My hours at work cut thanks to Obamacare.

Hello DP. Long time reader, first time poster.

I've always read about obamacare, and the arguments for or against it in the mainstream media and online. It was always just an intellectual debate for me to read on and honestly never took it very seriously...till now.

I've worked for Enterprise Rent-a-Car for 3 1/2 years now as a service agent(car washer/gopher). Cleaning cars, changing tires, picking up/dropping off customers, and transporting vehicles between branches, body shops, and dealerships. I've never been written up, and have had positive employee reviews thus far.

I've always been considered part time, but have worked 35 hours/week since I've been here. Pay isn't all that great for the amount of work, but I've been getting by because it's steady work. So after all this, I find out today that starting next week my hours will be cut to 25 a week because the company is reacting to obamacare a year early so that they are compliant with the new regulations already when it starts.

20 hours per check reduction in pay may not seem like a lot to some people, but its the difference between me making my bills every month or not. I guess with my newfound free time, I can go job hunting with the countless other thousands in this city. Sorry for the long read, but had to put it out there.

I closed shop

I shut down the morning after the SCOTUS ruling. Sharing a closed door 2 man operation now. Cut the other 6 loose.

Me too.

Computer Programming Intern. 40 hrs a week and now down to 15 hrs a week.
I left a job that paid decent that was full time to take the internship too. I am pretty upset but I love the free time. Just preparing for the collapse.

I have a decent LinkedIn

I have a decent LinkedIn network (click my handle). I'm contacted everyday by 1 to 2 dozens of recruiters and other head hunters. Some of them I know already regularly checking on me if I'm on the job market or if I can provide them new referrals.

Some almost sound like begging. It's still rather crazy demand in our "blessed" domain (software dev.)

To all liberty lovers who are also current job seekers : feel free to reach out to me (priv. message) any time if you're looking in California, esp. North.

I'd be happy, honored, to help juniors kickstart or rise, for free of course for whoever is job seeking. I won't care about your formal education. The coding passion and skills is all that will matter most. Be prepared. But I hope you already knew that.

Just partisan politics

Companies ran by politcally partisan people do stuff like this all the time. They dont care about you so they use you as a pawn to try to get you to vote one way or the other.

It has been in the news that military contractors are giving the pink slip to many of their employees also right before the elections and telling them it has something to do with politics to to try to get their empployees angry at whoever the company is trying to hurt.

If it was just about the numbers (money) the company would have waited until it was actually going to have an effect on their balance sheet.

Go work for a company that is more into making money than into politics.

Companies maybe

What you say may be correct when it comes to companies. But small business provide 60% of the jobs in this country and for the most part can't afford to put politics over making money. When you have a small 10 employee or less business owner who can hardly afford to insure himself, has to insure 10 other individuals on top of their wages, his decision to close the business isn't done out of political spite.

A major problem is few of the People have time to read horrendous bills such as HR 3962, because we re all in a daily rat race.

I did read HR 3962 and posted about it and the horror you can find in ONE insidious English sentence, but it was TOO LATE !

The most critical problem is the corrupt Congress doesn't read the bills EITHER. It is only political games to serve them.

See my other comment.

and the snopes.com "debunking", btw... is b.s. It refers to another bill that never passed. The CIA or some other agency posts on snopes, too, evidently.

major critical problem

No one reads it. Now imagine the small business owner who has to go to the expense of trying to navigate through that giant snafu of regulations and legalese without error, as to not incur expensive penalties.

Dr. Paul has

an easy answer for reading bills.

He says his staffers have it easy. He tells them all they have to do is show him anywhere the bill is unconstitutional. Most of the time they only have to read the first page.

Yes, I know this quote.

Yes, I know this quote. I watched and heard him when he said that, in one of his campaign speeches.

In the case of HR 3962, the infamy is a bit more buried, beyond just the first couple pages. It all surrounds the applicability criteria of class II devices and WHO defines life sustaining ones.

Once again Congress betrayed their oath of the People representation, ALL of them, those who didn't oppose the bill for its true threats, when it was the time to do it.

Obama voter reasoning =

Repeating political brochures propaganda isn't reasoning.

It's surrendering on free thinking, instead.

Welfare and redistribution schemes thru bureaucrats and crooks have been known to fail for almost a century already. OCTOBER 1917.

People have NO LONGER any excuse.

They can ignore history all they want :

what they CANNOT DO is complain thereafter, period.

Re: ObamaCare, to anyone who thinks that it is at worst wasteful and unrealistic, and at best useless and harmless, I'd suggest to "read again" carefully this thread and comments for instance :

Look at the bright side

This is probably not what you want to hear right now, but, maybe there will be some positive unintended consequence. Its possible you may find more/higher paying work elsewhere. Here's an idea, post on craigslist or angie'slist whatever skills you have. Maybe even start your own business where you visit people's homes/work and wash/perform maintenance on their vehicles. You could even go door to door (remember to pick the right neighborhoods) offering your services, with a background story of what exactly happened to you. Remember there are still many people on the government dole who have cash, and are willing to drop $20, $40, or even $100's of dollars for a car wash/detailing. Best of luck, I'm sure you will be fine, you are one of us!

My prediction

My prediction is that Obamacare will really drive unemployment in the coming years. We'll hear all of this talk about job creation and we'll hear nothing about how employers will have to cut back hiring, automate more, offshore more, and contort their labor force (like reducing hours) to deal with the healthcare costs.

It's going to be big and everyone will be poorer.

PERSONAL ADVICE: I would go work independently with your now added free time. Do cash jobs - mow lawns, rake leaves, shovel snow, clean out garages. Detail cars! You'll make more money.

Or become a knowledge worker of some sort. A smart DPer probably can do better than being a car gopher for 3.5 years.

Currently consuming: Morehouse's "Better off free", FDR; Wii U; NEP Football

I am sorry...that really, really stinks.

What new regulations would require this?

The law cannot make a wicked person virtuous…God’s grace alone can accomplish such a thing.

Oh, c'mon, Obamacare is great!

Like Nancy Pelosi said, because of ObamaCare you can now pursue your dreams! No more worries.

I've had people tell me on the DP that Obamacare

really isn't all that big of a deal. That we should concentrate on more important things such as the drug war, our wars in the Middle East, the Patriot Act, the NDAA, etc.

The problem with that thinking is that all of those things only affect a small percentage of the population. They're all bad and I am as much against them as anyone here. But, the drug war doesn't affect you if you don't do drugs, the wars in the Middle East don't affect you if you aren't over there or have a family member or close friend who is and even then, your family member or friend may not suffer at all from it. The Patriot Act probably hasn't affected even half of one percent of our total population, and so far I don't think the NDAA has affected a single person yet.

Obamacare affects all of us because we all have to work and breathe in this country.
