Secret recordings made by British intelligence during the Second World War have revealed for the first time the horrific atrocities carried out by everyday German soldiers.

For years the blame for horrific war crimes, rape and genocide were laid at the hands of the SS and Hitler's right hand men but a new book details how widespread the barbarity went.

Transcripts taken from hidden microphones on prisoners of war have been collated for the disturbing book Soldaten: On Fighting, Killing and Dying: The Secret Second World War Tapes of German POWs.

It's not pretty. It's all the same. With the often estimated one million dead Iraqis do we have to wonder if some US armed forces revel in the same atrocities?

With the tens of millions of dead Russians civilians in WWII, do we have to wonder about some soldiers enjoying it? And than, once Berlin went down, what did the Russians do likewise to the German civilians? Why gang bang the women and children in front of their families, of course. Among other atrocities. Payback is a bitch. The job of the military commander is to dehumanize the 'enemy'. War is atrocious.

Sorry about the gory lecture. I just wished Americans understood war better. Perhaps for selfish reasons. Payback is a bitch.

More Germans died in the Dresden firebombing ALONE than Jews died at Auschwitz, yet we never hear about that. I wonder why.
