We're the smartest of the bunch, let's spell like it!

Okey guyz, aftar beeing ohn hear 4 yeahers....

Ron Paul people are the smartest Americans. I'm not some spelling champion, actually I suck at spelling, but please....

I still have "ALOT" to do for the Reveolution, and wake people up!

"A Lot" is the word we're loooking for. "ALOT" is NOT a word! Almost Everyone, everywhere uses the word "ALOT".

Let's be "a lot" better with this simple correct use of the word. As bad as a speller that I am, this drives me nuts seeing the smartest people of the bunch on the DP use it.

According to a grammer website:
"Though common in informal communication, alot is not a dictionary-recognized word, and it’s generally considered out of place in formal writing. If you want to be safe, make it two words—a lot. It is like any two-word phrase with the indefinite article (a) followed by a noun (lot). For instance, a cow, a cloud, and a burrito are similarly constructed phrases, but no one would write these acow, acloud, and aburrito. So why a lot is so often compounded into alot is an interesting linguistic mystery."

I know my spelling is far from perfect, but I hope, for whatever it's worth, we can become "a lot" better at defending our point of views on politics using correct grammer.

Related: Ok... I love you all, but this is really bugging me. Loose, Lose, Losing.

"Jesus answered them: 'Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.'" (John 8:34-36)

YES! I like your post alot!

So the dictionary rules usage.

Or does a dictionary reflect usage.

Hwaet we Gar-Dena in gear-dagum ~Beowulf

English is just not what it was.

Using the term a lot doesn't even makes sense directly. Is this the dictionary trying to override a more sensible construction.

When speaking is there a definite article?

Is on talking about alot as in many? Or a definite instance of a class of objects named lot.

Free includes debt-free!

For the love of God, can we

For the love of God, can we please use proper grammar as well?

And Punctuation....

And Paragraphs....

Spelling is conformism and collectivism

Which individualists are often against.

Plus, how can a language evolve into a more efficient form of communication if it is not allowed to adapt?

The point of language is communication, not strict adherence to previous spellings.

But, unfortunately, our conformist, collectivist society, does judge us upon whether or not we conform.

But, aren't we here to change that?

You are talking about a tool.

It is not somehow more libertarian to use a dull knife than a sharp one. Since our goal is to convince others of our philosophy, it behooves us to use language that does not imply that we are ignorant or uneducated. That is the message that bad spelling or grammar sends, like it or not. If you suck at spelling, use a spell-checker.

The last time I checked, we were not a linguistics movement. Did I miss a meeting?

It was just some thoughts

And, to the contrary, it is more libertarian to allow competitive spellings, rather than dictating one.

Though, I agree your overall message.

Ranting about spelling and grammar errors while failing to spell GRAMMAR correctly!

I keep searching the internet for this "GRAMMER website" but the only results are for the actor Kelsey Grammer...

used for plural instead of just for contractions and possessive is so common now days, and I don't know why.

You must have ALOT of stress

in your life if you let something so insignificant compel you to make a thread.

But wait I thought we were

But wait I thought we were supposed to spell with numbers whenever possible! R0n p4u1 r3v01ution right right right!?!?

Oh, and the 't' in 'often' is silent. So stop pronouncing it. Pet peeve.

Good grammar

is the difference between knowing 'your' crap, and knowing "you're" crap.lol

errors don't bother me so much especially when the idea being conveyed is intelligent and thoughtful.

My biggest pet peeve - and I've been hearing it a lot - is people leaving the 's' off plural words that end in 'st.'

further along the road to regaining our LIBERTY.

Truth is, we have mostly meat of the bell curve types swelling our numbers. Monkey see, monkey do Parrots, parroting stupidity and mindlessly repeating the same mistakes-over and over.

The PTB plays our crew, with ease and great success, with well worn and obvious tools that still baffle most of those "With" us.

Not familiar..

A patriot must always be prepared to defend his country from his government.

Powers That Be

It is shorthand for the very, very, top of the top people that really determine what happens; where the real power resides.

Thanks for asking for clarification. It is a sign of intelligence to admit when one is ignorant(lacking in a specific knowledge) and seeking out that knowledge when the need arises. Many people are reluctant to admit ignorance of some topic because they incorrectly think ignorance/ignorant is a synonym of words meaning low intelligence. No shame at all in being ignorant, only in knowing one is ignorant of knowledge that is important or necessary for ones needs and not correcting that situation. All humans will live their lives being ignorant of most knowledge because there exist far too much knowledge/information for any human to assimilate/retain and it is not practical nor necessary to seek knowledge one would never need until all the needed knowledge is retained.

Thanks again for your question.

a pet peeve

Yes, the 'alot' thing is a pet peeve of mine. Also, here is one that people don't write, but say ALL THE TIME: 'a-whole-nother'. It's so annoying.

drives me nuts to see "all of

drives me nuts to see "all of THE sudden". Dangit people, its "all of A sudden!"

I do not think that the people who are posting here are bad enough to warrant a post for this. I've seen very few spelling and grammatical errors here. As long as we can understand one another its not a problem. This is not an english seminar here, its politics.

Homeland security statement: patriotism is now considered terrorism.
I love www.isidewith.com shared it with everyone I know. If anything they realize its not just a red and blue idiot running for reelection.

Spelling? Again?

You know people type on little net books and iphones right? People make TYPO's and choose to not waste their time correcting every little error. I'm here to exchange ideas...not 2 be graded on my typing and spelling skills.

Macon Beacon

Yeah, that needs to be

Yeah, that needs to be changed, not endorsed.

You are graded on your proofreading skills

whether you like it or not, since it is difficult for others to understand what you are talking about if your punctuation and spelling are bad.

People partially judge

People partially judge intelligence through writing. We have the best arguments. I think it is a reasonable point to strive for the best transmission of our ideas as possible.

If the Founding Fathers

and the others surrounding them had written as badly and thought as incoherently as most of the folks in our "liberty movement" they would have failed.

I must say, though, that in the our colonial days, American spelling had not been standardized. Webster helped with that, later.
