Lindsey Graham Slams Rand Paul on Foreign Aid Cut Proposal

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Thursday criticized a fellow Republican, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, for proposing to end aid to Libya, Egypt and Pakistan, suggesting the cuts could damage U.S. national security.

"Rand Paul is one nice fellow, but I bet you he's never talked with CIA Director General Petraeus about what would happen if we cut our aid off to Pakistan," said Graham at a Politico event at the Newseum. "It's 90 percent popular, but I can show you things in history that were 100 percent popular that were really bad ideas."

Paul has threatened to block a six-month government funding bill because he wants to cut off U.S. aid to Pakistan unless the country stops "openly thwarting our objectives in the region" and releases a Pakistani doctor who helped in the search for Osama bin Laden. He urged aid to be cut to Egypt and Libya, unless those countries show "full cooperation" in bringing those to justice who stormed U.S. diplomatic facilities last week. The attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three colleagues.

Paul told fellow senators in a letter on Tuesday that if a full cutoff in aid could not be passed, "significant cuts that are less than the full amount of foreign aid could be considered, coupled with redirecting a portion of the money into the improvement of security at our diplomatic facilities. If these countries cannot secure American lives and property, our increased cost of doing so must come out of the money set aside for aid."

In the State-Foreign Operations budget for the 2013 fiscal year, the Obama administration requested $2.2 billion in foreign aid to Pakistan and $1.56 billion for Egypt, according to a Congressional Research Service report obtained by the Federation of American Scientists.

Graham told those gathered at the Newseum on Thursday that the U.S. should continue to engage with the Mideast to try to shape the region as it goes through political turmoil.

Ransom

Lindsey admits that the suez canal and the nukes in pakistan are being held hostage, and we must pay the ransom or something bad will happen.

These countries have no incentive to oust the terrorists, because it would kill the golden goose.

Spineless republicans that say they won't negotiate with terrorists, but will cave to this extortion must go.

Please explain

If Paul says he wants to cut funding UNLESS these countries do x, y, and z, isn't that precisely bribing them with the money? isn't that the same bad thing we are doing?

The libertarian position would be just to end the funding, period. No conditions. No expectations. No ultimatums. Just end. That's it. Done.

There's no proper argument for giving the money on conditions. Giving them our money is plainly immoral by itself.

Transition

Yes, we Libertarians can be all or nothing with positions because we have a majority of Libertarian Senators, Congressmen, and even Libertarian president.

oh, wait. Actually we don't.

As much as you would like to, you cannot flip the switch that easily. You need transition to take the parts everyone agrees on, and work towards the ultimate goal as a process.

Example: Did Dr Paul say he would end the fed on the first day of his presidency? No, he would transition with competing currencies so that more people would see the benefit from these policies and we could transition to a day where we end the fed.

I like Rand's position. If he can 180 the battleship, thats great! But if he cannot, then in a pragmatic way he is starting to turn the ship. Currently these countries throw up their hands, say they can do little about the violence, and then take our money.

If after all of the money we have given them they are still inept, or apathetic, then we may have to up our efforts. I don't like it, and I would rather be out of there, but if it HAS to happen it should come out of the money we would have given them.

Giving them money is immoral, and while I don't think Rand can stop it today, I like his reasoning for those condition. Its not the foreign policy I would like but it nudges it in the right direction.

.

Rand wants to end all foreign aid. He's said that repeatedly and it was also part of the first bill he introduced as a Senator.

That went nowhere and got zero attention.

This bill does have conditions and its not exactly what we want but just look at the fight he's having on ending foreign aid with conditions. If we don't even have the support to get this passed, how will we ever convince them to end all foreign aid?

Also, it is highly unlikely that those countries will do what we say so in effect, the aid will stop to those countries. Once the aid stops, it will take legislation from Senators to reintroduce aid and that will be even more unpopular than ending aid.

This also gets Senators on the record. There's zero chance Rand could have gotten a vote on his bill to end all foreign aid. Going forward with a bill like this allows Rand to get Senators on the record, which will be very valuable for future liberty candidates who aspire to be Senators.

Who should be criticized for seditious treason?

For passing laws that purport to operate as if the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Eight amendment did not exist.

Who has given aid to the enemies of the United States by passing unconstitutional laws on numerous occasions.

MARBURY v. MADISON, 5 U.S. 137 (1803)

[A]ct[s] deemed by the court not warranted by law, but violative of a vested legal right.

[What is] the government of the United States,... if the laws furnish no remedy for the violation of a vested legal right.

2. If he has a right, and that right has been violated, do the laws of his country afford him a remedy? The very essence of civil liberty certainly consists in the right of every individual to claim the protection of the laws,.... One of the first duties of government is to afford that protection."

"Thus, the constitution of the United States confirms and strengthens the principle,... that a law repugnant to the constitution is void, and that courts, as well as other departments, are bound by that instrument.

Marbury vs Madison ruled that the Constitution has precedence and that all courts and departments were duty bound by oath to uphold the Constitution.

18 USC § 2382 - Misprision of treason
"Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States and having knowledge of the commission of any treason against them, conceals and does not, as soon as may be, disclose and make known the same to the President or to some judge of the United States, or to the governor or to some judge or justice of a particular State, is guilty of misprision of treason."

"Don't be trampling my rights. I take a real dim view of that!" ~Carl Miller

If a right is violated then they have to listen since the Constitution is the law of the land and government must provide remedy or face charges of Treason.

Even the Supreme Court can commit Treason by Sedition by undermining the Law of the land. If a right has been violated the Court is bound to uphold it or make a judgement that is repugnant to the Constitution.

I consent to a government by Constitution strictly prevented from violating natural or stated rights of men.

Free Bradley Manning or bring charges. His rights have been violated under the Fifth, Sixth and Eight Amendments. There is no War or public danger.

There is plenty of hysteria being broadcast. Allowing our rights to be trampled is not a public good,

"We ... establish Justice, promote the general Welfare," when we stand up for each others rights. It is our common defense.

Free includes debt-free!

Paul doesn't go far enough, end all foreign aid everywhere

including Israel and should propose bringing all troop home immediately. The sooner we stop exposing our troops to blowback, the sooner the region will find a peaceful solution to its problems, problems that are not ours to bear.

It only takes one to KEEP AMERICANS FREE. Know your duties & rights as a juror. Stop the unconstitutional conviction of innocents in federal custody. The Fully Informed Jury CALL 1-800-TEL-JURY www.fija.org IMMEDIATELY if not sooner. It's that important.

LOL bet he never asked CIA

You mean the same people that said Iraq had huge stockpiles of WMD's and mobile labs making more. The same people that said that the war would be done with Iraq in 6 months and the Iraqi's would love us as their liberators.

Pakistan is notoriously corrupt

Which explains why Graham is so concerned that they should continued to be paid.

Interesting how the position

Interesting the position Rand took.

If he's successful in blocking the foreign aid, that's less foreign aid distributed around the world.

But if it doesn't pass, it looks like people are opposing his motives of securing embassies and forcing Pakistani cooperation.

Good tactic that is often used in legislation names (ACTA, SOPA, PIPA, VAWA, etc.).

I pledge

I pledge to work tirelessly to see that this man is defeated come 2014. And I don't even live in SC. I just hate this jerk.

I bet Graham has never

I bet Graham has never consulted anyone on the matter who doesn't stand to directly benefit from an overactive foreign policy. A conflict of interest I would say.

Graham is a travesty wrapped

Graham is a travesty wrapped in a farcical opera. So concerned he is about the betterment of peoples in other countries, that his importuning for a continuous supply of repression seems ludicrously odd. But to say this requires one to forget who Mr. Graham is: a slimy, venal neo-con and lickspittle of the munitions industry.

I think

You are too kind in your description of Mr. Graham :)

All Lindsey Graham has to do is look

in the mirror to see something in history that is 100% unpopular.

It's impossible to describe in words how much I HATE...

...the war-mongering Neo-Con Lindsey Graham.

This bastard is responsible for more American servicemen deaths in the last decade than any other single figure (except John McCain and Joe LIEberman).

While Graham sits in the comfort and safety of his Senate office he sends countless Americans off to die on foreign soil in foreign wars which have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DEFENSE OF AMERICA.

Remember, Graham comes from one of the most Militery-Industrial states in the union. They make a lot of bombs down there.

So to keep his constituants happy, and to keep getting elected, he keeps the wars coming and the defense contractors busy.

Lindsey Graham is as IMMORAL a person as exists and it is people like him and McCain that have driven me from the republican party.

I can NOT vote for ANYONE who I know these bastards are voting for.

One more thing...It was South Carolina who BOOED Dr. Paul in the debates when he suggested that maybe we should use the Golden Rule a little more in our foreign policy.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

Yeah, I live in SC

And this a$$hole is one of the worst! I HATE this man so much! I know your not supposed to hate, but I wish he would drop the hell dead! The world would be so much better off. I have sent him so many letters only to keep getting the same damn canned response back over and over, its PATHETIC!!!! He does not give a damn about what you think. He does not care to represent us. I know first hand he does NOT serve the people. I hope he dies of nuclear radiation poisoning. He wants SOOOOO bad to have SC the state with all the nuclear BS(plants and waste dump). Makes no sense. This man is of Satan. He is in love with nuclear energy. This bastard is so damn ignorant or psychopathic its unbelievable. Cant understand why these idiots here in this state vote this joker. I put Graham in the same rankings of Bush and Obama. F'n scumbag traitors that should be tortured to DEATH!!! A dose of their own medicine.

Hey pawnstorm, I understand how you feel

I too am repulsed at the open disdain that senator has shown for the Constitution.

But is it possible for us to "hate" the actions of the person and not the person themselves? I don't know. It's just that the Bible tells us if we "hate" then we are murderers ourselves -which is the very thing we are trying to put an end to right?

The Bible has a constant theme of blessings for the righteous vs. curses upon the wicked.

God is a just judge, And God is angry with the wicked every day. Psalm 7:11-12

The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. Proverbs 16:4

God is well able to take care of every, single wrong when the day of accounting does come. Let us be busy about what really matters in life as that's all that we can at least partly control.

I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war. Ps 120:7
--
Better to be divided by truth than united in error.
--
The local church(not a building -a people) is the missing link. The time to build is now.

Music to my ears...

"God is well able to take care of every, single wrong when the day of accounting does come."

Your right we should not hate, but how can you NOT help but feel this way when you know this person is plain evil? God HATES evil. So why cant I?

I never said not to hate. You can and should hate evil...

We just need to be careful to separate our hatred for evil deeds from hating the evildoer. Think of them the way they are, as slaves to the devil. He has them on his puppet strings and one day, unless they repent, they will live with him forever in hell.

People have been brainwashed for decades that the worst thing anyone can do is to "hate." The problem is the folks espousing this doctrine are usually the biggest haters. Hate, when directed at the correct things, is healthy. Hate evil, not evil people who Jesus shed blood for if they will but repent.

Last, keep in mind, that not one of us is without sin and that ALL sin demands blood to be remitted... Focus on getting free and clean from your own sin and go forward!

I can't help it. The Bible also says...

"Ye shall know the heart of a man by his actions."

Graham is an Arab-hater.

That's fine - he can hate all he wants. But the problem is, he has the power of his position in the Senate to propagate wars and send innocent people off to kill innocent people - IN OUR NAMES.

The blood of every person our military kills over there is on OUR HANDS because OUR MONEY funded it.

I can't help but hate anyone who involves ME in such action.

"We have allowed our nation to be over-taxed, over-regulated, and overrun by bureaucrats. The founders would be ashamed of us for what we are putting up with."
-Ron Paul

You are right to call him out!

I agree with naming names and calling people out for their evil deeds. I'm just hoping you won't get yourself soiled and stained with the hate of a "person" -a living soul who is in grave danger every day that they don't repent. Hate the deeds, not the evildoer who is in the dreadful position of falling into the hands of a living God.

I 100% agree with you

I feel the EXACT same way of this man. He should be the first on Obama's kill list. He is a TRUE terrorist. He is a terrorist creator. He does a great job creating terrorist. I cant even stand listening to him talk.

Isn't this the ass clown that

Isn't this the ass clown that wants you to shut up. We should send lindsey Graham to libya parachute him in with that $4 billion.... see how long before they tell him to shut up

almost 4 billion just

to these two countries? and the more we meddle the more they hate. that's something grahamnesty will never understand, he's been fed too much fear and not enough spinach!

keep fighting this weasel Senator Paul!

I am!
