Beautiful 21 year old (Girl) friend of mine says she is going to join the armed forces?

She thinks she can't find a decent job because she doesn't have a college degree and she cant afford to go to college so she wants to join the service so they will pay for her college.

I told her that was BS, Skeul is for suckers...but she didn't listen. I'm a perfect example...I have a bachelors degree and all I can currently do is work a piss poor part time job. (I was upper middle class most of my life but SHTF happened to me the 1st go around, in 2008)

Anyway...I really think this is a poor decison on her part. At the very LEAST I think she should wait until the REAL SHTF happens in 2013-2014

Give me some points for her to ponder. I'm normally pretty good at helping people see the light but maybe her looks are making me unable to think straight. :)

and for the record...I'm 49 and married and she is 21...I care about her like a daughter, nothing else)

Speaking as a business owner,

I would not even consider hiring a military vet. I'm interested in dealing with folks who want to trade honestly and peaceably with others. Those who think murdering people and destroying their property is okay as long as some "government authority" gives the order belong in prison, not my shop. Military service today is a character flaw, demonstrating stupidity or a lack of basic human decency -- usually both. If the country were actually attacked, it would be a different story -- but as it stands, our military doesn't protect us from foreign threats -- it provokes and creates them.

If she's a reader, give her a book:

Absolutely 100% agree.

Absolutely 100% agree.

Send her down to Louisiana.

We've got jobs coming out of our ears. That is, if she wants to really work. If all she wants to do is collect a check and play on her cell phone, she can stay put. We've got enough of that homegrown already.

Women are in HIGH demand in these towns and cities

and can get a job there in just days after arriving.

Pick any town in North Dakota. Pick any service job you want.

Looking for a bigger city? Try Oklahoma City, it unemployment is UNDER 6% and dropping fast! Jobs are all over the place.

Looking for real opportunity? Move to South Carolina near Puget Sound. JOBS, jobs and more jobs.

Be sure to set out on FOOT with your Resume and Standard Pre-Filled Application ALREADY DONE. Give a smile, give a firm handshake, and hand it out with a;

"Hi I was hoping I could help this company. Here is my information. Thank You, I won't forget your help". You will be surprised at how fast EMPLOYED people will decide to help you when you walk away. They will make sure her resume and pre-app gets into the right hands. AND ALWAYS take your phone calls, don't let it go to voice mail.

America Today

In America today, the average high school drop out makes more than the average college grad. College is a scam, and it is a really easy way to ruin your life with debt and not even get anything out of it.

Not saying college is bad for everyone. But 90% or so of college grads would have been better off using that time to learn a useful and marketable skill. That is what I did. I started my first job with no college degree at $15 an hour. I'm not saying that to brag, I'm trying to help. I am not just lucky. I knew I could make this happen and I did. If you do what you love and strive to be good at it, you can get hired. If you just want "a job" you will end up in a crappy one. But you will anyway if you go to college without knowing exactly what you expect to get out of it.

I don't think it is quite

I don't think it is quite black and white like this. If I didn't have my college degree, I wouldn't have a job and the networks I made from school getting the degree.

I agree.Of course it isn't black and white

I agree.

Of course it isn't black and white. Some professional domains have a big probability to require someone to graduate from college with significant credits. Medicine and law and many engineering types are obvious examples, I suppose.

It's just for others college is neither sufficient or even necessary. Gov't driven education systems are a big lie to society in that respect. I can speak at least for the deception I saw at play in my country of origin.

But knowing what one wants in the end, and what one is willing to sacrifice for it, in time, money, or energy, is probably the most important and critical thing to give oneself at least a little chance of fulfillment eventually.

Hence the importance of faith in one's desired endeavors.

Don't know if we can make generalizations but I back you up 100%

I don't know if we can make generalizations but I back you up at 100% with my own experience :

1. at 12 year old, early 80s, I had a dream : to program computers

2. at 13 year old I got a programmable calculator for Christmas

3. 5 years later I did my best to at least enter a 3 year cursus in Maths/Engineering in college

4. in 1993 I dropped out and didn't graduate from college, but I had skills in software I had learned by myself and I got my first job in '95 out of a demonstration of my sheer ability; I nailed my first employer's tests against the other candidates who, for most of them, HAD graduated from college

5. today, I have to allow the IRS alone take $11000/year away from me while I sustain by my work alone : my two sons, my american wife, and her three other kids one of whom is my 21 year old step daughter ... struggling to get something out of college here precisely. I have worked non stop over the last 17 years

6. I've always paid rent, I never owned any home and my savings is still close to zero

7. I'm very happy to be free in my head and heart

I don't know if this is still valid as "a lesson" for others. I suspect it is.

That's what I tell two of the kids who are old enough today, anyway : just really believe in your dreams and fight to get there, with all of your energy, sweat, and tears. Really commit to YOUR dreams.

I served 23 years in the military

and retired a few years ago. I have 4 daughters and would never encourage any of them to join the U.S. armed forces at this point in time. While the military has many great people serving and sacrificing, the U.S. empire is in too many places now, and threatens to be in too many more.

I would strongly encourage your friend to look elsewhere.

Magna est veritas, et prevalebit. Truth is most powerful, and will ultimately prevail.

this is a letter i sent to my cousin on my political positions

Well, before I give my opinion I think you should know why I have the opinions I have.

From age 18 to 26 I thought I was the best American ever. I thought my country could never do any wrong, I believed Weapons of Mass Destruction were in Iraq and I thought Al Qaeda was going to take over the world and kill everyone if America didn’t do something about it. Little did I know I was War Hawk. I blame this apathy on my 11th grade history teacher and Fox News; gosh I was dumb back then. I was under the impression America could fix everyone’s problems.

Back in February and March of 2011 I saw the buildup of forces in Spain. I knew we were going to start bombing Libya well before the media told us we were. When the sorties started, I couldn’t figure out why I was helping the UN, NATO, and the United States bomb a country that “had the possibility of its leader potentially killing his own people.” It didn’t seem right to me, my gut was uneasy. In a meeting I had with the General in Spain I asked him to explain to us why we were attacking Libya, he said something along the line of “cause NATO and the PRESIDENT said so.” I asked him to elaborate…..he couldn’t do it because he didn’t know. A few days later I overheard a fighter Pilot say “Damn I hope I get to bomb something today, I don’t care what it is, I don’t care who I kill, I just hope I get to bomb something!” That’s when I started reading….I read history, economics, political books anything I could get my hands on pertaining to my situation. Over the course of a couple months I bought more books from Amazon and Itunes than I have in my entire life.

I learned a number of things over the next few months. Just a few things are:

One, I did not join the military to help kill innocent people.
Two, when I joined the military I swore to give my life for a Piece of Paper that I hadn’t read in full until I was in the Military for nearly eight years. (I first read the US Constitution in April of 2011 I think).
Three, much of what the Government was doing in Foreign Policy was wrong in my opinion.

Four, I learned what the Federal Reserve is.

I was angry. I started thinking about the things I have done since I joined in 2003, in Korea, Iraq, Qatar and even the things I have done while state side. I realized the military promotes hate, fear, war and death. While continuing my research I came across what is taught in my Air Force Professional Development Guide. It says, essentially at the basis of every military decision is a political objective.

All of my research had changed my views on life drastically, my views on what was right and what was wrong changed drastically and in short I changed. I was very very close to getting out of the military. A few months went by and one of my troops sent an e mail and said “I just wanted to let you know how influential you where on me, you opened my eyes to politics and my rights as an American and for that I’m forever grateful and hopefully I can pass it on, stay who you are no matter what rank you get to and don’t forget where you came from.” Because of that e-mail I realized I am in the unique position to influence a very influential group of people, the military. Since then I have been pushing the limits of what my rank can handle, luckily I have been promoted and I always have the Law, the Constitution and morals on my side to back me up. I will no longer promote unconstitutional or unlawful dealings; I will no longer sacrifice my morals and participate in tyrannical acts.

Anyway back to Obama. I am not an Obama Basher like a lot of people are. He was handed crap when he came into office, but he could of done more since he has been in office in my opinion. Unfortunately he has not followed through on his campaign promises. His actions as president have shown his views have changed drastically or I completely misunderstood his platform.

One of the most important issues to me is Foreign Policy, Yes he has ended the War in Iraq but the State Department has kept some 5000 mercenaries there. And if wasn't for Iraq saying NO he would have kept troops in Iraq. In addition he has committed additional acts of war in all of these countries; Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan, Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of the Congo. He has also killed American citizens with drone strikes……simply inexcusable. One more thing, he stopped working on closing down Guantanamo. But, Romney’s views are essentially the same only with a little more Iran and Syria saber rattling.

Fiscal issues are also a big deal but realistically the President does not have much say compared to the congress. Both Obama and Romney have crappy budget plans in my opinion. They need to start cutting now and just stop spending. In fact just today I heard our squadron of 300+ people have to spend over $51,000 by October 1st or we will lose it and not have it in our budget next year. I said don't spend it....everyone looked at me like i was crazy. The amount of waste I see on a daily basis is so sad. The federal deficit may not affect us very much now, but I fear my nieces and nephew and possibly my future kids will have to deal with it.

Civil Liberties have also become important to me. Both Romney and Obama support the Patriot Act, the 2012 NDAA, the TSA as well as the NSA taking away our internet freedom.

When it comes to Social Issues Obama is 100% pro choice and Romney WAS pro choice just a few years ago, but honestly this is kind of a non issue to me because the republicans didn’t do anything about abortion when they had the power to do something back when Bush was in office. Abortion in my view is more of a people problem than a government problem. Further, if the federal government viewed it as murder it would be a state issue and not a federal issue. The 10th amendment tells us what do on this issue.

Both Obama and Romney have supported gun bans in the past. This is kind of scary; the government should not mess with a person inherent right to self defense.

Well those are my opinions.

just my perspective

in a roundabout way it may help you persuade her

It will be hard

I'll tell you why. You can convert the minds of people considering going over because they want to "defend our country," but you can't do much for those who are going there for self-serving reasons. The reason why is because if they're not going for the cause of war then they'res really no way to deflect their case.

I'd mention a couple things, however.

1. Chance of getting killed
2. Once you signup, there's no backing out till you lose a limb or your time is up
3. Most veterans have a harder time finding jobs than civilians even after extensive training from the military
4. Psychological damage - if she's not used to getting screamed at, cussed at, and pushed beyond mental and physical capacity then this probably isn't the right route for her.

North Dakota

Encourage the young woman to go north. There are jobs that can't be filled by the thousands paying 100K+ per year. Put a hitch on her car, and offer to help hook her up with a smallcamper. It won't be luxurious, but in 1-2 years she can save enough cash to pay for college in cash. Then encourage her to get a technical education, technical skills are never out of style. People who know hoe to get things done will always be valuable. Anyway, if I was 10 years youngs and without a wife and three kids I'd go to ND, live and work cheap for 10 years, and then retire with a piece of land and a nice nest egg by age 30. Ah hindsight is 20/20.

That's terrible advice

Do NOT go to college to learn technology. Of all the useless degrees, that is by far the absolute biggest waste of time and money. You will learn things that will not even still be true by the time you graduate. Absolutely DO NOT go to school for any kind of tech job! Learn it on your own! If you actually put time and effort into learning a technical skill you will become much more efficient much faster on your own (or with privatized training courses) than college.

I just turned down a $40/hr job offer. I promise you, in this industry they could care less about degrees, if the degree is over a year old it is actually a bad thing in the eyes of employers.

F*ing recruiters are worse

F*ing recruiters are worse then used car salesman. Most of what they tell people are lies especially young impressionable people. I'd do an intervention if I had to.

Find some vet who was sold all the lies and found out they were lied to after they went in and have them talk to her. They are hard to find because once you get in they are all brain washed and when they get out few fully over come the rah rah military service equal freedom justice and the American way BS.

You can also have her read General Smedley Butlers "War is Racket" google it. Good luck and don;t give up on her recruit some of her friends and family to dissuade her too if you can.

Job corp.

I have referred my daughter and nephew to this program. I think it to be a better alternative than the military.

Hmm, it's definitely safer

But on CSpan Tom Woods just ripped it to shreds for completely failing at its mission.

Be sure to tell her

A Pentagon study revealed one in three women in the military suffered sexual harassment or rape.

And those are just the reported cases.

Conscience does not exist if not exercised

"No matter how cynical you get, it's impossible to keep up!
---Lily Tomlin

It's not sexual harrassment, it's sexual Assault

I was all ready to make a point about how statistics are worded to make them sound more alarming (ie "sexual harrassment or rape" usually just means "sexual harrassment plus a microscopic amount of rape"), but in this case it's actually worse than I thought.

Good call

It's an important distinction.

Conscience does not exist if not exercised

"No matter how cynical you get, it's impossible to keep up!
---Lily Tomlin

Good luck. Maybe this will help:

"War On Our World" (Documentary).

We all have our freedoms to do whatever we want to do in life no matter how others may view it. Do your best to inspire her to seek another alternative. The growing rate of rape in the military should be alarming enough.

Personally, I'd rather be homeless than have to be trained to kill human beings to have the military pay for my own indoctrination.

"We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience"—Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

Your link to "War On Our World" doesn't work.

Here's one that does.

When I was younger and

When I was younger and dumber, I thought the military would be fun and exciting. I really considered joining ROTC when I was 18-20. I owe the fact that I didn't to my parents. My dad was drafted into Vietnam and made it clear that if I joined the army he would be extremely saddened and always fearful for me. He told me that I would be wasting my abilities - which I would have been.
Running around in the woods playing paintball would be fun. So would paratrooping.
I can do those just fine as a civilian and not have to go to war.
WAR is NOT fun.

make a deal

“Military men are just dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy.” - Henry Kissinger
Maybe he doesn't feel the same about women. lol Show her that and then make a deal with her that this so called unrest in Egypt over a movie trailer will escalate by election time into an attack on Iran by Israel which we will then become involved in. If it's true she has to promise not to enlist. Either way, if she does enlist, I can promise she'll get an education alright...just not the kind she has in mind. (In saying all this, I support our troops completely. It's the politicians here and in other nations who we allow to command them that I despise.)

Women in the military

Women in the military generally become super promiscuous, and unfortunately many of them get raped. If that's what she's looking for, fine. I hope she finds happiness.
However, joining the military because you can't find a decent job is utterly stupid. Do you know how much money enlisted grunts earn? They probably earn about the same as McDonalds workers, only they get their dorm style housing provided. Then, they need to wonder if/when they will get shot, or lose a body part, or die.

She's probably lying to you though. She sees the army as freedom - not necessarily as a job source. Right now she sees herself stuck in a low wage cycle. However, the army is not freedom. It's being constantly told what to do, how to do it, where to do it, etc.

“If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.”

Wanna help her?

Pay a guy to assault her, degrade her and kill her soul. Have his friends shoot at her randomly and when she is the most comfortable and sane, then give her drugs so that she can appear to be coping with her broken mind and body, just enough to be presentable to society, whether they can see her physical scars, or mental scars or not...

I'm sorry, but that is what is waiting for her. I'd rather be on unemployment and food stamps than have to live my life as a zombie and no soul or respect, sympathy, or empathy for others... one the bright side though, maybe they would give her disability, just saying...

If you care about her at all, do whatever you can to get her to not go through with it. My father told me if I'd ever signed up, he'd kill me, only when I saw people coming back from Iraq in my town, did I understand why he was so extreme...

Tell her she will get

Tell her she will get gang-raped by a bunch of testosterone meat-head alpha males... but with girls these days that may be exactly what she is thinking.
