Guardian: Gary Johnson: 'These people are let down by the two-party system'

Amid all the flip-flopping and dissembling of the 2012 election, it comes as a bit of a shock to hear one of the presidential candidates say that his interest in politics stemmed from the first time he smoked dope. But then there is much about Gary Johnson, the Libertarian party's nominee for the White House, that is strikingly out of the mould.

"I think marijuana played a role in my libertarianism, because when in 1970 I smoked it for the first time I realized that everything the government said about it was a lie," he said. "You know, you smoke marijuana, you're going to go crazy, you'll want to commit crime, you are going to go to the depths and never return … None of that was true."

From those teenaged dope-smoking beginnings, Johnson, now 59, went on to become a successful businessman and a Republican governor of New Mexico, and is now seeking to carry the libertarian flame lit by Ron Paul during the primary election season into November's presidential race.

What the Libertarian Party stands for is an America that does not kill its own citizens and their 16 year old children without any form of due process.

The Libertarian Party stands for not invading nations and killing civilians when no threat to us exists.

The Libertarian Party stands for minding our own business in international affairs, and ending the ridiculous belief in American Exceptionalism that has turned our citizens into imperialistic, bloodthirsty morons.

The Libertarian Party is not bought and paid for by the Israel Lobby.

The Libertarian Party stands for ending the Patriot Act, the TSA, Warrantless Wiretaps, FISA courts, the NDAA, Gitmo and every other vehicle that the Feds have used post 9-11 to eviscerate what was left of the 4th Amendment.

The Libertarian Party rejects the concept of a Unitary Executive.

The Libertarian Party stands for ending the criminal War on Drugs, which has imprisoned millions of Americans for non-violent, victimless crimes.

All these things the Libertarian Party stands for are issues that progressives once attached themselves too. However, Democrats have continually supported Obama's expansion of Bush-era policies without so much as a peep. When you actually analyze much of President Obama's policy in the fields of civil liberties and foreign policy, you see a record closer to Bill Kristol and Dick Cheney than anything that could be remotely deemed progressive. So continue to fool yourself into thinking Romney and Obama are any different, because they aren't.

He would definitely be the lesser of the existing bunch.

“I maintain that because of our military interventions we have hundreds of millions of enemies to this country that, but for our military interventions, would not exist,” Johnson told a crowd of college students at the University of New Hampshire on Wednesday.

“Let’s get out of these embassies now. Let’s stop making ourselves a target,” Johnson said.

During his speech Johnson, who is at the beginning of a nationwide tour of college campuses, said that politicians use terms like “our vital American interests” as cover for violent military actions that cause more harm than good for the United States.

“Tens of thousands of innocent civilians that die in the countries that we militarily intervene, our men and servicewomen coming back in body bags, our men and servicewomen coming back with their limbs blown off, all in the name of what?” he said.
