How to Print Your Own Gun
...If you've heard all the buzz about the latest 3D printing technology, you've probably seen the pictures of simple toys, shoes, jewelry and instrument parts created from one of these new printers. But some savvy tech experts believe a dark side of 3D printing is unfolding just as quickly...

Last month, Engineer Michael Guslick said he had successfully printed and fired the world's first homemade 3D-impressed gun. He made this claim on the AR15.com online forum. The gun was the lower receiver of an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and Guslick indicated that he had fired the gun over 200 times.

Guslick continued to say that assembling the rifle “wasn't that difficult,” and he was able to do so after purchasing a 3D printer for $1,000. After all was said and done, the project took him approximately 30 hours max...

ill believe it when I see the file

Like "free energy" claims. Just release the blueprints and prove you actually care about freedom.

I'm involved in CNC

I'm involved in CNC technology which is where 3D printing evolved from...
So I can tell you all that they can take our guns, but we have the know how to make them! We will not be oppressed!

If they're planning to ban guns they're gonna have to deal with

...gun printing as well...

Dear wife, aka my Beloved Geek Woman, pointed this out to me

Dear wife, aka my Beloved Geek Woman, pointed this out to me the other day.

That's really cool.

I immediately asked her to cross her fingers strong for us so that the corrupt state regulators, along with Mr. Michael D.o_u.g_l.a_s *** and other 2nd Amendment-challenged useful idiots, notice it ...

I have a Makerbot Cupcake

I have a Makerbot Cupcake Batch 15 -- And mine will never print good enough to print a working gun :-(

I did print this pretty awesome Mars rover though...

3D printers are extremely cool and new the models are printing in microns as opposed to millimeters.

And to who ever mentioned printing food... here ya go:

I would love to see the .stl

I would love to see the .stl file that is used to print something. Thingiverse does not show any working guns on their site. If anyone has the link to download a working .stl, please provide it.

Printcrime

I just came across a short story by Cory Doctorow, author of Little Brother (great libertarian novel), on the implications of 3D printing. Enjoy.

this is the closest thing to Star Treks Food Replicator

while it does not actually print food, it may be able to print parts to build a small oven?

Very valuable on that deserted island, or in deep space travels.

(BTW-- kinkos doesn't have em yet)

Grad Student in Architecture

3d Printers are the new rave! Print architectural components to assemble a model, or even larger components to build a structure.

You can use the 3d printer to create more 3d printer parts and duplicate itself near entirely save from necessary mechanical equipment.

and, you can make cool 'toys' as mentioned above.

They that give up liberty for security deserve neither.

Wow, another truly outside the box post.

You've got yourself a pretty wild imagination there, sir. My mind is still spinning about your idea about adding extra zero onto our dollars to fix the economy. It would kill the credit market. Pretty cool stuff.

I hope it's true...

That way anytime I go traveling around the world, I can just stop at a Kinkos and print me a gun and not have to worry about bringing one on the plane.

If Kinkos won't do it then maybe I'll just bring a printer with me whenever I go traveling so I can get what I need in my hotel room : )

No need.....

You down load the printer off the internet when you get to the hotel.

What kinda downloads are you

What kinda downloads are you talking about? ha, ha.

Should people buy 3D printers to print more 3D printers to print

more 3D printers to print more guns?

AWESOME!

"3-D printing"...

...is still in its infancy. I see it as a primitive step on the way toward the real goal, which is molecular assemblers / nano-fabrication.

This isn't anything. It's

This isn't anything. It's always been possible to make your own machine shop gun or zip gun. It's never been that hard, other than the imagination needed that you can in fact do it.

It has traditionally required

It has traditionally required more knowledge than simply downloading a print file.

Says who?

Says who?

Edit: Perhaps you mean less work (an assumption), not knowledge. Knowledge is not the same thing as work. Every town blacksmith could make potentially make a gun barrel at one time. Things are easier today with modern machine shop tools.

Guns are not high tech items. They were originally crafted.

Best part is the next time he prints one,

he can just increase the copies.

Ha Ha ha I love it! That's

Ha Ha ha I love it! That's awesome! Watch now they will try to pass some BS about 3d printers or if you print a gun with one you must fill out a yellow sheet on it. However there is a supreme court case about a Guy who made his own AK or something and they said he had to fill out paper work and the court sided with him that he did not have to because it was not in commerce...

Can't wait to print out my own Tommy gun LOL!
