Advice on how to break into local/state political involvement

Say you wanted to follow in the footsteps of Ron Paul (impossible, I know) or Justin Amash and pursue a seat in Congress -- where would you start?

Yes, I realize a suit and a haircut would probably be in order. ;)

p.s., How amazing would it be to call Ron Paul for advice in Congress??

There is too much emphasis put on - joining the committee

right away.

The first thing is to attend your town party's monthly meeting.

Then do some covert activity:
Go to your local board of elections, ask for the FOIL (freedom of information form), have them help you fill it out. Ask for the Republican committeeman list for your town, the state committeeman list for your county, and a copy of your county republican party rules.

Our BOE charges 0.25 for each zerox sheet. My town has 121 committeemen, so I paid for 12 sheets.

Then, make sure you get a copy of the FOIL that you had to fill out.

Remember the name of the person/people you dealt with at the BOE.

At this point you have your first firepower. You have "inside" knowledge that probably most of those committeepeople never bothered to look up.

When you get this far, feel free to PM me so I know your going to post here on what to do next. We will jump in to help you.

Buy a mirror at Target and practice lying n front of it. Play

Monopoly and practice cheating. On Sundays, go over and steal your neighbor's newspaper.

If you can do these three things you are ready to "break in".

Seriouly...do as Dr. Paul and Granger suggest: join the Central Committee. It's the best way. Then you can say you wer on it at the local level.

2) Learn to be a good public speaker
3) Don't be a douche
4) Read, Read, Read, Read

Well, I started doing some

Well, I started doing some research. A few interesting things I've found:

1) The elections being held in November include District Attorneys, District Judges, Court of Appeals Justices and Chief Justices, State Representatives, State Senators, Board of Education Members, State Supreme Court Judges, Railroad Commissioners, U.S. House Representatives, U.S. Senator, and President/VP.

2) Out of all of the aforementioned elections (we're looking at well over one hundred, maybe a few hundred) only a single person is running as an independent (except official write-in candidates for President/VP)

3) In my district, the congressman is a Republican (Sam Johnson). He is running in the 2012 election unopposed. It's too late to get going obviously for this election, but maybe 2-4 years down the road.

4) Sam Johnson voted as follows on some key issues:

- Against the 10/3/2008 HR1424 Bush Bailout
- For the 12/14/2011 HR1540 NDAA
- For the 5/26/2011 Patriot Act Extension (Roll call # 376 to concur w/ S.990)

(Will be adding more as I have time)

when you find out...

Let me know I want to get in and I don't know where to start.

Do you mean how to get involved in the party?

.

Yes How do you Get in to the party..

I think I found an answer.. I would have to go down to my local GOP office and go to meetings start a following of people who like me and my ideas.. and get in that way..
