid for by the blood of an American service man or woman.

I say this: "Do you know

I say this:

"Do you know that China doesn't have any military bases around the world?"

Then I say: "Who in their right mind would ever attack or invade China?"

They'll always say: "Ummmmmm, I don't know"

well the answer is NOBODY! China has a deadly military and they don't need to invade other countries and have bases overseas.

Bottom line, America has one of the most advanced and powerful army in the world. No country or group of people can invade or really take over our country.

Having less soldiers on our land keeps us less safe and more vulnerable.

We should get out of the Middle East and bring our troops HOME to defend US.

go again

Show the economics disaster the war has created.

Tell seniors the war is busting their social security.

Only way to reach em, is go for their self-interest---money.

this guy is only 40

He's a gun-totin America-lovin 40-year-old. He's from Alabama (which, by the way is looking really good for Dr. Paul), and he thinks of himself as a true patriot. But he is of the mindset that to be a true patriot you have to agree with everything our politicians tell our military to do. That is a very tough nut to crack, and I don't want to piss him off by pestering him--I want one succinct argument that will show him the error of his opinion. He's a smart guy. He can handle the truth if it is presented to him properly. I'm just trying to find the right way to get to him without pissing him off.

War Is A Racket

But he is of the mindset that to be a true patriot you have to agree with everything our politicians tell our military to do.

Have him read War is a Racket and other writings by Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler.

I find the worst way to convince people of Ron Paul is to say "Ron Paul this and Ron Paul that..." Find out what issues are important to them. If they're interested, show them counter arguments from respected sources. So, if they like military men, show them contrarian arguments from military people. If they're able to accept the counter arguments on their own, then they'll find Ron Paul on their own. And, you didn't have to pester them.

Tell him this for me

I am a resident of Alabama also and live just north east of Wetumpka. I am a Viet-Nam vet with two purple hearts. I know the truth that my blood was shed for a lie. I hear the same lies being said to defend this war as I heard said to defend that war. History has proven the deception and duplicity of our government in promoting a war so that companies like Brown and Root could get a multi-million dollar contract to dredge Cam Rahn Bay which has one of the best natural harbors in the world and nothing was ever dredged, or Bell Helicopter (Ladybird a big stock holder) which took payment for several hundred helicopters that it never made. War is big business and our sons and daughters and fathers and mothers are dying in a war without cause except to line the pockets of the corporations. Tell him to talk to some of the combat vets from this war and see what they have to say. After all, it is they who are paying for that oil with their blood.

There is only one thing to

There is only one thing to do with this guy. Make him watch Iraq for sale. Wars aren't the way he grew up thinking, any more. Our real enemy now, is domestic--not foreign. Just let him watch that and you will not need to say more.,,

and don't forget.......No

and don't forget.......No war declared!! It is illegal, unconstitutional war.

this is pretty simple

how to teach a child to handle money

when the child has earned some money from hard work, take 40% of it and give it to the neighbors.

Tell the child the neighbors need it more than they do and that it will make the neighbors like them.

Then, when the child needs things give him a loan for 3 times the value of the items.

Charge 2% interest for the first month and 30% thereafter. Borrow money from the neighbors to buy the items for the child.

Tell the child if they want more possessions to just get another loan. After all, money can be printed any time and it also grows on trees.

The neighbors will gladly loan the money because they like having their neighbors owe them.

Especially neighbors who buy their poorly made toys.

When any neighbors get into arguments with each other give each of them a baseball bat, but tell them they can't fight each other directly.

They must go through you to verify if each swing is a smart move.

Tell the child they need to give the rest of their money to buy more baseball bats, and get the other children in the household to go over to the neighbors and use their baseball bats against one side of the argument.

Also, if they need more toys at this point, they should get a loan. After all, money is only paper and we can make more any time we want to.

you could go much farther with this, but this is all I have so far.

Of course this explanation won't work on my dad who is also very "if we don't someone else will"

Dillution of power and wars of aggression... relevant quotes.

Having our troops spread out over 130 nations and having our navy across the world harldy makes our national defence better.

A strong national defence would mean our troops defending our nation.

Further more, a strong military is a rested military not one engaged in war constantly..
