What could Gary Johnson do to get your vote?

(EDIT: For what it is worth, I personally will not be supporting Johnson. The deeper I look into him and his positions, the further he gets from our movement. That was part of the exercise though - to find out what the issues with him are.)

I'm not giving Gary Johnson my vote yet. I know folks are going to peg me as one of the pushers for Gary Johnson - I'm not. That being said, I have to wonder if we are missing an opportunity by not giving him a chance to win our vote. To not give him a chance to win our vote would be folly.

Gary seems to be desperate for our attention - he is even having a town hall for Ron Paul supporters 9/10 (thread on the DP).

The revolution is supposed to be about the ideas to which Ron Paul has exposed us. Is it not our duty to try to get Gary Johnson to adopt as many of Paul's positions as possible?

GJ may not be in tune with our movement - but he is tuned in and listening.

Please list and vote-up the comments below that you would like to see Gary do - to get your vote. Feel free to suggest cabinet positions / etc! We can then present them in some form to GJ in the aforementioned town hall. Let's try to avoid fighting over Gary's positions. If you disagree with what someone says - just write a civil reply with a link to Gary's current position. Thanks!

---- EDIT: List of positions/clarifications desired (some may already be his position - treat those as 'clarification')

END THE FED - To promote the audit and eventual end of the Fed
Competing Currencies - To promote the legalization of competing currencies
CFR - Explain any ties he has to it and what he believe the CFR is about
Abortion - He is pro-life - which I doubt we can change. I believe we want, as does he, the abortion issue to be a state issue
Non-Agression - No interventionism for any reason
No Foreign Aid
Austrian Economics - To promote austrian economists within his administration
End Departments of Education, Energy, Commerce, Interior, HUD
Bring Troops Home from wherever they might be

Good question, so I am once again...

tempted into the GJ discussion.

Its not about policy positions. That's the problem with him trying to get RP style support. He is making the same mistake ALL politicians makes. They all are looking for the "policies" that make us so loyal. It's NOT about specific policies. It's because every policy choice Ron Paul makes stems from an understanding and belief in principle. In Ron Paul's case, it is the NAP. But that isn't even the only principle that would attract this support.

Let me give an example. Most libertarians are pro-choice. RP is pro-life, so why do we accept that difference? Because he explained that he believes life begins at conception and therefore abortion is a violation of the NAP (he didn't have to use the word NAP). It's not enough to convince most of us to change our minds, but it is enough for us to respect him because he reconciled it with his PRINCIPLES and ours.

Most libertarians are pro-immigration. RP says he wants to enhance border security, but that it is only because of the welfare state. (He is stating that border security is a lesser violation of the NAP than unfettered access to the welfare system). I could go on for days. It's not that we agree with him on everything. THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. It's that we can respect the fact that he explains why something aligns with NAP, or why he sees a short term NAP violation as acceptable due to the reality of the situation.

So what can Gary Johnson do? Determine what his principle is, state it, and then make EVERY policy choice based on that, and explain why it matches up. If he specifically wants RP Supporters, it should be the NAP. But if he chooses ANY principle, it will draw the SAME loyalty, just maybe not from us.

This is the only answer that matters. If you focus on "policy decisions", you will never be successful. As a Libertarian nominee, he signed the pledge, he should know this already. And in Ron Paul's case, the loyalty runs SO deep because of his 30 year history of following his principle which is rare and unheard of.

Have a heart, mind and conscience transplant from Ron Paul.

That isn't going to happen so it's a lost cause I'm afraid.

"Jesus answered them: 'Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.'" (John 8:34-36)

Congratulations, you have started

the one millionth Gary Johnson thread.

expose the CFR and explain CFR

thats my main issue with johnson...the rest is just baggage to me

Nothing.

Anything he said would be a lie in my eyes.

probably nothing

he turned me off when i see his adds a yr ago telling "ron paul supporters" to vote for him - a year ago - he turns me off when the whole campaign is based on rounding up ron paul supporters like we can magically win him the race - he is pro humanitarian war (strike force in uganda even), he doesnt impress me when he speaks just steals a few ron paul talking points and moves on - i dont trust the LP whatsoever, this to me - is a completely aimed campaign at the rp supporters - for 1 money and 2 divide us - make your statement in 2012 guys but the LP is MOST DEFINITELY not our future - i cant even find a local lp party in my county - because the party as a whole is non existant. INFILTRATE THE GOP.

i seen this on the homepage today - i posted in to facebook the day before - ive been noticing this alot - cant say it completely but im starting to think i have some dailypaulers on my facebook! :) good day!

Freedom.

At this time he appears to be my logical vote because

Florida dosent recognize write-in votes, and I intend to go on record as rejecting both Obama and Romney.

To date he hasn't done anything to inside me to support him and I did see him speak at Paulfest. If he were to start reaching out to the American people that would be a good start. Watching his supporters prostilize active Ron Paul supporters for the past 8 months during Ron Paul's active and successful campaign was a real turn off for me. Also his beliefs on the role of the federal government over states rights and other nations sovernity is troubling.

all he has to do for me is

siphon enough votes off Romney to keep him out of office and weaken him as a candidate for 2016 when Rand runs for POTUS and i will be happy. I think he's the right man for the job...

"If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin."
Samuel Adams

Apparently he is an equal opportunity vote siphon-er.

1/2 from Romney and 1/2 from Obama.

Nah

He will take way more from Romney than Obama....

"If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin."
Samuel Adams

Well they did do a four state test

and he took more from Barack in two states and the other two he took more from Mitt.

Nah

I don't buy it. The overwhelming majority of Independents will still vote Romney or Obama this election cycle and the Rethugs and Dems will always vote Rethug and Dem...This movement and its numbers will be the deciding factor on whether Romney wins or not and if we pull together and vote for GJ when its all over the numbers will reflect that. The Republicans already know this, that's why they want GJ off the ballot....

"If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin."
Samuel Adams

Nah

I think the reason why is because he could potentially clean their clock.

Exactly

He will clean the Republicans clock by taking votes away from Romney . What would weaken and discredit the status-quo Republican Party and clear the way for us in 2016 than to lose to the worst President EVER? Ding Ding...we win...

Tell me are you a MOD?

I will probably vote for him

But I can not support him.

?

i dont get the logic - i cant support him but ill vote for him? i wont vote for someone i cant support.

Freedom.

Let me break it down for you

I am against taxation.
I do not support taxation.
I would how ever vote for 5% taxation if the current rate was 5%.

By support, I mean advocate for at capital expense. I would rather advocate for a 0% tax rate than a 5% tax rate, but I would vote for a 5% tax rate.

All he has to do is prove to me my Ron Paul Write-in won't count

Then he gets my vote.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

What state do you live in?

The status of write-in votes varies from state to state. There are some states where write-ins are completely disallowed. There are others where write-ins are only counted if there are enough in total to possibly change the outcome of the election. Others where the vote isn't counted unless the candidate registers as a write-in candidate.

In states where a Ron Paul write-in does get counted and reported, it's the best possible *visible* protest against what the RNC and Romney did to Ron Paul a little more than a week ago.

Gary Johnson

Lets support him for our liberty cause.

pointless/inflammatory topic

i'm a johnson-voting ron paul supporter.

and i'm modding this topic down.

it doesn't contribute positively to this site.

d

Yeah - that doesn't make sense

What kind of Johnson supporter are you?

I started the thread - I was sincere in starting it... my thinking was that if I didn't intend to vote for him, I could at least give him a chance to win my vote. All the Johnson people are running around telling me how stupid I am for not supporting Johnson: 'He is 85% Ron Paul.' I didn't see one Johnson supporter saying "How can Gary win your vote? I did it for them. How is that inflammatory?

Your comment is inflammatory :)

He's not getting my vote now anyway ;)

It most certaintly is a relevant topic especialy since his main

goal is to win over the dedicated Ron Paul supporters. Again the topic is what could he have to do to win our vote.

I'm down voting your comment based on your intolerance of differing opinions and reasonable debate of the relevant issues.

end all entitlements

that would secure it.

If he came out as a 9-11 truther

and offered a public apology for ever being stupid enough to believe that our troops are keeping us safe, I would start listening to him.

If he offered to give Bradley Manning an immediate pardon, that'd be interesting.

If he put everything on the line to speak the truth, instead of playing it safe...in short, if he acted with the bravery of Ron Paul, and sustained the abuse and mockery that Ron Paul had to sustain all these years, for speaking the truth...then I might start to take an interest.

But for now, the man has little substance to recommend him.

Yeah because political suicide is such a good option.

Seriously why do you think Ron never came out on that one? Even though now more people are coming around, you still need a seven foot pole as opposed to the 10 foot pole four years ago. Either way it won't help.

Quit harassing me would be a good place to start!

How can people claim to be libertarian when they are constantly attempting to convince other's to think the way they insist upon?

Definition of LIBERTARIAN
1
: an advocate of the doctrine of free will
2
a : a person who upholds the principles of individual liberty especially of thought and action

Who's trying to convince you

Who's trying to convince you of anything? I am merely explaining why I personally can not support Gary Johnson. Do what you want. I was just answering the original poster's question.

Besides, didn't Bastiat say that government exists solely to defend life, liberty, and property?
